Jules, the Defender of Humanity

Hey dudes! To me it seems like a lot of the recent champions are kinda one-dimensional on the good and evil scale of stuff, so I had an idea for a champion that's a little more complex.

So, let's start with their name and looks. Her name is Jules. She stands at about 5'2", so she's on the short side of things. She's "short-waisted" and her shoulders are broad, and she has very well-toned legs and glutes. Her arms are muscular, and a bit on the lean side. Jules was considered very beautiful during her youth, with delicate facial features and softly arcing eyebrows, smooth chocolate brown hair, and a sparkle in her green eyes. At present, Jules' hair has grown long and she wears it in a simple braid over her shoulder, and has bags under her eyes and appears tired, though it's still evident that she could be quite attractive.

Jules wears a moss green cropped vest with a hood and two breast pockets, with the side panels being made from a stretchy black material; under that she wears a simple tank top, with black forearm warmers. On her head, her black leather goggles are pushed up, things with red bug eye lenses; on one side is an antennae sticking out of a frequency control knob. Around Jules' neck is a black bandanna with X'ed out Zaun and Piltover symbols on it that she uses to obscure the lower half of her face when working. Jules wears green denim pants that have been rolled up past her knees, and on her belt are a buttoned moss green pouch and a remote detonator with a few buttons. Jules wears heavy-duty black kneepads with silvery metal plates on the front. Her black leather boots are hex-tech powered and have metal toes, with tech in the thick soles that glows green; over her boots are metal shin guards that have overlapping plates.

Jules' main tool when working is a large hex-tech rifle, the HT-50CGR v. 2.14; it is as tall as she is. The barrel is about half the length, and has a muzzle brake. The barrel comes out of a black fitting like part of a grinder; the front grip is slightly behind the fitting, and is ribbed black vulcanized rubber; the rear grip is similar, sitting just behind the trigger. The butt of the rifle is a high-density rubber with a gel foam pad on the end- both are black. On one side of the silvery body of the rifle is the ammunition guage, which glows green. The scope is a trim black tube, the vision frequency controlled by the knob on Jules' goggles. The rifle has a black cord carry strap with a sliding shoulder pad.

HER STORY: Jules was born in Piltover to very wealthy parents. They were some of the leading scholars of their day, and had Jules later in life, well after their own youth. They raised her in a strictly cotrolled and limited environment, giving her a classical education. This was chiefly done through two robotic servants, Jules usually only seeing her parents at meal-time; her play and study were both overseen by the two robots.

Jules was not entirely unhappy, as her parents commendned her on her advancement in her schooling and tech creations, but as she grew Jules began to chafe against the sterility of her upbringing. She was never allowed outside the mansion, and knew little of the world besides what she learned through her robotic tutors and her parent's galas. In her youth, it was her robotic tutors that Jules hated: their mechanical speech, lack of human understanding, and limited responses; they became symbols of the cruelty of science.

So, one day, after secretly constructing devices to override her tutor's programming by causing a diversion in the kitchen, Jules snuck out of her house. The world was so bright and animated and colorful it took her breath away. But, as she watched the city from the rooftop of a bakery, she noticed firetrucks rushing towards a huge blaze: with a start, she realized it was her parent's mansion- the kitchen distraction had gone terribly overboard, the blaze intended to be small, but quickly catching and spreading. Panicking, Jules decided to wait in the bakery, and call home. No one answered. After waiting for hours and calling more, Jules went back on the roof, and saw in the distance a charred husk occupying the place where her home had been.

Tough it was rough, Jules quickly learned how to survive on the streets of Piltover. She spent the first several months crafting small automatons and radio control devices for sale as she moved around. During her time on the streets, Jules noticed an increase in the spread of automated service: at banks, stores, as walking companions; she feared more children would have to suffer through a robotic childhood, as she did. So, while still in her teenage years, Jules targeted a robotic construction plant. Using tech she designed, at night she disabled the security systems and used a homemade accelerant to burn down the storage and assembly areas of the plant. Jules saw the talk of her attack in the newspapers, and of how the plant would be out of commission for months. For the first time, Jules felt like she had made a difference.

