A Vel'Koz Passive Update Idea

Let me start this off by saying that Velkoz is one of my favorite champions ever.

He's the first 6300 IP champion I ever bought. He's currently got the highest amount of mastery points on my account. He's got the perfect amount of CC and damage. He's like an early 2011 kit in 2014, and i mean that in a good way. He's been almost perfect balance-wise for a while. He's just awesome.

So when i heard he was getting an update later this year, i was a little skeptical at first. However, with Riot stating what direction they intend to take with him, namely making his thematic (laser-scientist void mage) more distinct i'm sure he'll end up fine. In the meantime, i decided to try my hand at updating Vel'Koz's current passive.

While there's nothing necessarily wrong with Organic Deconstruction atm, i'm mostly going off of what Riot said was one of Vel'Koz's problems,

> Research thematic is not explored very well

I believe there's a fairly simple way of solving that problem;

##As Vel'Koz disintegrates his opponents, he gains more knowledge of them.##

NEW Passive: Void Surveyor

Organic Deconstruction: Vel'Koz's abilities apply a stack of Organic Deconstruction Deconstruction to affected enemies every time they deal damage. At 3 stacks, they consume themselves to deal true damage to their target. Vel'Koz's basic attacks refresh the duration of Organic Deconstruction Deconstruction stacks on his targets and do not count as projectiles.

(NEW) Knowledge Through Disintegration: Vel'Koz learns of his enemies weaknesses through continuous research. Kills or assists on individual champions grant a stack of Knowledge on that enemy, up to 5. At 7 overall stacks, Knowledge stacks become Lamborghini stacks. Each stack grants Vel'Koz a new effect when using abilities on that champion.

  • 1 Stack = Organic Decontruction deals 20% bonus true damage.

  • 2 Stacks = Void Rift deals (.3 AP) as a DOT per second while the affected enemy is under it.

  • 3 Stacks = Plasma Fission slow decay time is increased to 1.25% the original decay.

  • 4 Stacks = E suspension lasts for 1.25 seconds.

  • 5 Stacks = Life Form Disintegration Ray gives Organic Deconstruction stacks on every tick instead of every other tick.

Did you like it? Any suggestions or thoughts? Let me know!

They've already said they've considered this kind of passive before, and they don't like it because it makes him too snowbally.

This is an interesting take. I like the permanent stacking, especially since it's capped, and I like the way he sort of learns their weaknesses and uses it to do more.

I think its really thematic and interesting but I don't like working for my passive. Kinda like how I don't like earning kindred's passive. Either way you should probably disregard my opinion because I'm lazy.

Your idea is a step in the right direction. To clarify, it's possible to have say 5 stacks on one champion but 1 stack on another champion?

I feel like making it scale with activations of Organic Deconstruction would feel a bit better (not really a fan of a snowball ability and this way it emphazises the passive more)

As I understand Riot's current direction on him, they like how he is thematically, as well as the cool stuff Vel'Koz players do on their end (angles and such). They're looking more at making sure he's significantly different from other mages in what he brings to a team. In other words, they want him to do something beyond large quantities of AoE damage, plus light CC and respectable poke. Your idea is pretty great thematically, but that's not really what he needs help with (not just Riot's stance; I completely agree with them on it, as do a lot of Vel'Koz players). They're looking at makin the most heavy changes to his W, given it's the most boring spell on his kit, and honestly, so long as his waveclear and stack application don't take too significant a hit, I don't think I'll mind.

Also, do you even know how ludicrous making his Ult apply deconstruction every tick would be? I know it's the 5-stack buff, but man the damage on that thing ticks so often, nobody would be able to live through that, let alone someone who's died five times :[

Finally, there were some experimental Vel'Koz changes on the PBE way back when (they ended up just adding 30 range to his Ult to make it match the particle better), that lowered his Ult's base damage, super increased its scaling, and made the slow stack on top of itself, intended to help Vel focus in on his specimen of interest. Dunno if they'll take a similar direction this time around, but giving him the rather novel option of focusing down a target from extreme range (not that he can't already do that) could be interesting.

But you know what I like more than materialistic things?...

it seems interesting but it also seems like a differnent take on the cass new passive where instead of poison stacks its his disint stacks and that went horribly but still shows promise in this one

this could work. it would make him hella powerful and warrant a nerf in other places to make his early game a little less powerful, but I could live with it.

This idea is really good if you'd ask me! I always imagined Vel'Koz as someone who learns the organic composition and structures via "disintegration"... Which means killing. Besides, doing it on every single opponent just makes it more interesting.
