What's with Riot and humanizing characters?
So, recently, I've noticed a weird and honestly pretentious trend in Riot's storytelling. Why do all the villains and heros have to be humanized? Even the ones that seem like they shouldn't be? The Darkin used to be just "ancient demons?? idk" then they were Targon's mortal enemy aliens (cool) and now they're sad pathetic humans trapped in weapons? Look, you just can't satisfy the "Badass demon" itch quite with the whiny, sassy excuses we have today.
Warwick? Used to be a hunter. Now he's Punisher X Venom.
Urgot? Now he's Bane.
Zac? Used to be a nice slime boy. nOw HiS PAreNTs ArE dEAD oHHHhH nOOO boo HoOooooo. Also he has this weird and super extra psychic thing going on??
Even Nocturne (Mah poor neglected nightmare) got a throwaway line about him being able to only feel pain and inflict it on others. And now Kayle and Morg are getting their own "Saddest backstory evers?" Why? Now, this isn't to say that I think that all of these changes were bad. Hardly. I still think Urgot is satisfyingly evil, and Warwick's new depth honestly doesn't bother me. And my boy Nocturne is still doing his eldritch night beat. But, here's the thing.
Why does every character have to be some kind of super profound examination of the human condition? Why can't we have more monolithic good and evil exemplars? More inhuman, or alien entities? If you paint everything in shades of grey, contrast is gonna SUFFER, and everything will be bland.
Not every character needs to be 4-dimensional. We knew Kayle as "Nice girl angel Samus." and Morg as "Mean angel thot mage." I don't understand why that kind of character simplicity can't exist in modern League. This is a fantastic world where anything can happen. Stop making everything act so human. There are other options.
