[Champion Concept] Doza, The Legendary Marksman

BowieTheNifty·3/1/2017, 4:46:01 PM·6 votes·1,780 views

Another month comes by and with it comes a new set of champion concepts. So BowietheNifty here to contribute to the broads and perhaps give something new to the community. For those who follow my concepts know that I am currently working on a couple of marksman champions. Well in this case, this concept is a little different. While this champion could work as an ADC I would prefer to call this guy something else. It has been tried by a few creators on the community, but I have attempted to construct a support marksman. Now it may seem far fetched, but breaking the mold is something I have tried recently. Mechanically Doza is nothing too special, but hopefully he will be rather useful to his supportive role. As always, I appreciated feedback so feel free to leave your thoughts, concerns, or questions in the comments below. Anyways without further adieu, here is Doza, The Legendary Marksman.

Doza, The Legendary Marksman

Bonus experience increased to 7% from 5% on innate passive - 3/1/2017 Removed bonus experience in only gained by allies the same level or lower as Doza - 3/1/2017

Appearance (Firstly I would like to say that I don't take credit for this art. This is mainly here as a reference to give a general idea of his appearance.) Doza is an older mountain man. While his body maybe aged, it doesn't mean that he would fall over easily. Being strong willed he forces himself a long at his own pace with the help of his trusty weapon as his support. He is a marksman and in his case he actually wields a cross bow. It is a little easily to operate for a man of his age, but still offers the silent nature of a bow compared to rifles. His attire mainly consists of animals he had hunted an skinned long ago. While it isn't fashionable, it is functional and that is all he really cares about.

Lore (This is will a rather short lore. Mini stories may be added soon.)

The legend of Doza is one that has been passed around Runeterra for several centuries. A hunter who’s mastery with any ranged weapon would trump over all else. He could fell any beast, out shoot any man, and some say he could shoot stars out of the sky itself. Of course over the years this legend of a man would become distorted from being passed down. Though there was no marksman that ever got as much praise or recognition as Doza. Because of this, many people would seek out the man for each their own reasons. Some sought to prove that he was nothing but a joke. They would quickly get put into their place. Others wanted to learn from the legend himself to better their skills. If they were accepted as his disciples, then they would learn many great things. Yet for some reason know one knows of any of his disciples, their names forever lost to history. Over the centuries his legacy still grows. New stories seem to surface across Runeterra of a man claiming to be the legend performing almost inhuman actions with a ranged weapon. The thing is, the stories change depending on when they come into being. Some say he wields a bow, others claim it to be a crossbow, a few recall an assortment of throwing weapons, newer stories say that he uses rifles and pistols. How could one man be such a master marksman? Yet tell this day his stories get passed around and some brave enough try to seek out the legend.

Eventually those who seek out Doza happen to find themselves at the base of Mt Targon. There were many brave adventurers that attempted to climb the mountain. Though the journey is a perilous one, and only a few manage to find what they are looking for. Upon reaching a small cabin on near the top, they are greeted by the legend himself. There they learn quite a few things about the legacy. Doza was never one man, in fact Doza isn’t a man at all. Doza is a spirit, a god of the hunt. This god inhabits the body of a mortal man of those who it finds worthy. Those who Doza accepts worthy would undergo training to prepare themselves as a vessel. The vessel forfeits their names, their history, and their body for the legacy. Once they time comes the god will leave the old vessel and enter the new one. This cycle has continued over the centuries so that the legend lives on tell this day. The current Doza is right now an older man. Though he is at the age where he needs an apprentice. Falling here would end the legacy that he vowed to progress. While his body may not be as spry as it used to be, he now must venture off the mountain to find someone worthy to train.

Roles

Primary: Support Secondary: Marksman

Doza is a ranged attack damage based support. While he doesn't support the team with shields or incredible amounts of utility, he does give his lane partner good benefits. He works best when paired with a ranged marksman and tends to be most dominant within the laning phase. Early game he provides his partner with means to out duel their opponents, yet mid to late game he can transition into a secondary carry if needed.

Stats

HP: 592 (+77)
HP5: 3 (+0.9) Mana: 335 (+51) MP5: 5 (+0.4) AD: 59 (+2.1) AS: 0.644 (+2.5%) AR: 25 (+3.6) MR: 30 (+1.25) MS: 325 Range: 575 (ranged)

Abilities Innate - Practice Makes Perfect Passive: When Doza lands a basic attack on a target, they will be marked for 6 seconds. During this time if an Ally damages the marked target with an ability or basic attack they will gain 30/40/50/60% bonus attack speed (half amount for lane minions) for 3 seconds. The duration is doubled if the marked target is hit by a skill shot. Attack Speed bonus can't be refreshed by the same marked twice, but can be by hitting another marked target. If an Ally kills a marked target, they gain 7% bonus experience. A target can't have the mark applied to them again tell 14/11/8/5 seconds after it expires.

