Vayne's New Lore

[BEWARE: THERE ARE SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU HAVE NOT READ VAYNE'S NEW LORE!]

So there I was, checking the League of Legends news feed, when I notice that Vayne was given two rather large lore updates.

Now, before I get into it, I would just like to note that I am a huge fan of Vayne. She is my most played champion with over 125,000 mastery and her lore + in-game kit are the reasons I enjoy her so much as a champion.

After reading her newly updated lore, I have to say that I was extremely disappointed in the direction Riot chose to take her.

Vayne's original theme was Batman-esque in style. Both of her parents were brutally murdered by a witch and she managed to hide from the vile creature until it left. From that day forward, she committed herself to hunting practitioners of the dark arts.

The new lore gave us a look into some of the events we had not previously known about, specifically about the person who took her on as an apprentice, Frey. Now, I am "okay" with and completely understand why Vayne would kill her with little to no remorse after finding out that she had practiced the dark arts. She mercilessly kills all who have partaken in them, no matter what the intent.

What I am not okay with is how Vayne is portrayed in her new lore. She was changed from a ruthless purifier of dark magic to a sadistic maniac who derives pleasure out of toying with her targets before silencing them (just like the witch did who killed her parents).

If I want to play as a psychopathic killer, Jhin already fills that role. This is supposed to be Vayne, not Jhin. She is supposed to be the slayer of darkness so that families can sleep at night without having to keep one eye open. She is supposed to be the person the shadows fear, not the person who is becoming the shadow herself.

I understand that Riot cannot please everyone all of the time, but this particular lore update left a very sour taste in my mouth. I think they tried too hard to make Vayne's story unnecessarily ironic and took away from the core of what she is supposed to be: The Night Hunter.

Vayne's path has always been about going to any length to eliminate black magic. That takes her to some extremely dark places. Lucian has a similar issue, but it's tempered by the love for his wife, and he even mentions in Shadow and Fortune that revenge can't be allowed to consume you, or you'll become what you hate.

Vayne is a living, breathing example. She dove too deep.

It's actually an interesting take on the drive to fulfill your mission. She sees these creatures as evil, vile beings that shouldn't be allowed to exist, and thinks that anyone involved with them in support is evil as well. She thinks that what she's doing is good, as she's ridding the world of these demons, but in reality she's turning into the very thing she hates.

I don't know, I'm not a vayne player, so maybe it's not my place. But I just find it interesting.

Sorry you were disappointed, though. I hope that there was a story you liked here, because it would be a shame if you didn't find any stories that stood out to you. And here's hoping Vayne begins to move in the direction you want.

On a similar note (not trying to disparage your opinion or anything), but does anyone notice that literally every time anybody has a problem with the new lore it is always because the character gains flaws. People really hate whenever their main isn't a nice person.

When you are describing who you want vayne to be it sounds like you are describing who lucian currently is.

I would actually be fine with her going insane considering the circumstances but killing Frey was the limit for me.

I like this direction better because it changes her from just being league's batman and that she can now be an antagonist or protagonist depending on what the story calls for.

So she went from being Batman to being the Punisher.

I absolutely loved it, I think it represents Vayne players state of mind PERFECTLY -

In lane phase:

You are getting dicked on by your lane opponents so hard = Vayne is young, weak and monsters kill her parents.

The tilt and salt starts to build in from all of the dicking = Vayn's hatred for black magics.

Nevertheless, you didn't choose to play Vayne for nothing, so you keep going for that cs and tryharding in general with the help of your much needed (!) support = Frey notices Vayne's determination and help her to get stronger.

Mid-late:

Now you are salty af and tilted out of your mind it has been around 25 min of ass pounding for you and you just had it.. so you throw some toxicity towards your support for a little mistake he did = Vayne is consumed by her burning hatred, the moment she realize Fred used black magic she kills her (flam her).

Late game:

Finally, at last, you are strong now and can sodimize all your evil opponents but because you got salty af it's personal now and you will enjoy it! It's time for them to PAY hahahaha = Vayne enjoys it, nothing even comes close to killing enemies in a slow and agonizing fashion.

After the game ended:

This isn't in the lore now but hopefully it will be some day.

You obviously won the game, after all you are Vayne in late game, but you can't stop thinking - was it worth it? All the salt and flaming the person who helped you through the long lanning phase, you don't know what is right anymore, why continue to play? = Vayne's past is starting to catch her up, all the things she have done, the monstrosities, heavying heavily on her soul

I agree with you completely. I feel like Vayne should be a "Night Hunter" for the sake of protecting the innocent rather than for the joy. If they were to remove those few bits such as, "Because it’s fun" - _Monsters _, then Vayne would honestly have one of the greatest lores in the game. But nonetheless, every part of the update (other than the sadistic characteristic she adopted) is really well made and enjoyable. It adds more depth to the character and makes playing her more fun.

I think that Vayne Lore (Bio) didn't bring us deep enough in her mind to witness her brakedown (because she had one, and not when she saw her family die, not only at least).

To me it looks like she has taken the path that the Batman of "Batman vs Superman" was taking in terms of both violence and mental illness.
