Achievements in League
Context So, as a former Xbox fan boy, I love the idea of achievements, they motivate me to become a better player, and encourage success. The general idea I had for these was very similar to the way they worked on Xbox, not really making a difference, just badges of honour. I don't have all the ins-and-outs figured, but will update this if I ever do.
The Gist Basically, each achievement could grant champion mastery, or an amount of IP (based on the incredibility of the feat), or even have their own score, as to make it completely separate from the rest of the game. Achievements would then be split into multiple categories, for example, Champion specific achievements, ranked achievements, role specific achievements, ARAM specific... you get the idea. Achievements would be displayed on your profile under their own tab.
These achievements would not be anything silly, but things like "Reach 90 cs before 10 minutes", so players will be aiming for achievements, and improving their game play at the same time. Also the basic game achievements "Win your first game", "Win your first game as <role>", "Win your 1000th game" all that sort of stuff.
The only bit I have yet to figure out, is how the player would be rewarded for earning each achievement, but I think a "Gamerscore"-like concept is decent, as it causes no real change to gameplay, but grants different amount of gratification based on the feat. Town of Salem did a really good job of creating achievements that don't impact the gameplay, but still encourage players to try new things, and keep them coming back.
Why? I feel this would not only entice achievement hunters to come and play League, but would also give the existing community new things to work towards outside of just being good at the game, achievements would also give new players a general idea of what they need to improve, and break it down into smaller parts. I like the idea of adding ways to congratulate players for their feats, and giving players an added sense of accomplishment.
Let me know what you think, criticize, and let me know if there's anything you want cleared up.
