Thavius the Demacian Illusionist

The Concept

Idea: An AD Assassin/AP Mage that specializes in outmaneuvering enemies through his magical abilities. This masked champion fights primarily with his sword, though he uses his abilities to outplay his adversaries.

Bio: None would suspect a blind lord to be the masked vigilante mage that seeks justice during Demacia’s night hours. And yet, this is exactly what Lord Thavius does. Having the magical sense to see and contort reality, he works secretly to free mages and smuggle them out of Demacia. However, with the event of Sylas’ Rebellion, Lord Thavius now faces the difficulty of supporting an insurrection that could lead to the countless deaths of mages. Able to conceal his own magical essence from Sylas, none have suspected he is one of Demacia’s most powerful practicers of magic. Yet Thavius is unsure of his position. Will he side with the rulers of Demacia for fear that an uprising will lead to Gallio’s resurrection? Or will he stand a proud mage amongst his brothers and sisters? Only time can tell.

Abilities

Passive: Determine Reality: Items Thavius buys will directly influence his final passive ability. Once Thavius reaches a certain amount of AD/AP, he will have the option of choosing one of the following:

For Their Protection: If Thavius reaches his AD threshold, a prompt will appear that allows him to channel and change his passive. This new passive exchanges the cane he carries in one hand for another sword, increasing his attack speed and giving him a cooldown rate for all abilities.

For Their Freedom: If Thavius reaches his AP threshold, he will cast his mask off and create a magical glass barrier around his body. This adaptive shielding will scale with AP and it’s cooldown is reduced by the casting of abilities. Once the glass barrier is broken it will regenerate when out of enemy vision.

Q: Mirror Surge: Thavius instantly dashes forward with his sword in a straight line. Thavius passes through any enemies hit along the way, and each enemy hit takes an adaptive amount of AD and AP damage. This ability can go through Illusionist’s Doorway. If this ability is cast while Shard of the Reflective is active, Thavius will break out of the shard in a straight lined skillshot. Doing so reduces the cooldown of Illustionist’s Doorway.

W: Illusionist’s Doorway: Thavius places two parallel mirror panes down that are a small proximity apart. Only the outlines of these panes can be seen by enemies. These panes remain in place for an adaptive amount of time. Any ally, enemy, or projectile that enters a pane facing away from the opposite pane will appear exiting the opposite pane on the side facing away from the original pane entered. However, any ally, enemy, or projectile that enters a pane facing toward the opposite pane will simply pass through that pane. Any abilities that orient a champion to leap onto their target can be canceled by panes. The attacking champion will carry out their attack up until they hit the pane, by which point they are transported accordingly.

E:
Shard of the Reflective: Thavius casts a mirror shard in a straight line. If the shard hits an enemy, it breaks, dealing adaptive magic damage and stunning the enemy for an adaptive amount of time. Thavius can recast the ability until Shard of Illusion reaches the end of it’s range. If Thavius does so, the shard’s skill shot line faces toward the direction it was cast and ends where the original skill shot ended. The shard then blinks to it’s appropriate place along the skill shot line.

R: Nexus of Mirage: Thavius places two wide parallel mirror panes down that are a large distance apart. Only the outlines of these panes can be seen by enemies. These panes remain in place for an adaptive amount of time. Any ally, enemy, or projectile that enters a pane facing toward the opposite pane will appear exiting the opposite pane on the side facing toward the original pane entered. However, any ally, enemy, or projectile that enters a pane facing away the opposite pane will simply pass through that pane. Any abilities that orient a champion to leap onto their target can be carried through the panes.

First of all, I love his thematic, both in terms of lore and the magic he uses.

Second, his w, e, and r are all worded in a really confusing manner. I think I figured out what his w and r do but I'm completely lost on how his e works. Also, what do you mean by enemies only seeing the outlines of the panels?

Third, he's supposed to be a damage dealer but only two of his abilities actually deal damage. I'd suggest reworking his ult to something that helps him do his job since right now it's a really powerful form of team utility on a champion who shouldn't have something like that while also seeming ridiculously exploitable (just going to mention blitzcrank for now).

Fourth, I'd suggest making his w not effect allied champions other than himself and their projectiles due to the potential to accidentally or intentionally screw over allies.

Fifth, the way his choice currently works, he chooses ad itemization and more damage and cdr or ap itemization and a regenerating shield since all his abilities scale the same either way (including things like stun duration and portal duration where scaling doesn't even make sense). If this is what you intended then great but I think it might work better if ap and ad benefited different aspects of his kit. Damage could stay adaptive but, for example, you could have his stun scale with ap and his q gain a lower cooldown for building ad.

Sixth, a new ult might help but in general the two paths seem unbalanced with ad maybe being able to work and ap just not having the tools to do much of anything. Also, the path of protecting mages augmenting his damage and the path of rebellion augmenting his durability seems a bit weird.

My suggestion would be a universal passive involving adaptive damage applied via autos since his q already wants to put him in melee range and then let him stack up a bar by attacking once he's chosen a path. Filling it completely would give a different buff based on his chosen path. I'd suggest temporary attack speed for ad and a period during which cooldowns refresh faster for ap as a starting point.

Another possibility would be to replace the bar with the regenerating shield and then give each path a different buff when it breaks.

The other differences between paths could be provided by scalings or something similar to what Kayn has.

Regarding the thematic I'd have him be an APMage in regards to gameplay but lorewise I would have him be an excellent Illusionist/Street wizard with no magic but rather being a simple human. I love the mirror thematic since we don't yet have that in Runeterra! His Q reminda me of Pykes E.