But after being caught and imprisoned, Jules began to doubt herself. Being incarcerated, she now saw the potential for robotic cruelty within man, and that she had never truly been free- and this made her begin to hate her parents, for treating her as an experiment. Slowly, Jules used bits and pieces of utensils and smuggled wiring to construct the tech she needed to escape, and fled during the night- but not before leaving a surprise in the warden's office. In the open now, she continued the work that got her imprisoned, not only targeting robotic construction plants with questionable ethics, but also nobles and wealthy elite known to keep slaves. And, after assassinating a mayoral candidate with hidden ties to the snuff film industry, she was imprisoned a second time. The tech was constructed faster, but Jules took her time in planning the escape. She not only liberated herself, but dozens and dozens of others, taking out key structural points and bringing down the entire main complex- it was the biggest prison break in Piltover history.

After her big escape, Jules retreated to Zaun. The looser restrictions on tech were a relief, and she began to flex her creative muscles, designing increasingly advanced machinery and weapons; she became known in Zaun for her inventions, rather than her criminal ventures. The more she spent time in Zaun, however, the more she noticed how technology was imposed on humanity, and used for torture and worse. So, Jules turned on Zaun, eliminating the openly criminal but untouched inhabitants, and the tech lords who were more machine than man. She was more quickly discovered than in Piltover, but after five escapes from execution, she realized she needed her own space to operate, and fled the city.

Though never in direct contact with her, an underground movement devoted to her work and philosophy has sprung up, making her goggles and bandanna a criminally controversial counter-culture symbol. Jules now operates from an airship base, keeping a close eye on Zaun and Piltover from above. Striking with precision and purpose, she does her best to keep humanity human.

IN-GAME/PEDIA BIO: Born to wealthy Piltover scholars, Jules was raised like a test subject, tutored and watched over by two robots, knowing little of the outside world. She long for more freedom and human contact, and reprogrammed her tutors to cause a diversion as she ran away from home- but, the distraction got out of hand, and proved fatal to her parents.

After spending a few hard years on the streets crafting tech to survive, still in her youth, Jules began to resent the spread of robotic replacements, and decided to take action against a robotic manufacturing plant- thus beginning her life of crime. After fleeing Piltover Jules spent time in Zaun, honing her technological crafts. Early in her career she was considered catchable, but after two prison breaks- the second being then the largest in Piltover history- and escaping five execution attempts, the authorities turned their attention to overhauling their justice system.

The beautiful child she once was is now long forgotten, her goggles and mask have become a subversive symbol of resistance. Though she has a devoted, cult-like following, Jules operates on her own, looking to bring some measure of justice to those who abuse technology and use it to abuse humanity.

Champion Select: Only humanity can move humanity forwards. Champion Ban: I won't be weighed down.

Starting A Game: Time to elevate the stakes. Let's make them remember this one! Load up and get ready to roll out. Alright. Get everything you need, then head out.

First Move: Target's in sight. Let's get on the move! Precision and purpose. Wheels down! Time for some action. It's not that bad around here. Such a shame it won't be staying this nice. Alright! There's no going back, now!

Movement: A little more progress... One foot in front of the other. Just a bit more space... Stay sharp... Let me get a better angle on this. Every step counts. A little bit closer... I saw it, too! I've got the shot lined up. ((teammate pings for assistance)) Clear out! I'm heading in for a shorter shot! ((teammate pings for assistance)) I hope this doesn't short out my boots. ((moving in the river)) Over there looks like a good spot. A smidge closer to the action... Hat up! That seems like a great pick for a hide. I need more quality cover.

Attacking: You're still in my sights! You can't dodge homing rounds, kid. Two hairs and some air... I was actually aiming behind you, but okay. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Direct hit. Pink mist sighting! C.B.S.! ((after a critical strike)) Reloaded and ready. There's more where that came from. You're outdated! ((attacking an enemy Camille, Urgot, or Viktor)) Daydreamer! ((attacking an enemy Camille, Urgot, or Viktor)) You need an upgrade! ((attacking an enemy Camille, Urgot, or Viktor)) Not enough human or machine in you. ((attacking an enemy Camille, Urgot, or Viktor))

