My first reaction to Pyke...

I wish riot would make a champ that's actually scary.

I mean if you are going to do horror, you should go for something actually disturbing or horrifying. You should go for something that comments on humanity and makes people think. Maybe allegorical for real life events. Take Godzilla. When it was released, the fire bombing of Tokyo and two cities getting nuked by an unstoppable war machine Japan had provoked was fresh on everyone's mind. A giant monster that Japan was unable to defend against made sense for the time. Poe's writing worked because it dealt with madness most of all. Lovecraft worked in the form of hint unreliably after you've built a base of madness.

Pyke seems like a satire aimed at 12 year olds. "I got fed to the fishies and now I'm back for revenge, garr!"

On that note, he looks rather human for a walking pile of fish shit. I mean you'd think after the Last Jedi debacle, your hype team would know what Checkov's Gun is by now. If you are going to hint that he was eaten by a giant fish, then I'm expecting something that would look digested, or at least thoroughly chewed up and missing a chunk of his body and not a generic bloated corpse that drowned.

Now if you want to go with drowned corpse coming back for revenge, then you needed to have shown that he died by drowning or freezing to death in the water. Get rid of the fish entirely. Maybe put a few obvious holes in his story, just enough to make him seem unreliable. Better yet, make him have gone crazy and then he jumped off the ship. Something terrible happened on the boat in the middle of the ocean and he tried to escape the only way his panicked mind would allow and now he's back to warn others about whatever it was.

Who said he was digested?

Bruh chill, it was a 30 second teaser. You're making a ton of assumptions

Checkov's Gun is bad to be used universally. It's just a rule that occasionally works, mostly only in situations in which pacing and time or space restraint is of utter most importance, but otherwise it's not strictly needed to be followed to create a good narrative.

For those who don't know, Checkov's Gun is a rule that goes as follows:

Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there

It's a good rule of thumb to look to to remind the writer to at least do some proper fat-cutting of stories and designs to avoid bloating, but there is otherwise no need to specifically tie everything directly to the narrative, or at least not all the time. For instance, a short story would benefit the most from this rule, whereas any things like the storyboard for an exploration RPG wouldn't mind lots of detours.

To some extent we can apply to this Pyke guy. Just because there was a sea creature of sort in his teaser (Nagakabouros?), doesn't mean he has to be wrapped entirely around it.

I don't know what you're on about because Pyke's visual design looks like it's going to be one of League's scariest yet.

Personally if I'm thinking Lovecraft, I'm excited for the potential reworks of Fiddlesticks and Chogath more than anything.

They can't make his character design too graphic though, since it would raise the age rating of the game in several countries(they already had to censor vladimirs blood in some regions,so making him look half-digested would definitely not work).

Also from what we know,he might actually comment on a rather common problem in todays society, the bystander-syndrome,where people don't take action to help someone in need.

Heck this actually reminds me of the case where a bunch of teens filmed a drowning man and made fun of him instead of helping him, which happened in july 2017,the time where Pyke was likely in the early iteration-phases.

How do you know he's not missing a chunk of his stomach? Or maybe the shark bit his no-no parts off? Maybe he wants revenge for getting neutered by a fish.

I like when people judge something acting like they are an interesting person.

Whatever theme they wanted to create with this is their job and their choice.

You're reading too much into a 30-ish second teaser. We'll probably find out next week why he doesn't look like he's been digested and maybe some of those holes will get filled.

I hope the next champion they finally make something interesting again. The last time I actually was impressed at a new champion was Tahm Kench and I don't remember when he was released but it had to be at least a few years ago. All of these recent releases have just been so boring.

The lore and idea behind most of the champions is unique but the kit on them just never lives up to my expectations. I expected something grand with Ivern, but was so massively disappointed upon his release. I was hoping for some awesome champion who spawns huge forests with his attacks and instead get this guy who instantly makes camps vanish and throws bushes on the ground. It's as though Riot has no creativity whatsoever.

When I look at this guy in the teaser, I can't help but think that he's going to be some overpowered Illaoi and Kayn hybrid with nothing interesting at all except for the fact that he's strong as hell (due to needing to be a Support with kill potential). He reminds me mostly of Darius and god knows, I remember Darius at release like it was yesterday. The last thing this game needs is another repeat of the nightmare that was Darius from those days...

I mena arguably we don't have much to judge from but yeah, if that's as scary as they can go... Riot has really lost its shine

My first thought was "Tahm and Kalista have a lovechild?"

What Last Jedi debacle?