  • In-Depth Doza himself has a pretty simple passive. It is a mark that can grant his team mates bonus attack speed if they damage the marked target. Something you need to know is that Doza can not activate the mark himself, it must be a team mate. Multiple team mates can activate the bonus from attacking the same target, as damage doesn't consume the mark. Though team mates can only receive the bonus from the same marked targeted once, but attacking another marked target can refresh the attack speed's duration. Multiple targets can be marked at the same time, but a single target can't be marked consecutively. None targeted abilities against a marked target will actually increase the bonus attack speeds duration to 6 seconds rather then 3. Damage from active items do not grant the bonus attack speed on marked targets. Though it should also be mentioned that allies do gain bonus experience from killing marked targets, this only applies to allies who are the same level or a lower level then Doza.

Q - Hit My Mark Range: 1200 Cool Down: 12/11/10/9/8 seconds Mana Cost: 40/45/50/55/60 Active: Doza fires a shot in a straight line dealing 25/70/115/165/215 (+ 60%AD)(+ 50%AP) physical damage to the first enemy it comes into contact with. The enemy struck is marked by Practice Makes Perfect. If the shot traveled at least 800 units, then Doza and his Allies can target the enemy with one basic attack as if they had 25% more attack range within 6 seconds.

  • In-Depth So this is Doza's main form of poke and damage in his kit. It acts as a simple skill shot with a rather large range. It allows him to keep his distance and give a deal a good amount of damage at the same time. While its scaling isn't the highest, it does scale with his AD and AP. As well the base damage on this ability is quite painful for it being physical damage, but it does one strike one target. Keeping your distance does reward you with this ability. While it doesn't give extra damage, it does allow him and his allies extra poke potential. That additional increased ranged basic attack could mean the difference of receiving a kill after all.

W - Training Dummies Range: 700 cast / 300 dummy radius / 800 wall length Cool Down: 20/19.5/19/18.5/18 seconds Mana Cost: 90/85/80/75/70 Active: Doza sets up 3 training dummies in a line for 6 seconds. These dummies act as impassable terrain. Enemies can attack the dummies to destroy them. Dummies start with 2 health(+1 per every 50 bonus AD for a max of 5).

  • In-Depth Doza's W is a welcome addition to his kit. Creating terrain isn't an ability you see on many champions. It does provide many uses, like preventing a enemies retreat, blocking an enemies advance, or even splitting up a group for a catch. The dummies also have the ability to be destroyed by enemies. While they are clustered like a wall, each dummy can be taken down to allow passage. The dummies start with a set amount of health, but scale up to 5 health max. This is based on bonus AD, not total AD. Still a well timed set of dummies can provide some useful disruption to enemies.

E - Quick Shot Range: 1000 cast / 100~600 damage radius Cool Down: 14/13/12/11/10 seconds Mana Cost: 50 Active: Doza tosses up a bottle high into the air in a targeted direction. Doza or a ranged attacking ally can target the bottle with basic attack to cause it to shatter mid flight. The shards rain down below dealing 5/15/30/50/75(+80/85/90/95/100% of attacks damage)(+20% AD) physical damage and slowing targets by 40% in the area for 3 seconds. The radius starts small getting bigger toward the center of its travel range, and then grows smaller again towards its max distance.

  • In-Depth Doza's E is a bit of a strange ability. In basics think of this as a traveling gangplank barrel, that can be targeted by ranged allies. So when he tosses the bottle, the damage radius depends on distance traveled. At the bottle's highest point is where the radius is at its max, which is about half of its travel distance. As it reaches the max end of its range, then falls to the ground shattering into a very small radius and pitiful damage. Now this abilities damage does scale with the damage of the attack striking it. In a sense it gives an opportunity to give Doza or an ranged ally to perform an AoE basic attack, on-hit effects are included. Though critical strikes do effect the amount of damage, so criting the bottle gives a bunch of AoE damage. The AD scaling of this ability does scale with Doza's AD, not the attackers.

R - The Heir to Doza Range: 650 Cool Down: 180/160/140 seconds Mana: 100 Active: Doza targets an ally champion channeling for 2 seconds deeming them as his successor. Him and his successor will have a competition to see who can kill the most enemy champions within 8/10/12 seconds. For this duration the successor heals 10/20/30(+1 for every 20 AP)(+15% AD if procking Practice Makes Perfect) health on hit for basic attacks against champions, reduced to 20% against everything else. Doza however gains the ability to proc the attack speed bonus from Practice Makes Perfect and his basic attacks/Hit my Mark will deal 1/1.5/2% more damage for every 1% of the target's current health. The winner of the competition gains 5/10/15 permanent attack damage, this is halved if the winner dies within the duration.

