Chapion Selection queue time reduction idea
First, I'll say that I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this kind of message, but did not see a better place in the links or other boards.
Basically, while I personally enjoy the new champ selection process, it does tend to cause a lot of very long wait times (which aren't reported as long, since the time in champ select does not get added to your wait time). In particular, there is an issue that it may take several minutes before a person fails to lock in a champion. If this happens a few times in a row, it can cause upwards of 30 minutes of unaccounted for queue time. This causes quite a bit of frustration for players, and it appears to be happening frequently (based on personal experience and salt-aided chat).
Fortunately, I think there's a (hopefully) straightforward solution to be found in solo-queue users. Basically, if someone drops during selection, instead of throwing everyone back to queue, if a suitable replacement can be found (proper role and within some percentage of the dropped player), just substitute the player and reset the clock for them. This would result in an additional 30 seconds wait and use of all the prior time in selection, instead of restarting the process. It would also reduce the wait time for the 'substitute' player, as potentially several minutes of selection time has been bypassed. There could be side-effects if this was attempted in Ranked, though with the loss penalty I cannot imagine it being as large an issue in the Ranked queue anyway. Finally, if some players do not like the idea, either a flag on the role selection or limiting it to Fill should be able to allow for opting in or out.
I'm not sure how badly it would mangle the current team selection algorithms (e.g., yanking potential players out), but I assume it could be handled similarly to a user canceling while in queue for one side, and the rest of the champ select is pretty new, so bitrot shouldn't have set in yet there.
Anyway, just something that I was thinking about when I got booted into queue a few times earlier so thought I'd squeak about.
Thanks!
