We all love puns, and we need more ways to talk about them. Like any good denizen of the internet I decided to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT and went to putting thoughts on paper. The result is "A Puntitled Framework for Evaluating the Quality of Puns."

If there is any community in the world that could possibly appreciate this framework about Puns, it is the League of Legends community.

I need to know what Phreak thinks. Also, every caster should consider using this to up their games and try to put a dent in Phreak's punbelievable verbal domination. I would genuinely appreciate any help from the community and the fine folks at riot to spread the word and offer critique.

Puns will save the world.

An excerpt...

Let me set the tone by spitting a blunt truth. People who enjoy puns are better than people who don’t… and yet, like someone buying food at an airport, puns tend to get a bad rap (1-D, 1º, L1: lateral manipulation, slant reference).

The reason puns are so misunderstood is because they lack the key to any good joke: a clearly defined toolset that allows audiences to meaningfully scrutinize them with rigorous objective analysis. This changes now.

Below you will find a framework for pun evaluation. It consists of three core concepts:

  • Dimensionality (D), reflecting the complexity of a pun.
  • Degree (º), measuring the number of isolated components of a pun.
  • Level (L), expressing the number of linguistic facets used to represent all angles of a pun.