  • In-Depth Now Doza's ultimate is one that can be quite powerful. To cast this ability, Doza does need a nearby ally champion to target. So he can't just activate it himself and start dealing massive damage. As well he must complete the channel in order to being the competition. Canceling the channel does refund 50% of the cool down and mana cost, getting interrupted does not. The successor does gain the ability to heal from their basic attacks which grants a bit of sustain in a trade. This on-hit heal is only 20% effective against everything that isn't an enemy champion. Though if the successor does proc a target marked by Practice Makes Perfect then they gain bonus healing based on Doza's AD. On the other end Doza becomes a threat as well. His basic attacks and his Q will do significantly more damage the higher the target's health is. If a target is at full health, well his next basic attack or Q will deal 200% more damage at most. Though this bonus isn't as effective with lower health enemies. The big thing about this ultimate is the permanent attack damage. Now this attack damage is only granted to the winner, who ever kills the most enemy champions for the duration. If it is a draw, then no one gets the bonus. If the winner died, they only receive half the bonus. Keep in mind this ability does have a lengthy cool down, so use it sparingly.

Short Stories Credit to "MG Guardian" for this story

"Father, father! Tell me the story about that man with the bow again! Please, please!"

"What, about ol' Doza? You want to hear that ol' fairytale again, huh? Hah! So be it, but off to bed with you as soon as it is done, fair?"

"Fair!"

"Well then! Ever since the dawn of man itself, there have always been those who strive to become more than what they are. To travel the farthest, to climb the highest, to reach for the stars itself! However, it is said in one particular legend that one man did just that: He reached for the stars, and the stars looked down on the man with such admiration that they fell out of the sky in his presence. It is hard to say what the stars saw in that man, but it was that man that made them kneel. You see, this man was nothing more than a mere hunter. Yeah! Just like your ol' man, hah!"

"Well anyway, that man who made the heavens kneel before him - well, he was no longer just a man now was he? Know what he was, m'boy?"

"The Legendary Marksman! The Legendary Marksman!"

"Hahah! You're right on that count m'boy! See, after that day, that ordinary hunter wasn't so ordinary now was he! He became the best marksman that this world has ever seen! He could shoot an arrow clean through a forest and not hit a single leaf. He could throw a knife across an ocean without touching the water once. Some even say he shot down those same stars! Now wouldn't that be a sight to see, hah! But here is where it gets tricky m'boy, because no-one has seen ol' Doza since the day he became a legend of songs and serenades alike! All we know of him is the whispers on the winds and the shifting in the sands."

"However, what we do know is that those who went in searching for ol' Doza sometimes never returned. Now, you think that's mere misfortune on their part? Perhaps, m'boy, perhaps - but it is said they disappeared for another reason. They say that Doza takes on an apprentice; just imagine it! Being the apprentice to the greatest marksman who ever lived, the legend himself! Hah! Oh, m'boy, there was nothing I wanted more than to be the apprentice of ol' Doza at your age."

"Woah! Father, father! Can I be Doza's apprentice too, please, please?!"

"Hahah! Certainly, m'boy! It has been a long time since anyone who searched for ol' Doza went missing, so perhaps he is just ready to get another little apprentice to take on like you!"

"Yeah! Where is he father? Where is he?"

"Well that's just it m'boy, no one knows anymore. Some say he has gone into hiding, some that he is dead. Some even believe he never existed in the first place! Hah, what do they know! All we know is that when it becomes time, one lucky soul must take up the mantle of The Legendary Marksman's apprentice, and on that day they lose who they were to the pages of history and become who they were born to be. Now, time for sleep - won't be able to find Doza if you're half-asleep tomorrow! Just remember my son: Aim for the stars. Aim for them, and you can become the stuff of legends and be the man you were always born to be - just like Doza."

As of right now this is what I have for Doza. This is a concept that I haven't worked on as much as my other ones, but I will admit I had a lot of fun creating this old guy. I will be back with updates, giving him more character interactions and heck maybe a short story. Either way hopefully you enjoyed reading the concept As mentioned before I always appreciate feedback so feel free to leave it in the comments. I have other concepts too that could use some feed back even if they are old. I will have a link provided below. Well thank you for reading, hopefully you have yourselves a good rest of your day.

BowietheNifty's List of Concepts

Next Champion: The next one will be one that has been on the back shelves for a long time. I feel like she is ready to make her appearance soon.

If I give a review of Doza, will you give a review of my Maut concept?

I like the concept, specially because, aside from Morg, I main off Meta supports. Also, I would love and option other than Trundle and Ashe when my team insists on AP mid, top, and jungle. Though I feel Doza's kit is a little overloaded. I think the q should probably do less damagand you might want to find a different ultimate. I feel you could explore other options that fit his grand Targonian thematic. Maybe even one where you go inside them(think kench mechanic) and they gain a damage buff and their auto attacks both apply and proc his passive.

