Chapter 1
Diana stood under the glow of the night's moon amongst the ectoplasmic remains of seven spectral wraiths, but her battle was just more than half way done. Five more of her enemy wisped through the air before her. Normally, she would lure them to her and released a pale cascade of lunar magic to weaken and destroy such enemies, but she was not their target.
The spectral wraiths ripped through the flesh of the lunar wolf she had come to protect. While she was able to swing her crescent blade through those that attacked its lower body, the wolf's towering height put the wraiths attacking its head slightly out of her reach. Nor did it help that the beast she was out to protect had decided that she was a far easier target to lash out at than the speeding wraiths clawing at it.
Diana dodged to her left to avoid the claw coming down from above to try to crush her, bracing herself as the rubble spewing forth from the ground slammed into her Lunari armor. Before the beast could regain its balance and attack again, she quickly kicked off a nearby tree and allowed the lunar power within her to surge her forward placing her a small distance behind it. The beast tried to bite down on the wraiths attacking his face, but wasn't fast enough to catch any in its jaws. As it turned to lash out again at the much slower being in its presence, Diana sunk her blade into the ground and with an enchantment, released a small gravitational pusle, knocking the lunar wolf off balance and dragging the nearby spectral wraiths down towards her. Quickly, she tore her blade from the ground, leapt into the air, and swung it through two more of the wraiths before the rest regained control of their flight and fled from her. Just as quickly as they escaped her reach, the lunar wolf regained its composure and snarled as it reared back to attack her again.
Diana braced herself on both legs, waiting to see which limb she would be attacked with. As soon she saw the claws coming at her from the left, she immediately dashed to the right to avoid being flung across the landscape. She put some distance between herself and the beast and tried to analyze the situation. Three more of the wraiths remained, but the lunar wolf would not let her eliminate them so easily. Before she could best determine how to finish off her enemies without hurting the wolf, a glowing flask flew through the air before her. It landed a distance to her right and began leaking a potent magical mist. The wraiths in the air suddenly changed course and raced towards the flask intent on feeding from the energy flowing from it.
With the wraiths no longer clawing at him, the lunar wolf started to charge forward, ready to release its wrath on anything it could get its claws or fangs into. Diana, too, charged forward to finish off the distracted wraiths now easily in her reach. Fortunately, her smaller body allowed her to change momentum and reach her victims before the wolf could reach its. With three quick swings of her blade, the remaining wraiths fell apart into an ectoplasmic mess on the ground. Then before the wolf could pounce upon her, she raced quickly under it, providing it no chance to attack or turn quickly enough to stop her from gaining distance from him once again.
"Wow, that fella is angry," spoke a voice from the direction from which the flask had been hurled. Diana turned her head to spot a man standing beside a tree watching her fight. He was clothed in white, black, and gray garments that provided a number of pouches and pockets. Tied to his back was something shaped like a small circular shield wrapped in white cloth. With a sly smile, he asked her, "Want to try a stranger's crazy idea?"
"I'm open to suggestions," she replied looking back at the furious beast.
"Then follow me," said the stranger and he jumped out of the treeline and started racing the opposite direction of the lunar wolf.
"What's your plan," Diana asked as she followed him.
"Have you ever seen a bull fight," the stranger asked as he lead them on a zig zagged path rendering the wolf incapable of using its longer leg stride to catch up so simply.
"I have."
"I'm thinking something along the same theory, but instead of a red cape, I think we're better off using a flash of light."
"So you want to try losing him in a flash of light? That will only stop him for a few seconds before he recovers and comes at us even more pissed off."
"That by itself, yes, but I'm thinking more in line with a combination of something else. Have you ever been really furious, and then started to eat, and eating calmed you down? If you mix the bull fighting theory and the food calming theory together, you come up with a crazy plan that just might work," the stranger explained as he pointed to a pair of deer in the distance.
Diana quickly pieced together the stranger's plan and started to let the lunar energy within her circulate as they closed in on the location of the deer. As the deer turned to look at those running at them, she release a small burst of pale light to blind and freeze them in place. Then as the lunar wolf closed in behind them, she released all the energy built up inside her in a blinding flash as she and the stranger leapt over the deer and the wolf's fangs came baring down behind them. The stranger and she quickly took cover before the wolf's eyesight returned. As they peered out, they saw the wolf violently thrashing about one of the deer caught in its jaw, crushing bones with its teeth and slamming its prey into the ground with sharp twists of its neck. As the animal in its grasp grew motionless, the lunar wolf finally seemed to clam down. It dropped the mutilated deer into a heap on the ground and looked up towards the moon in the night sky. With a loud piercing howl, it let out the last of its frustration. After a short pause, it walked off to find a safe spot to nurse its wounds.
"Well, that was exciting," the stranger said with a smile on his face.
"Who are you," asked Diana.
"The name is Astriel. And might I presume you to be the lovely Lunari known as Diana?"
"I am. Were you looking for me?"
"Yes, I have a bit of an unusual favor to ask."
"What do you want?"
"I was hoping you could guide me to the Lunari temple."
"That's one hell of a huge favor you're asking," Diana replied as her eyes narrowed, "First of all, the temple is a highly sacred place and I have absolutely no idea who you are or if I can trust you. Second, that temple is located high up on Mount Targon. The chances of you dying during the climb are far greater than the chances of you reaching it."
"I had a feeling you would say something like that. After all, that's the most logical reponse to my request. But might I propose a trial to test me. One that would both test my loyalty and my strength. I know you can't completely trust me with one test, but if you made it something at least worth the effort of guiding me up Mount Targon, then at least it was worth it. And even if I pass the test, but die on the climb, I possess a number of interesting things on my person. You can have anything you want from my possessions if I pass on."
"What kind of trial?"
"Anything you deem worthy of helping guide me to the Lunari temple."
"Why do you even want to go to the temple?"
"The truth is, I was born with a small deformity. I have twice the normal amount of light sensitive photoreceptors in my eyes. It grants me excellent night vision, but daylight is so blinding to me that I can't easily walk about while the sun is up. Consequently, I've been forced to adopt a nocturnal lifestyle. Since I've always spent my time outside during the night, I've come to love the night far more than the day. The sun may be what brightens the day of normal people, but it's the moon that brings beauty into my own life. Myths and tales about the Lunari had always interested me. But one such tale specifically got my attention. They say when a warrior is blessed by the moon, their body is changed to a state that leaves them in the best possible shape to fight for the ways of the Lunari. With the legends also saying that the eyes of a Lunari glow, I figured that the eyes must be one of those things that improve to prepare them for life as a warrior. I always dreamed of becoming a Lunari as a child and gaining the sight that would allow me to walk around in the day without having to wear something to shield my eyes from the blinding light of the sun. But it was only a dream. That is until I learned that an actual Lunari had risen. That you actually existed. And now, I desire to make that dream a reality. It's become my one goal in life."
It was at this point that Diana noticed the gray of Astriel's iris. There was indeed something different about his eyes. With a sense of empathy, she responded, "If that story is true, I guess I can understand your resolve."
"Then would you be willing to help me?"
"We'll see. As you wish, I'll find you a task to test you. If you prove yourself, I'll try guiding you to the temple. But be warned. I make no promises that you'll survive the test nor the ascent. Be prepared to die if you fail."
"No worries," Astriel responded with his smile growing, "I'd rather die than fail to live up to this dream."
