Patch 4.18 Volume Sliders

Hey all!

I wanted to bring into attention a new feature that the audio team has been working on, with hopes that players everywhere get the most use out of it. With Patch 4.18, comes greater power over your League of Legends mix. If you navigate to "Sound" in the "Options" menu, you'll find that a "Pings" and "Ambience" slider has been added to the options menu as well. Bumpin!

The pings slider will control ping volume yes, but what about Ambience? As of now, all of the environment sound such as wind, birds, fire, etc, will be controlled by the Ambience slider, along with any other sounds that are not considered gameplay impactful. For example, the water mills on Dominion. While these help immerse us within the game world, hearing that sound offers zero gameplay feedback. It may be considered a "Hard" effect", but in no way does it help you kill the wild Teemo.

On the flip side, we have the alters and health pack on the Twisted Treeline, which are extremely important. Their sounds have been kept in the SFX bus in order to provide that sonic feedback to the player. When you stand near a health pack, you will hear it's aura. When an altar opens, the whispering souls will be calling. As players, these are the things we listen for, and are considered gameplay impactful.

Finally, the options menu for sound now has SEVEN meaty, wholesome sliders fighting for space in a small window. This can be intimidating at first glance. In the future, I'd love to grab some artists and deck this menu out. Get a golden decorative dragon surrounding the master slider, organize it in an easy to read way, etc. For now however, we hope that these new sliders will help you find audio clarity in game, and improve your League of Legends experience.

I appreciate this getting split out. I don't, however, appreciate the first ping in my first game after this update blowing my eardrums out, now my ears are ringing.

Can I ask you to set initial volumes besides the Master control to a lower setting (50%?) for new installs or patches with sound changes? I do really like my ears and would like it if they continued to work... AND WOULD SOMEONE ANSWER THAT DAMN TELEPHONE!

Great job, I know a lot have wanted this. How about next, add a volume icon next to the Mute option which will simply mute a specific persons pings?

The mute button doesn't mute pings does it? Now I'm really second guessing myself, because I know it mutes their taunt/dance noises...

I'd like a slider for server location. Clearly not meaty enough!

What do I set "ping volume" to, in order to get it back to default pre-4.18 levels?

So far I'm trying 30, but I'm undecided.

Flemman10/9/2014, 11:53:05 AM2 votes

it's a good option but, for me, give a 0 volume ping possibility is not the best for team communication (after test 10/100 seems to be the best volume)

Ping are there to help poeple with no map awarness, just visual on minimap will not help them that much as they probably don't check it :s

OOOOH. That is why pings were crazy loud. Meh.

That could have saved my old headphones when you changed the muting ping sounds along with the player years ago, thanks for fixing it!

Nothing is more annoying than listening to the same ping sounds for 4 years.

This is a great change... works perfectly for me on both Mac and Windows.

I agree that there needs to be some love given to the menu system (except for the hotkey stuff - thats nice the way it is - quick and easy to change)..

I would like the sliders to be a little more reliable, I changed the ping volume from 100% to 60% and barely noticed a difference. Below 60% it seemed to be a huge difference, but then in the next match I couldn't hear the pings, then they were too loud the following match. I'm not sure why but there seems to be a little inconsistency with the sound volume there. Also which slider controls how loud Sion's ult is. When I am running over my computer speakers it's fine, but when I have headphones on I go slightly more deaf every time he ults.

Cool feature. Although it's altars, not alters (grammar nazierino op)

New boards suck, bring GD back. Really unconventional to navigate.

Is it possible to add the annoying starting game noise as ambience sound, you know the one that plays until the light disappears in the middle of the spawn area? Its like super annoying.

I didn't even realize that I wanted this so badly. I couldn't think of a way better than the temporary ping limit to combat ping spamming but you've really outdone yourselves. Fantastic addition, Riot.

Adding an option that amplifies this sound for the first 10 seconds of a game would be extremely useful

Would it be possible to have individual ping volume settings per player? i.e., if only one player is spamming pings then we could set their volume lower, etc.

Troi Oi Thuan10/10/2014, 12:37:53 AM1 votes

Love the idea now I can adjust my volume and have better pings =)

I honestly cannot think of anything more important for riot to fix. Good job guys!

Best thing ever. So tired of having those loud pings. xD
