Ivelo, The Crystal Vagabond

Lore

Ivelo only had a few things going for him when he was younger. Aside from a good friend who always found himself at Ivelo's side, he led a very simple life. Growing up in Ionia, Ivelo learned of a peaceful existence, but living on such a small island nation made him more curious than ever before. What kinds of things lie beyond the oceans he wanted so dearly to cross? Were there places he would see that nobody else had ever documented? These answers eventually came, for once he reached adulthood, he took his friend and decided to explore. They found refuge in Bilgewater, and had fun in drinking games with pirates. They braved icy tundras in hopes of finding new creatures, only to find that sickness was not what they enjoyed too much. They played with Yordles in Bandle City, and met with many people from Piltover and Demacia, learning of all sorts of new technology that they would use in their later adventures. Noxus even proved to be more hospitable than normal for the two lonely vagabonds, as they learned how black magics could be useful in daily life, without being truly used for dark purposes they were designed for. Around this time, the had learned many things, and had grown closer than ever before. Ivelo only truly had a few other places to discover. The first was Mount Targon, a place so dangerous, only a pair of curious minds (or crazy ones) would dare try to climb the summit, and Shurima, a place that seemed all too mysterious to pass up. Of course, back then, Ivelo didn't realize that they would never get to the second one. It was on their adventure on Mount Targon that it happened. Legend from the locals had told of a rare gem, containing the ability to resurrect others, rest at some place deep in the caverns of the monuments, and Ivelo knew just what he wanted his adventure to be. After a few days of searching, Ivelo finally found a promising cave in the side of a southern mount, and in just a few hours, the duo had come across something extraordinary. In the center of a large room were pillars surrounding a massive crystal. It was bigger than Ivelo was, and it seemed to whisper things from a language no longer in use today. After what seemed like hours of trying to move the crystal from its' place, the two deiced to try one last thing. Using some tech they had left over from their travels, they tried to blow it out of socket. But what a stupid idea it was, as once the caverns shook with explosive power, a collapse of the rocks above sent a large boulder on top of Ivelo's dearest friend. Many a tear did Ivelo shed, before trying his luck with the crystal that caused all this. In the end, a glow appeared and his friend's voice rang through the mountain, but not from his body. His soul was now locked in the crystal, and it began to float about near Ivelo as his friend spoke to him more. It told of the power sealed within the crystal, and that he was now able to live within it, even if it meant never truly seeing Ivelo again. With the sick, black magic giving the friends a second chance to travel together, Ivelo took the crystal and called for it, having his long gone friend control it for him as he tied it to his own soul, so that they would never part again.

Abilities

P- Spirit Eye Ivelo is followed by a powerful Crystal. While he starts the game with a lower vision range than usual, Ivelo can also see into brush and past walls in the fog of war. As Ivelo levels up, his sight range increases, eventually becoming slightly larger than normal sight range. At max level, Ivelo's sight range is largest. Once he gains such power, enemies will be able to see the range of his vision as well as allies, and all are given warning when entering his domain.

Q- Return/Crystalline Pierce In ranged form, Ivelo dashes to his Crystal, dealing damage upon arrival and instantly becoming melee. This can't be used if too far away from a target. In melee form, Ivelo uses his Crystal on his hands to deal damage to enemies in a short line in front of him. The range is based on his rank in Throw/Congeal.

Ranged form can dash to a Shard as well, having the same effect but pulling the other shards in a bit later. These Shards deal the same damage to enemies in the path they travel towards Ivelo.

W- Empowered Shard/Crystalline Fists Ivelo enhances his basic attacks.

In ranged form, he gains even more range and deals bonus magic damage on the next hit as he throws a piece of his Crystal at an enemy unit. This Shard only lasts 4 seconds while it's imbedded into the target, but acts just like the others.
Moving a shard with Splinter will damage this target first.
In melee form, he gains bonus attack speed and a smaller amount of magic damage on hit for 3 seconds. Basic attacks against champions keep this bonus up for an extra 1 second.

E- Splinter/Crush In ranged form, Ivelo splits his Crystal into three Shards before sending them in a cone, dealing damage to all enemies hit by them. If the Crystal is already split, the Shards will be sent in lines until they meet in a line perpendicular to the start position. In melee form, Ivelo picks up his Crystal and slams the ground in a nearby location, dealing damage and briefly knocking up enemies in the center for. Ivelo gains a shield based on how many champions he hit for 2.5 seconds.

R- Throw/Congeal Ivelo changes between ranged and melee forms. When turning ranged, he throws his Crystal, knocking aside all enemy units, but stopping on the first champion hit, which will be very briefly knocked back. When changing to melee, he pulls his Crystal towards him, dealing damage to all units hit on the way. If he happens to move too far away from the Crystal or the Shards, they will return to him without dealing damage.

If his Crystal is split into Shards at the time, all of them will collect, damaging all units in each path, but only dealing damage once. Walking over his Crystal or Shards will collect it, but will not change him to melee form from ranged.

While in ranged form, he gains bonus movement speed, and when melee, he gains bonus armor and magic resistance.

