Riot I believe you got a lot of criticism towards your new skins over the few days, And I made my own post which has a lot of upvotes by now... https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/6wAyfWzu-i-had-enough-of-technology-skins

I want to tell you one thing, The mecha genre itself has deflated massively the past few years, and is hardly considered as cool content over here in Asia anymore. And i want to give few points why this has happened so you can rethink your ideas of releasing a horde of them by giving gundam as a example.

  1. Deflation of the community Although "robots" seems like the future, over the last decade the mecha genre failed to produce any innovative "designs" most notably after 2009 it has the tendency to become stale. One of the most strong robot franchise "Gundam" failed to appeal to new audiences and is now in a deflative status focusing to regular consumers. Mostly men over their twenties or, middle aged men. The community always talks about the "good old days" rather than the new series. Talking about the old days, there was actually a female fanbase around mechs especially around the SEED and OO era, but is now completely non-existent. The fanbase are now only the geekiest of geeks in their thirties. A really SMALL demographic despite what everybody thinks.

  2. Settings - robots are for "war" Asia has not been involved in war for a long time. Especially in my country (Japan) it is now considered the best to not uncover the horrors of it to revive imperialism. The atrocities committed, clashing ideologies, soldiers fighting for something they do not know. It has become a sort of taboo. Being said, the mecha genre has a cliche of being "anti-war" by doing "war" and this has gone for ages. But nowadays, this is considered as hypocritical action and indecisive. In Asia people fight their own personal "wars" everyday in their own communities and within is now the new trend...The sort of the stuff what Steven Armstrong said in Metal gear Revengeance. The concept of "war" is something near unimaginable. So mechas become something of a past.

So yeah...the mecha genre has barely moved for a decade and is now considered as a living fossil. Even magical girls had their own innovation and made it fresh. Releasing mechas over and over is basically like reproducing and recycling brands that are over 10 years old. Everyone will get tired of it.

Comment 2.

"Asia" is not the whole world.

Uhm but doesn't Mecha refer to the giant robots piloted by humans?

These robots are however just humansized robots(who are massproduced and humansized),so they aren't even part of the mecha-genre.(as you can have robots in a lot of genres)