Killing An Enemy Unit: HA! Got 'eem! They never even saw it coming. What a waste of flesh and technology. ((killing an enemy Camille, Urgot, or Viktor)) You'll never take the place of humanity. ((killing an enemy Blitzcrank or Orianna)) I hope you're recycled into something useful. ((killing an enemy Blitzcrank, Camille, Urgot, or Viktor, Orianna)) You've got potential, kid. But your work is too abstract. ((killing an enemy Jinx)) I'm not on Piltover's side. I'm on humanity's side. ((killing an enemy Caitlyn or Vi)) Obsolete garbage. ((killing an enemy Camille, Urgot, or Viktor or Orianna)) One shot, one kill. Another oppressor crushed. You gave up your chance of being saved when you gave up your humanity. ((killing an enemy Warwick, Dr. Mundo, Singed, Camille, Urgot, or Viktor)) You were way out of position. Such a shame you got in my way... ((killing an enemy Ekko)) The early bird is the first target in sight. ((killing an enemy Swain)) King me. ((killing an enemy Jarvan IV)) You'll make a nice sand castle. ((killing an enemy Azir)) The show's over, you talentless hack. ((killing an enemy Jhin)) Now that, THAT was art. ((killing an enemy Jhin)) That's one small step for me, one giant leap forwards for mankind. ((scoring a Pentakill that included an Urgot, Camille, Viktor, Warwick, Dr. Mundo, Singed, Blitzcrank, or Orianna)) Rust in peace. ((killing an enemy Blitzcrank or Orianna)) I have a strong hunch that hammer was compensating for something. ((killing an enemy Jayce)) Humanity is the ultimate weapon. ((killing an enemy Kayn)) Stick to detective work, and leave the shooting to someone who knows how to handle a weapon. ((killing an enemy Caitlyn)) Shoddy policing and shooting. You'll never catch me. ((killing an enemy Caitlyn)) You'll never take us alive! ((scoring an Ace near a dead teammate)) This is just the beginning. ((starting a Killing Spree or destroying an enemy Outer Turret)) Program the brain, not the heartbeat. ((killing an enemy Viktor, Camille, Urgot, Blitzcrank, or Orianna)) Did you think I didn't know about your ties to Zaun? ((killing an enemy Singed or Swain)) Nice and clean. On to the next one. I may use hextech rounds, but ducking isn't magic. Peace belongs to those who fight for it. Someone had to be made an example of. ((scoring a First Blood))

Taunting: If you do it for pay you're doing it wrong. ((taunting an enemy Jhin)) I'm not the resistance- I'm the last line of defense. ((taunting an enemy Viktor, Caitlyn, or Vi)) After I clean up Piltover and Zaun, your shiny little city is next. ((taunting an enemy Demacian)) Try to outrun my shot. I'll even give you a head start. If you're ready to die for your cause, I'll be glad to help. Last to three headshots buys the winner a drink. ((taunting an allied Jhin or Caitlyn)) I don't think you understand the gravity of the situation.

On Recalling: Time for a quick reload. Back to base to check the map. This isn't the end. I'll be back for more. ((after killing an enemy)) Don't think I'm even close to finished. ((after killing an enemy))

On Respawning: Back on the mission. I can't be held down. I won't be silenced!

On Casting Gravity Pulse: Stay right there. Don't even think about running.

On Casting Lunar Lift: Clear into orbit. Went over the horizon, that time. I can barely see them now! That's gonna hurt when they land.

On Casting Moon Jump: A little hop over here... Time to bounce! Liftoff achieved! Gravity defied!

On Casting Singularity: Gravity field deployed! Field delivered on target. Time to detonate! Time to bring 'em back down to earth.

Joke: ((Jules rises up in the air with her boots, swaying out of control for a moment)) ((Jules plants her rifle on the ground, using the barrel to play a looping, sultry saxophone line)) Why did the poro cross the r- oh, heard that one before, huh?

Placing A Ward: I'm gonna need the dope. I need a spotter. Gotta keep my six protected. ((on a hand-held radio))Area's clear. Dropping in some vision for later. No blindspots.

In The Shop: Ooh! Haven't seen something like this in a while. Oh, this is gorgeous! ((buying a hextech item)) Does this come with the blueprints? ((buying a hextech item)) Hmm, reminds me of something I designed... ((buying a hextech item)) A refined design for a more civilized age. ((buying a hextech item)) Sometimes the solution is just firing faster. ((buying a Rapidfire Cannon)) This'll be great for sweeping the area ((buying a warding trinket)) Looks like it'll be worth a try. The balance on this is way too far forwards. ((buying a BF Sword)) Time to welcome them to the party. ((buying a jungle item)) A decent design. I'll give it a shot.

On Dying: Ugh, caught out... Should've swept the area again... At least I died human. This won't end with me! Take my rifle- the instruction manual's in my back pocket. ((near a living teammate)) Clear out! I forgot when I set the charge to trigger! ((near a living teammate)) There will always be someone like me to stop someone like you.