Play Style

Overall- Going against anyone with Ivelo should have constant trades and duels. Ivelo makes short work of this by automatically starting the game with a point in his ultimate, giving him a hand at level 1 trades. While he stays susceptible to ganks thanks to his lower sight range, he makes up for it by being able to trade evenly or favorably early and mid game, while using his late game power to butcher and beat down single targets he catches off guard with Spirit Eye. His mix of physical and magic damage makes him formidably tough to build against, but not impossible, not to mention he mostly has his damage in scaling, not bases. Building off tank helps him out a bit too, and his patterns of striking, smashing, shielding and repeating means he'll invest in mana items as well as normal damage items.

Top Lane- Building like a fighter in this lane, Ivelo works well by dealing damage from initiating with Empowered Shard, then going in and using Crush to hit them hard while getting a shield. Activate Cyrstalline Pierce to get some extra damage while in melee form, then use Throw to knock them back a bit before going into a ranged form and allowing yourself to use basic attacks to finish off the damage. If you start in melee, don't be afraid to throw your crystal whole or in shards, and be sure to punish your lane opponent when they get to close to them. Return plus Splinter will help you get out of tough spots, or even over walls if you have to mana, and using Splinter on your opponent gives you three spots to dash in on should you want to catch them off guard. With solid wave clearing potential and a series of crowd control, he makes for a strong duelist and split pusher.

Mid Lane- Just as before, but a bit more specialized. Since assassins or mages live here, it may be better to retailate instead of initiate. As soon as one of them wants to initiate, don't hesitate. Jump on in with Splinter and Return, then Crush to break them in. Keep up with them while applying basic attacks to get in some extra damage, before backing up using Throw to stop them in their tracks while getting to a safe distance to use Splinter or Empowered Shard. Just remember that his kit only has so much chasing potential, and while his shield helps him survive a bit, it doesn't make up for his lack of sustain against such opponents that do.

Jungling- If you mix in your abilities, jungling shouldn’t be too difficult. Use Splinter and Crush to hit multiple targets in a camp, while stopping them from attacking by knocking them up and around. When ganking, start with Empowered Shard to lock on, then use Return to get in close before knocking the target high with a well aimed Crush. Use the shield to dive a tower if you have to, but be sure to get out before your naturally squishy build gives you away, and be sure to save your combos to help your allies take aim and help you out. Your crowd control isn't the strongest, but when times right, it can lead to a kill just as easily as other champions.

Team Fights- In a team fight, use Spirit Eye to find enemies off guard, and use your jumps and crowd control to take them on from over a wall. Fighting a single target should be no problem, while taking on two enemies might prove that you'll need to back off, but more than likely survive. Keep an eye on how many times you use your spells however, as you may find that his low mana pool will leave him dry of casting, and he'll be wide open for an attack. Also keep in mind that his abilities aren't designed for team fights. While he might strive well for a bit, he isn't meant to stay in a fight with multiple people for a long period of time. A shield is fine and all for staying alive, but timing it along with ally help and crowd control will be key.

Build Paths- A combination of items can be used, consisting of mana pool expanding items, defensive damage items, and a mixture of ability power and attack damage. A core item on him should be Hextech Gunblade, giving him the extra sustain he'll need in order to keep him going. Add in a combination of cooldown reduction and mana from Iceborn Gauntlet, and maybe an actual damage item, like Stattik Shiv or Phantom Dancer, and you'll be able to hit people relatively hard while hopefully keeping yourself up a bit. Spirit Visage keeps you alive longer while something along the lines of Sunfire Cape will help you deal a bit more consistent damage. Abyssal Scepter and Maw of Malmortius help when against magic damage dealing folk, and Ninja Tabi or Randuins let you duel marksman or assassins without the risk of dying almost instantly. If you go for a more damage oriented build, don't be afraid to grab either a Rylais Crystal Scepter to keep them on to you, or an Infinity Edge if you feel like hitting a bit harder with those fast magic dealing attacks, just to help them out. Since his abilites have high scaling, but lower than normal bases with moderate cooldowns, a mixture of both attack damage and ability power is easily possible, although it's use and change are heavily based on who you're up against. And don't forget; a Sheen item, like Lich Bane or Trinity Force, make good use, since he mixes attacks in with his abilites very well, while also giving him more mana to use just in case you spam a bit more than you'd want to.

Final Thoughts

A combo based, mana hungry, thought provoking champion I've spent quite a bit of time developing. While a bit complicated at first, it can't be too much harder than it is to play Ekko or Azir, and the animations would be pretty fantastic to see happen. My initial imagination for this character was someone who beat up his enemies with a massive crystal, but it didn't work out as planned the first time. In fact, the first iteration had Ivelo trapping his enemies within the crystal before throwing them to his team. Since it really just happened to be a really strong Blitzcrank grab, I worked on a way for him to catch enemies off guard, without being able to force them off guard. In the end, I settled on a passive that would give him, and his team, the ability to help do this, and provided a wonderful new meaning to vision control. The crystal itself became more and more complex as I worked on it, and at first, I was hesitant to allow it to break up into pieces. But then, I came up with Splinter, and the whole thing burst open with opportunities. Soon, I was finding elegant, yet strong and firm styles of throwing, swinging, and smashing his crystal around, like with the way he covers his hands it it for melee, and how he throws a piece of it while ranged. It was a lot of fun to make this champion, and I really hope you guys liked it as much as I did. Let me know what you think!
