Lore
In the long history of the town of Weisstadt, there has only ever been one attempt at conquest by a foreign power. In previous generations, foreign powers had always been diverted from the wealthy city by subterfuge and deceit, as they prepared to march on the swamps and hills around the city, they would find a rival challenging them, or numerous supply troubles or untimely deaths would dissuade them. However, under the governance of the ineffectual Gottfried Von Gasspian, the Demacian's latest campaign was not halted before they began to march, and far to quickly they were at the Rainart's Crossing, the western most border of Weisstadt's territory.
The Demacians had long held the Gasspian in contempt. At least noxus was open about its vile nature, the Gasspians would speak of honor and duty to you while breaking bread with your greatest enemy. As the first step of a greater campaign on Noxus, they planned to remove the fair weather city state and pave their way east.
As Gottfried began to panic, his younger brother, Gunther quietly gathered what troops he could and set up position on the small island the helped bridge the great river the formed Weisstadt's Western border. As the sun rose on what would become known as the Massacre of Rainart's Crossing, Gunther stood down the Demacian army with but a scant forty men, just enough to span the bridge on the eastern side of the island.
The Demacian forces scoffed at the pitiful Gasspian defense and began to march their way across the island.
Unbeknownst to them, Gunther had had the entire island seeped in one of the most deadly brews the Gasspian family had ever concocted. A devious creation that afflicted through its fumes and took hold gradually. As his foes crowded the island, Gunther and his small force fought like wild beasts, and no matter how hard the Demacian's fought, they could not gain an inch of the bridge.
As the sun set, the effects of the poison became apparent. Soldiers' skin began to purple, painful welts began to appear on their skin, and blood began to seep from every opening on their body. By the time the sun rose the next day, the Demacian force was decimated, large swaths of their force lay dead in pools of blood.
Those lucky few who never made it to the island could only look in horror at the scene before them, and promptly fled back to Demacia with tales of the man beast of Weisstadt, whose breath could melt flesh, and whose gaze made foes freeze in terror. The crossing had been held, and Gunther's legacy as the Basilisk had been born.
"A Gasspian does not brag, or preen, we do not lord ourselves over our foes. We may grant the day to our enemy with a tip of the hat for their valor. However, despite all that, the one thing a Gasspian does not do above all others: We never lose."

Role:
Gunther's role on the battlefield is as a tanky support. His abilities allow him to manipulate how his opponents move about the battlefield. He is particularly skilled at defending choke points, splitting enemy teams or allowing his team to safely retreat.
His Legacy of the Crossing is particularly important to his game plan. It is deceptively weak at first, but remaining in its area for too long will begin to do lasting harm to any unprepared enemies. By forcing the enemy to fight in its area, Gunther's team can swing fights in their favor. However, if he is forced to fight outside this area, the damage he can bring to the team is limited and at very close range.
