[Champion Concept] Alfonso, the Suave Thief Extraordinaire

SSmotzer·12/18/2016, 1:41:34 AM·15 votes·1,442 views

A suave Yordle who uses his charms over his wits to get what he wants, despite his charms being totally ineffective. Through a combination of tenacity, resourcefulness, and blind dumb luck, he has managed to become one of the most successful thieves to ever walk Valoran.

However, he has a tendency to relinquish his ill gotten goods in pursuit of the women of Valoran who catches his fancy, to mixed results.

"Ladies please, there's more than enough Alfonso to go around."

Melee Skirmisher

Passive - Very Sneaky, No?: While Alfonso is stationary in a bush, he will pull up some leaves and temporarily covers himself with them. For a few seconds, Alfonso gains true invisibility, but the enemies can clearly see a moving bush. For the duration allies can also use Alfonso as if he was a bush. Attacking or using an ability(Except W) will cause Alfonso to drop the bush. Also, for a minute, the small section of brush Alfonso uprooted is disabled, until it regrows.

Q - Happy Daggers - Passive: Alfonso pulls out a knife and juggles it in his hand, his basic attacks gain a small amount of bonus range and ignores a portion of his target's armor. If Alfonso does not have his knife, this ability is disabled until he finds his knife, returns to base, or kills a large jungle creature/siege minion/enemy champion.

  • Active: Alfonso throws his knife in a target direction, dealing physical damage and applying a Grievous Wound to his target. The knife either ends up on the ground, if he killed his target or he missed, or the knife is embedded in his target. Alfonso gains bonus movement speed while moving towards his knife, and the next attack against an enemy with his knife in them deals true damage.

W - Deep Pockets: Alfonso poses and channels for a second, any projectile that passes over him while he is posing, he will negate it and place it in his pocket. Recasting this ability will relaunch the pocketed projectile in a target direction, capping the damage based on this ability's level, but any effects would apply.

E - Tango of Death: For Alfonso's next 3 basic attacks, he gains bonus attack speed, twirling around to the opposite side of his attack target with each attack. On his third and final attack, he attacks for 3 additional attacks that occur in the span of 1 attack. The flurried attacks are modified to deal only 50% damage, but otherwise behave like standard attacks.

R - Catch Me if You Can: Alfonso quickly reaches into his pockets and flings several knives and bushes around him for a second in a reasonable area around him. The knives dealing physical damage and applying the effects of Happy Daggers to all enemies hit. For a few seconds, this ability can be recast, targeting Alfonso's bushes, to dash to the bushes Alfonso has flung around.

I can't get the image of Alfonso Ribeiro out of my head.

So... as someone who has been working on a thief champion for a while now, I'm a little biased.

Our thieves are very different, despite both being yordles, but I think mine pulls of the idea of being a thief better. I say this because, as far as I can tell, his W (Deep Pockets) is the only ability that comes close to him stealing anything or capitalizing on the gameplay fantasy of being a thief. I actually like the ability, since its a novel take on what Braum and Yasuo do to projectiles, and I can seem him stealing them out of midair in my mind's eye.

Beyond that though, he just seems like an assassin. Not that his kit lets him burst people like an assassin (it might), but that you put so much emphasis on his use of daggers and knife-throwing ability that he comes off as more assassin than thief. Its like if Talon and Katarina had a baby that turned out to be a yordle with attitude.

I intentionally designed my thief to break away from the DnD and WoW stereotype of a duel-wielding cloak-and-dagger thief, which might better be called a rogue. While Alfonso has one foot outside that stereotype (thanks in part to his personality and him being a yordle), the other foot is rooted in it.

Holy shit

My sides hurt from laughing at those quotes (and that passive title.)

You've nailed flavor on the head, dude. I can't deny that. The comedic relief and the crass mannerisms make this a great concept and I would love to see this in the League of Legends as a playable character. I'd shorten the title, though. Feels a tad too long, yeah?

Let's take a look at his kit here.

Passive is neat, I like bush abilities. I had a concept who heavily interacted with brush a while back, although in a much different manner than Alfonso does. Neat ability, though. It's unique and it fits.

Q: I like it. It's like Olaf's axes, but different enough so that it doesn't look like a carbon copy. After X amount of time, do the knives reappear in his hands regardless of he picks them up, like Olaf's? Doesn't specify, just curious.

W: Interesting. I've toyed with the idea of redirecting abilities before on a very old concept that I don't feel like digging around for since I had posted it on the old forums, well before the boards. Regardless this looks like a great play on the concept of redirection, and it's rather thematic being a thief.

E: Wew. Somebody get this guy some AA proc's on him with rageblade and he's going to go to town. Very unique ability, I like it a lot.

R: Fits the name perfectly. My only question is does the recast have the ability to be activated several times, so he's darting around over and over in a giant frenzy? Because that'd be fucking hilarious and overall just the biggest troll-face since Karthus.