As it stands, his passive is far too powerful. Why reward a marksman for doing something every other marksman has to do. The 10% would cause the ADC to quickly out scale any champ in the league. Specially in the pro scene. Also, Kalista's passive would have to be heavily taken into consideration with balancing this ability. Lastly, I feel the practice dumbies should not be attackable by your allies. I feel his passive is already powerful enough and should maintain its coordination to use. Also this is counter intuitive and may cause your ADC to attack the wrong target in a life or death situation. Even if only attackable by his opponents, you may cause your opponent's to attack the wrong target, also thematically, it is an insult to the enemy carry, saying they need more practice.

I am not sure how this guy is supposed to fit in? As far as I understand it, you want a champion that plays like a traditional marksman like ashe or caitlyn, but fits the support role spot. Normally the support does not farm for gold and splits XP gained with his carry, A support relies on skills that stun, shields, grant movement speed or any other form of utility that does not need items and thus gold to be effective.
If this guy scales like an ADC and somehow is able to farm as much gold as the main adc, you will have a balancing problem because you effectively end up with two adc, if he does not farm gold he will lack a toolkit that is able to be useful regardless of items.

Honostly I do not think that the bonus to exp will be able to make up for this, also since Doza himself will not be able to gain expierence from his passive and grant expiernce only when at or below the level of doza the adc can never do more than level a level soon than the others. Hopefully you will be able to explain how you think this problem is dealt with.

An idea to somewhat fight this problem, i think, would be to make this guy a high risk high reward type deal. Early game you will lack the support type utility but late game you will have an semi-potent adc extra. Make his passive a partner up type deal (much like kalista`s passive), and that Doza shares a % of the stats of the items his partner buys so that he can still buy support items. If his partner dies or is too far away form Doza the bonus from the passive is lost. And doza is merely a weak adc with lackluster skills and support items. This would force a new type of gameplay where Doza has to stay with his partner and use aggression rather than defensive gameplay to protect his carry.

Okay, I said I'd get this to you and by god I won't let you down.

Starting with the lore, because that needs to be taken into account with all champs: A+

His lore is interesting, and sets up the idea of a legendary marksman searching for an apprentice. It has good detail, and reflects how legends change over time. Don't change a thing here.

On to the abilities: B+

I get the idea behind his kit, and it's an interesting one that hasn't really been explored by many beforehand, so I'll first just take a look at it on its own. I like the idea of an old master type character, and his kit definitely reflects that he's training a successor. Q, no problems with. Don't change that. Next, up, the W. It's an okay move, which in this kit makes sense. E is a bit confusing. What happens if the bottle isn't hit? What if your adc doesn't have the reflexes to hit hte bottle? An okay move. R is pretty cool, no problems there. Overall the kit gets a B+/A

Now, on to the main part of the review: Overall feel. I'm sorry to say it but... just a B here.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of Doza. It's an interesting, unexplored kit. However, it doesn't play to the "legendary marksman" aspect of him. Like, at all. Sure, it's cool to have a champion that's training another champion, but he isn't being legendary, he's just being an old teacher guy. Master Yi (in his old lore. Don't know if this will be retained), needed an apprentice so that Wuju wouldn't die out, but that wasn't his entire character. This guy is less "the legendary marksman" and more "the old master". The name "the legendary marksman" suggests that he's showing the full extent of his skill, that he's actually being an awesome marksman.

Unfortunately, we see the "marksman" in two abilities, and none of the legendary. The training dummies, while interesting, are basically a worse Anivia wall, as it does teh same thing but has a health bar. Used in a lane in which the main person you'll be facing will be building attack speed. Honestly, the ult is the main part of his kit that feels good with this theme, as it's unique and no other champ really offers anything like it.

He's interesting, but he's not a legendary marksman, he's an old master. I guess that's what this boils down to. I give him a B+ overall. You can ignore what I've said, if you want. It's your champ, you can decide what to do with him. I just feel that he doesn't live up to what you present in his lore: An amazing mountain man with legendary marksmanship.

Sorry if I make you feel negative emotions over this. That is not my intention, I just want to provide my honest opinion on your champ. Sorry again.

Hey dude! I'm liking the concept, Doza seems really unique in both kit and lore. Although some number-crunching is probably on it's way for some stuff, the overall feel for his kit is amazing. Having an unusual-yet-damage based support would bring competition to the current meta of MF and Brand supports, plus some others no doubt. Nice work overal; no concepts are perfect first time around, but props to you for sticking by your concept and working through what needed to be worked through. Thats a +1 from me sir, keep on creating!
