Dark Star Thresh is a Completely Differnet Person
I have many complaints with Dark Star Thresh, the fact his taunt still takes hours to do, how he looks like a cheesy villain from the 80's, including a quote from the 80s arcade game Sinstar, and the fact that the model and abilities has no real direction in portraying a consistent fantasy. I could make entire posts about these problems by themselves, but I'm going to talk about the reason I refuse to use Dark Star Thresh, how he is completely disconnected from Thresh himself.
Dark Star Thresh, is a devourer of stars because his stomach makes the grumblies, Thresh is a torturer because his thirst for sadism was so strong that after the Ruination, he became a spirit that delighted in the chance to freely torture whomever he pleased. What I mean by this, over and over again Dark Star Thresh talks about a hunger, a hunger for stars. It honestly reminds a lot of Tahm Kench, melodramatics and all. Maybe he was written by the same high school dropout that eats the garbage he makes at his fast food restaurant. Don't get me wrong, some of the lines do imply a joy for what he does, but the overwhelming majority of his lines seem like an office worker, bored and tired of his job, hoping to see the end of all life before the new episode of his favorite sitcom comes on.
You can see it most prominently when he dies, "The embrace of nothingness..." "Oh, thank you..." "Finally..." These are the words of a bitter old man, not a torturer that relished in the fact he could live forever doing what he delighted in most without consequence. As much I would like to, I won't talk about every line that creates a direct conflict with the nature of Thresh, there are too many with too much to say. You're 100% free to look through the wiki yourself and see the sheer amount of "Hunger is the only reason I do this," or "I'm going to make everything into nothing so I can die,"
I've found the most frustrating part of all this, is that I'm not sure WHY this direction was taken to Dark Star Thresh. He's very clearly based on Lovecraft influences, seeing how he does embody the idea of Lovecraft's main purpose, being quoted as "Now all my tales are based on the fundamental premise that common human laws and interests and emotions have no validity or significance in the vast cosmos-at-large," Expect, Dark Star Thresh misses the goal of the premise of Lovecraft by constantly mentioning a prime and primal human emotion, hunger. Hunger is both an emotion, and an interest, and by making it a prime of motive of Dark Star Thresh, it completely misses the point of Lovecraft horror.
Lovecraft horror, at least in my eyes, is so effective because it makes the horrors of the story completely alien to humans, they are not motivated by anything, they are beings of Cosmo so advanced, we can not comprehend their existence or their motive. Yet these abominations could easily destroy the fabric of society and even reality as we know it. They represent the fear the complete unknown, as much bushes do when Garen is on the enemy team. But Dark Star Thresh does not represent the fear complete unknown, we know exactly what motivates him to destroy society and realities. Because the man is hungry. Hunger is a feeling we have all experienced before, and is something that is a part of daily life. Suddenly the mysterious cosmic force of reality turns into a cranky five year old, mad that he skipped dinner because he filled up on snacks.
If you ask me why this attempt at Lovecraft horror went wrong, I would say because Thresh as a character, was and even looks like a human. Lovecraft's monsters all share a common theme of distinctly inhuman. Some approach uncanny valley because while they have the body shape of a human, they have wings and where their head is, two bottomless eyes peer out from some horrible concoction of creatures not of this world. Dark Star Thresh does not fit into uncanny valley because he's very obviously nonhuman, what with his body looking a like a galaxy, neither does Thresh as a spirit. However, he is not abstract in design, so he doesn't a feeling of terrified confusion either.
Simply put, the direction they wanted to go with Dark Star is not suited to Thresh. We know why Thresh does what he does, because he finds pleasure in doing so, a very human emotion. In fact, the entire character is based on this human emotion, the fact he finds pleasure in tormenting people for all eternity. Thresh's skin, Deep Terror is a very obvious nod to Lovecraft and his creatures, The Deep Ones and Cthulhu, however, no dialogue change was made, and it's makes sense because you can't expect them to change dialogue to fit every fantasy. But if they do change dialogue to fit the fantasy the skins present, they better do it god damn smart and for the right champs, and Thresh's wasn't smart or for the right champion.
If you ask me, this skin should've gone to Bard. Bard as a whole fits many of the requirements needed to fit the style of Lovecraft. The idea behind the skin could be that Bard, that while on his quest to maintain cosmic balance, he has taken over the realities of universes and could end the existence of it whenever he pleased. And you know what, it's a more diverse fantasy than Dark Star Thresh is too, since Bard is usually portrayed as a good guy and a cosmic keeper, this could be a lawful evil side of him that could've or could be.
But I'm not a bard main, I don't know why bard mains enjoy the character, or if they even care and just like his kit. Regardless, I'm curious what you all think of what I had to say. And please if you notice any words missing or misspellings, let me know because I did this very late at night and sometimes my eyes get a bit droopy.
tl;dr somebody get Dark Star Thresh a snickers
