Good morning, fellow League players and enthusists. I made a similar post not too long ago about custom items, and if you saw that you may see (a) duplicate. However, that post was about itemization in general while this one is specifically about mage items. The reason I'm being so specific this time is simple. The mage update is about to roll out and so I've been trying out the handful of mages I own and pondering the meaning of magic. The following items are the results of my enthusiastic foray into the arcane, each attempts to fulfill one or more specific weaknesses in the mage class without patching the flaws that are considered core to mages in general.
In the case that you saw my other post, and liked my art, I apologize. I have not had the time to make any art for these. And all the build paths are in flux this time. (Build paths actually took second longest for my other items, after art.)
ITEMS:
Bauble of the Archmage: +250 mana Unique Passive: +5% CDR Unique Passive: After 5 seconds without casting a spell, you gain 120% mana regen until you cast another spell or are damaged by a spell. Build: Sapphire Crystal(350) + (150) = 500 gold Notes: Basically, this is a new starting item for mages. I also have a sort of 'mana warmogs' coming up that is similar to this item. However Bauble of the Archmage has a very specific purpose, breaking mages' dependency on Morellonomicon.
Orb of the Oracle: +50 AP +300 Mana +20% CDR +10% Movespeed Unique Passive: +300 vision range Build: Sapphire Crystal(350) + Amplifying Tome(435) + Aether Wisp(850) + (265) = 1900 gold Notes: This is a supportive CDR AP item for non-tank AP supports that helps them keep pace in teamfights by having vision, cdr, mana, and speed. However, it is not necessarily efficient on AP mages due to the low AP. (But possible, just not a good late-game item.)
Emberstave: +500 HP +40 AP +20% CDR Unique Passive: Every third spellcast causes a burst of damage to emanate from your champion, dealing 65(+20% AP)(+20% ability damage) magic damage in an AOE. If the spellcast that triggered this passive was a movement spell, the burst is buffered until the end of the movement. This passive is applicable once every 3 seconds. Build: Bami's Cinder(1100) + Kindlegem(800) + Blasting Wand(850) + (450) = 3200 gold. Notes: This item is an AP tank's dreams and aspirations. With 500 health, 40 AP, and 20% CDR it has good tank stats, and the passive is excellent for melee range spell casters. Note that some champions would be really strong with it due to gap closers, such as Sejuani, Amumu, and maybe even Ahri and Elise. Others, such as Ryze and Annie, could be good with it due to their high close-range burst. I don't think this is a bad idea because if you compare it to other tank/damage items, there are loads of AD tank items that scale just about as well. Especially with it's recent nerf Titanic Hydra is the comparable AD tank item.
Breastplate of the Archmage: +300 mana +40 AP +30 magic resist +15% CDR Unique Passive: after 5 seconds not casting any spells, you gain 200% mana regen and gain back an additional 2% of your mana pool every second until you cast a spell or are dealt spell damage. Build: Chalice of Harmony(1000) + Bauble of the Archmage(500) + Blasting Wand(850) + (550) = 2900 gold Notes: At first I was going to make this a super-high mana item with a mana regen warmog's-esque passive, and then I realized that pretty much only Ryze would use it. Most mages want AP. Note also that I used Bauble of the Archmage in the buildpath, and starting items generally don't build into other items, as they are intended to be gold efficient without ruining the early game. (I suddenly had a strange idea: what if Guinsoo's Rageblade was an early attack-speed item? Its stats would have to be reduced dramatically, but we all want that anyway.) In either case, as for this item, I'm not too worried. There are numerous ways to make it work.
Tome of Madness: +100 AP +30% CDR Unique Passive: Abilities expend a stack of "Mania" to burn affected targets for 40[+(single-target: 20%, multi-target: 10%) AP] magic damage over 5 seconds. Holds 3 stacks of "Mania", cooldown per stack = 20 seconds. "Mania" will refresh on a single target, but will not stack damage. Build: Amplifying Tome(435) + Amplifying Tome(435) + Amplifying Tome(435) + Needlessly Large Rod(1250) + (445) = 3000 gold Notes: Yes, it's insane. And yes, you lose AP on it. But that's the price. This would literally be the cheapest 100 AP item and the CDR is ridiculous. That said, this one is honestly more for fun than any semblance of realism I try to lend to my ideas. But I don't think it's the worst idea either.
Guardian's Might: +250 HP +28 AP //The extra AP is accounted for with the passive. It actually becomes stat efficient. +20 Armor +20 Magic Resist Unique Passive: Gain 1 AP for every 3 bonus Armor and 1 AP for every 5 bonus MR. Unique Passive: Convert 25% of all true damage to magic damage and 25% into physical damage. Build: Blasting Wand(850) + Ruby Crystal(400) + Cloth Armor(300) + Null-magic Mantle(450) + (800) = 2800 gold Notes: This item is designed for AP tanks explicitly. That is why it scales with armor and MR, because few burst mages will be able to abuse that, and those that can will still be forced into awkward item builds. In other words, it could be fun, but nothing crazy.
Sabre Devoid: +70 AP +100% mana regen Unique Passive: Auto attacks and on-hit ignore 15% of the enemies MR. Unique Passive: Killing a neutral monster or minion with an auto-attack grants 1 AP stacking up to 20 times. Build: Blasting Wand(850) + Frostfang(850) + Amplifying Tome(435) + (465) = 2600 gold Notes: This is more for AP assassins with some on-hit. I'm thinking Akali and Katarina. I purposely made sure only on-hit ignored the MR so that Teemo couldn't completely abuse it, but... he still would.
Spear of the Lost Cause: +30 AP +250 mana +5% movespeed +5% CDR +10 magic pen +25% attack speed Unique Passive: gain 1 maximum mana on unit kill. Gain 1 more for monsters, cannon minions, and super minions. Gain 15 more on assists. Gain 20 more on kills. Build: Aether Wisp(850) + Sapphire Crystal(350) + Recurve Bow(1000) + (250) = 2450 gold Notes: This item is designed to be rather poor at a lot of things. :) It's a lost cause. But seriously, it could be useful, even if it really is more just an extra, much cheaper, Infinity Edge with a vastly different passive. (And no AD.) The reason it could be useful is that it lends a lot of stats that mages don't usually have time or space to itemize for while benefiting them in the long run with bonus mana. Although I am sort of afraid it would turn Ryze into a mini-Veigar. (Wow. That was a strange idea. A mini-Veigar...)
And that is all for now. As always, comments and critique are invited.