Laugh: Jules' first laugh is upliftingly warm and genuine, unreserved; her second laugh is a triumphant "hahaaaa!"

DANCE: Jules' dance is a short martials arts routine: rolling forwards and doing a low spinning sweep kick, springing up into a flying knee and downwards elbow strike, landing and repeating the moves to form a box shape.

LOG-IN SCREEN MUSIC: It starts with beeps increasing in pitch and pace, then with an explosion breaks into a fiery electronic neoclassical djent piece. The piece slows into more standard djent before moving into a polyrythmic fugue, a heroic chord progression playing on the synthesizer in the background. After the fugue, the beat stops and the heroic chord progression subtly turns into something more tender, the counter melody from the fugue playing over it, building up and up before looping around.

FRIENDS/ALLIES/RIVALS/ENEMIES: Rivals: Though comparatively friendly, Jinx and Jules have been rivals since Jinx first came onto the scene. Jinx's daring bombardments were compared to Jules' work, and Jules' arsenal was outshined by Jinx's; they each feed off each other in a strange symbiotic relationship, advancing the other's cause: Jules seeing Jinx as erratic and looking to maximize her own work with targeted strikes, and Jinx seeing Jules as too straight-laced and stuffy, looking to maximize the collateral impact of her work for fun. Though they would never admit it to anyone, they each see something of the other in themselves, and this is what keeps their rivalry from becoming hostile- and perhaps what keeps Piltover and Zaun from being wiped out completely.

Enemies: Caitlyn, Vi, Urgot, Camille, Viktor, Warwick. Being an enemy of the state, Jules has crossed paths with, Caitlyn, Vi, Camille, and Warwick on multiple occasions. Jules harbors a particularly bitter hatred for Caitlyn due to her time in Piltover's prison system, seeing Caitlyn as a high society doll that was never brave enough to act on her own interests, and became an instrument of the system; and, in addition, they have fierce arguments over their markmanship skills.

One of the very, very few to prove elusive to The Gray Lady, Jules has been a frustration to Camille since the beginning of her career. Camille has the prestige and honor of her name to keep up, which is hindered by Jules continually evading capture thanks to her boots and destroying the manufacturers of the replacement parts Camille needs. Camille sees Jules as the epitome of insolence, and Jules sees Camille as the epitome of systematized humanity- flesh replaced by robotic purpose and machinery.

During her time in Zaun, Jules had several clashes with Warwick. Even for Zaun, she had racked up a body count that would make the other hardened criminals of the district vacate their bowels- but Warwick knew that she was human, and that if she could bleed, she could be stopped. At least, that was the theory. During one of their skirmishes, Jules' recently designed gravity rifle completely annihilated his right forearm, and after getting it replaced he had to exercise a caution that warred with his animal nature.

Jules first learned of Urgot while being held for execution: a former Noxian, a juggernaut as much machine as man. Despite his inhumanity, what ignited Jules' hatred for Urgot was his philosophy of pain. She saw it as contradictory and hypocritical, given his robotic enhancements, and thus began to save those the headsman attempted to execute- worthy and unfortunate alike, death averted with a well-timed shot from her rifle. Urgot believe the ideal he embodies would instantly prove Jules unworthy should they ever meet, and for every one that survives his trials, another is chosen to take their place.

Viktor is a man Jules remembers from her youth. Though his expertise was outside her parent's fields of study, he attended a handful of their galas, being a prestigious Academy student; she remembered how his eyes always leapt to the tech in the mansion, and his fingers were never quite still. And, as Jules began her criminal career, she learned of Viktor's inventions that crept ever closer to the places that had always belonged to humanity. Jules began several sabotage campaigns in Zaun, but one by one they were all contained by Viktor, and in their wake, the factories and businesses became less and less human to compensate for the incidents. Though their goals were at odds for years, only recently did Viktor discover Jules' identity through security tape footage. Instantly, he knew. There was only a faint trace of the timid girl there, but a sliver of humanity was all he needed- the war was on. Everything that he knew Jules loved of humanity and all that she hated of his Glorious Evolution were now tools to be used against her. Quickly becoming aware she was targeted and following the trail back to Viktor, Jules began to strike back, knowing that only Zaun, Viktor, or her would be coming away from their conflict intact.
