Vayne's New Lore
[BEWARE: THERE ARE SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU HAVE NOT READ VAYNE'S NEW LORE!]
So there I was, checking the League of Legends news feed, when I notice that Vayne was given two rather large lore updates.
Now, before I get into it, I would just like to note that I am a huge fan of Vayne. She is my most played champion with over 125,000 mastery and her lore + in-game kit are the reasons I enjoy her so much as a champion.
After reading her newly updated lore, I have to say that I was extremely disappointed in the direction Riot chose to take her.
Vayne's original theme was Batman-esque in style. Both of her parents were brutally murdered by a witch and she managed to hide from the vile creature until it left. From that day forward, she committed herself to hunting practitioners of the dark arts.
The new lore gave us a look into some of the events we had not previously known about, specifically about the person who took her on as an apprentice, Frey. Now, I am "okay" with and completely understand why Vayne would kill her with little to no remorse after finding out that she had practiced the dark arts. She mercilessly kills all who have partaken in them, no matter what the intent.
What I am not okay with is how Vayne is portrayed in her new lore. She was changed from a ruthless purifier of dark magic to a sadistic maniac who derives pleasure out of toying with her targets before silencing them (just like the witch did who killed her parents).
If I want to play as a psychopathic killer, Jhin already fills that role. This is supposed to be Vayne, not Jhin. She is supposed to be the slayer of darkness so that families can sleep at night without having to keep one eye open. She is supposed to be the person the shadows fear, not the person who is becoming the shadow herself.
I understand that Riot cannot please everyone all of the time, but this particular lore update left a very sour taste in my mouth. I think they tried too hard to make Vayne's story unnecessarily ironic and took away from the core of what she is supposed to be: The Night Hunter.