In conclusion:

👌👀👌👀👌👀👌👀👌👀 good shit go౦ԁ sHit👌 thats ✔ some good👌👌shit right👌👌there👌👌👌 right✔there ✔✔if i do ƽaү so my self 💯 i say so 💯 thats what im talking about right there right there (chorus: ʳᶦᵍʰᵗ ᵗʰᵉʳᵉ) mMMMMᎷМ💯 👌👌 👌НO0ОଠOOOOOОଠଠOoooᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒ👌 👌👌 👌 💯 👌 👀 👀 👀 👌👌Good shit

Bravo, bravo. Would you be so kind as to peek about my concept for me? I'm seeking some peer review from some of the other fellas in the CCOS. Thanks lad :)

Ok, so here are some thoughts:

Thematically, your kit is almost there. You have your W, which is a thief like aspect of stealing projectiles and using them as your own and you have your passive which is kinda funny and ties in with the dumb luck part of his description, but you're lacking his personality as a charmer. A skill to charm an enemy similar to Ahri's E could really solidify Alfonso's identity as "suave".

Now the kit itself, regardless of the theme, is pretty solid for an assassin. Landing that Q is your form of gap closing and reduces healing, W is a versatile form of utility and your E is straight up murdering your victim. I like the idea that if you miss your Q it lands on the ground, so you kinda have to do a walk of shame to get it back.

Now, I want to give special attention to your passive, because this is really the most interesting mechanic in your whole kit. I know messing with brushes is nothing new since we now have Ivern to grow them at will, but your passive claims Alfonso rips away existing brush and disables it. It's hard to judge how useful this is without numbers (how long can he carry the brush around? what size is it? how long till a brush regrows?) so I'll judge it based on playing potential. On one hand, ripping away brush has some interesting game effects. You can rip away brush from an enemy's lane, giving them less space to hide. On the other hand, that's brush your team might need in the near future. The thing about Ivern is that he creates new brush, so it doesn't affect the game as hard as removing existing brush. Now for the second part, stealth. Since you're basically in brush you can't be basic attacked, but that just draws enemy attention even more, making you a focal point for non basic attack damage and crowd control. It's a bit counter intuitive for an assassin to draw this much attention but I can't ignore the silliness that fits Alfonso thematically. It's a cartoonish kind of silly that really tickles my fancy, like when you see an oversized character holding a single branch and hiding behind it. The last part is team coordination. Since allies can enter your brush as well, it creates two interesting situations. The first is mind games. Even if you walk around as an obviously visible piece of brush, there's always going to be the risk that more than just Alfonso is inside and so you can fool enemies into thinking you're more of a threat than you really are. The second situation, which is much harder to execute, is gank potential. Again, since allies can move with you, moving together as a unit under Alfonso's cover can mean a very terrifying gank where suddenly Alfonso and one more ally pop out on top lane and turn into a 3vs1 ight, but this means one important thing - coordination between allies. Without good communication and matching your movements to that of Alfonso's, this maneuver would be nearly impossible to execute. It also runs the risk of both you and your allies being caught in a single AoE crowd control because you are huddled so closely together. To summarize, this skill is very interesting and has amazing potential, but I can't say for sure without judging some numbers.

Alfonso as a whole is fairly interesting champion. His basic abilities are fairly simple in design and do a pretty good job expressing his identity as a cartoonish sort of thief in balance with his extraordinary skill at throwing knives. A bit of retouching needed to solidify his "charmer" side, but otherwise a well designed concept.

Is it possible to have some concrete numbers I could work with? Otherwise, I don't think I could make a good review.

Finally getting around to seeing some of the other CCOS entries. . .

Lore/Character: To be honest, I feel like the lore is short, if not there at all, but this is one of the most concrete "characters" I have seen. The personallity trope is extremely readable and hilarious, and it is perfect.

I almost hoped to see more quotes.

Passive: Did you think to make him gain true invisibility in bushes, but after a delay? for instance; he could enter a bush, but still be visible to the enemy for a moment before completely disappearing. Then, if he leaves the bush, he carries a piece of it over him as cover for a moment - as sort of a gag.

Q: I like this a lot. I'm guessing his knife juggling occurs after a certain cooldown? The passive I assume works if he hasn't used the ability active, which makes sense.

*Did you ever think to give Alphonso some kind of creepy attraction to his knife - as if it were one of his damsels? That might strike me as a unique motivation behind movement speed and such. (might also give some ideas for quotes and the like).

W: Not sure if this would work in-game. This might require a re-scripting of just about every skill shot in the game. Of course, it would be interesting, but mechanically, this would be an incredibly tough thing to implement.

Of course, if there were more numerical values on the abilities (albeit, you stated that it is not the point of your concepts to deliberate such details), but it would probably require a hefty cooldown to be considered fair - despite its damage reduction.

E: Like the ability, since it functions as a great way to surprise an enemy stumbling upon him in passive invisibility. However, the name "Death's Dance" is already the name of an item.

item 3812

R: Hmmmmm. It is tough to gauge this ability, especially if bushes and knives are thrown based on an RNG pattern, but might there be a way to make this more strategic? For instance, If he made a large bush around him in the shape of an "X," his enemies would have to guess which way he went, and every tap (re-activation) of R then after would toss knives until he had no more. This would sacrifice his stealth for the sake of damage, but would give the ult some more intrigue than what is currently on the surface.

Overall:

This concept is great. I don't say that too often. Just know that there is no such thing as a perfect champion (hell, Rito messes up fairly often). There are always things you can do to further develop the concept, even if none of the changes reflect anything I said. Definitely keep up this level of work!

The dates for the CCOS have been extended, so you now have much more time to do whatever it is you need to do - edit your concept, enter a new one, what have you.
