San'jun, The Voidling Venomancer

Intended Role: Support

Description:

San'jun is a void monster, not dissimilar to a snake. Lacking the strength to overpower his opponents, he instead resorts to poisons. His innate biology and experimentation with his several poisons has led to several uses; to kill, to torture, and to grow missing limbs. Naturally, he prefers the first two. San'jun, however, sometimes gets visions; visions of a world unknown, where bipedal creatures interact with each other, the sky is blue and the world is expanded on, bit by bit. And at the center of these visions is one creature, a creature with no face. A creature that feels maddeningly familiar, who has haunted his mind for five years now. These visions drive him to go Outside, to find this creature and settle the score with him, once and for all. Or sit down to have tea with him.

    "Aargh!"

"Don't get so worked up, darling."

The scene: Two void monsters, one on the ground clutching what was left of its arm and screaming in agony, the other one munching on that limb like a sanctimonious, cocky, entitled son of a sandworm.

"You bastard! I trusted you! I did everything you asked for! This is how you pay me back?"
"Shhhh...you'll wake the children. They're big eaters, and always hungry. Come to think of it, your arm is pretty delicious. Maybe the rest of you might be?"

The disarmed monster looked up at the sacs on the ceiling---at least 20, maybe more---and whispered, "I will make you pay for this."

The pompous monster rolled its many eyes and took another bite out of the arm.

"Mmm-mm. You taste really good, you know that? That said, when I said I knew a way Outside, I wasn't lying. The problem is, I never said I was taking you along. I mean, sure, you're pretty good at following orders, and you're resourceful. But if I take you along, that means I have to share the spoils with you. And honestly, I don't like that. Cause you see, people like us don't get to the top of the food chain by being friends. You were just temporarily useful, and I'll be a little bit sad, but I'm watching out for myself. You should've learned that a long time ago, but I guess now you get to learn the hard way."

It downed the rest of the arm in one bite and swallowed.

"Bye-bye, San'jun. Was nice knowing you. I wish I could stick around to finish you off, but time's ticking. Wake up, children." And he walked out, whistling a tune. Or as close to whistling as you can get from a void monster.

Er. Oops. I got a bit caught up in the tale and forgot to clarify something.

    The disarmed monster was me.

The squalling wails of void children was all around me. That jerk ate my arm off, and without it, I'm just another void monster, and a really weak one on top of that. I'm a venomancer for a reason---when every other monster can beat you in brute force and you're kind of scrawny on top of that, what are you going to do? And if I just sat there, the voidlings would devour me. But there's something you don't know about me. I can grow back missing limbs and skin.

It hurts a lot. Imagine that after you lose a limb, there's a loss of sensations. And when you grow a limb back, it's like being roasted with fire where you used to have a limb, while also having insects eating out your skin in the process. But I can do it. And I did.

And it was just as well that I did, because in the time it took to grow back my arm, I was swarmed by voidlings. Fortunately for me, voidlings aren't immune to poison. I called up a poison cloud. To me, it's no different from breathing air, but these voidlings suffocated and died in seconds. At least they didn't feel that much pain.

In minutes, I was out of the cave and back into the void world. The treacherous monster was nowhere to be seen, and the void is a big place, as you might know. Not that many ways out, and the traitor didn't even have the courtesy to tell me where to go or what to do to get Outside. So with no other option, I had to torture one of the Eyes. You know the type; one big eye and three tentacles, floating around, kind of hard to find. And I respect them a lot, cause they get to go Outside and learn things about the world and experiment, but they also pack a mean punch and hold grudges for a long time if you threaten them. So I got myself in trouble, and even with all that I learned, it took me weeks to finally get Outside.

Outside is a thing I don't understand. I could go on about how different it is from everything else, about the fact that the creatures walking around look so unlike us and talk differently from us, but again, I'm pretty sure you understand what I mean. But the faceless creature, the one that invaded my head for five years, he was Outside. And all my visions told me he was only an hour away, in a large metal structure they call a city. So there I went.

A lot of red and black, and a large bladed weapon they call an axe on everything. That was Noxus for me. And strangely enough, all the creatures I came close to ran from me when I tried to talk to them. It's like they forgot how to talk to people.

So I searched all over for the faceless creature with nothing but my visions to guide me. It was dark with a white light shining from above when I finally found him.

Five years, and you'd think that faceless creature would look imposing. Maybe he'd have two heads and spikes on every limb, or something. But no, he looked just like all the other two-legged creatures. How they tell each other apart, I'll never know. But I went up to talk to him, and the next thing I know, I'm on the floor with rings around my body. The creatures of Outside don't know proper manners at all.

They took me somewhere dark and vaguely smelling of blood. There were a couple of creatures on each side of the faceless creature, all dressed in black and with blue light coming out of their hands. And this is what the faceless creature has to say to me.

    "Ronan, can you understand me?"
"...What? I'm not Ronan, I'm San'jun. And who are you anyway?"
"Oh god, he doesn't remember...Listen, Ronan, I'm your father."
"Father? What's that supposed to mean to me?"

But as I said the words, the faceless creature wasn't faceless anymore. He had wrinkles on his face, with grey hair on the sides of his head, and his eyes were a bit sunken. And water was coming out of his eyes.

He went on to tell me about how I had an interest in medicine, that he was experimenting on Void creatures, that I decided to study a dead corpse and something inside that corpse turned me into the thing I am now, that I killed some people and disappeared. And a whole lot of other stuff that didn't mean anything to me. It felt like I was supposed to feel bad, that maybe I should hug my so-called father, tell him that everything was okay and that I'd be a good Void monster while he told me that there were ways to turn me back to normal. I might have gone along with it, if only to see what being an Outside creature is like, but since all my memories are from the void, I'm understandably skeptical. But I might have gone through with it.

But it wouldn't have mattered because the next second, you came in, killed the black cloak creatures and put a gaping hole into the chest of the grey-haired creature, and then skittered off. That was a stupid thing to do when you knew how important that creature was to me. I guess I should've expected that from the monster that double-crossed me, though I'm really confused as to why you didn't just kill me when you had the chance. He was bleeding all over the floor, and while I was still a bit skeptical about whether this creature was my 'father', I figured that I at least owed him something.

So I mixed the same poison that I use to grow back missing limbs and spread it all over his wound. Until now, I've never heard an Outside creature scream so loudly. It's really kind of grating, like it's hurting me on a mental level. And the screaming summoned more black-cloaked creatures. And while I'm not the kind to hold a grudge, I really did not want to die here. So I fought them, and won. And I left the grey-haired creature screaming on the ground. I can't get it out of my head even now. I don't even know if he lived or died.

That's what you did to me. You screwed me when you knew I wanted, no, needed to go Outside and get these damn visions out of my head. You had me devour the people that were loyal to me, while you sat on your haunches and pretended to care when I was having doubts. You forced me to torture an Eye when you knew that was my last-resort option. You put the life of the grey-haired creature on my conscience. And you ate my frigging arm! Come on! You just don't do that!

But I found you. It only took a month---you really know how to disappear when you don't want to be found, you know that?---but I found you. And I never thought I'd enjoy a reversal of circumstances so much; you, on the ground, missing your arms. And me, standing over you, tearing the meat off your bones. Man, if I was a cook, I could probably make an entire menu off of your body; that's how good you taste right now.

But even though you're a two-faced, lying, traitorous son of a sandworm, you were right about two things. This entire experience has taught me that the one person I should be looking out for is myself. And that it's a monster-eat-monster world, where everyone is looking out for themselves.

A monster-eat-monster world, huh? Guess it's time for me to be the bigger monster, then. Starting with you.
