Champion Idea: Thell, The Uncrowned King
First things first: I am open to new titles for this idea! Now that that's out of the way: Hello all! Billcurme here, with a new champ idea! Today I thought I'd bring in a rather recent idea: Thell! My main goal for this idea is to feel powerful regardless of how fed you are! Feel free to drop your thoughts in the comments below: I'd love to hear from you!
Thell, The Uncrowned King A Billcurme Champ Idea
Statistics: Health: 590 (+98/level) Health Regen: 8.875 (+1/level) Mana: 235 (+35/level) Mana Regen: 8 (+0.675/level) Attack Damage: 65 (+5/level) Attack Speed: 0.570 (+1%/level) Armor: 22.72 (+4.82/level) Magic Resist: 32.1 (+1.25/level) Movespeed: 325 Range: 125
Thell should feel pretty standered in his statistics for a top-laner. He's beefy, slow, and hits really hard. Nothing particularly special here. Well, unless you count the highest base ad in the game :P Yeah, if he hits you, it'll hurt.
Abilities: Holding Power (innate): Thell’s mastery over powerful magics allows him to hold onto the deadly spells, letting them fester and grow stronger in his hand. All of Thell’s basic abilities can be held, delaying the casting to another time but allowing them to become more powerful. Alt-casting any ability will cause Thell to hold the spell in his left hand, causing it to emit a dark aura. While holding a spell, Thell’s movement speed is lowered by 5%, and he cannot regain the mana used to cast the spell. Each spell has a distinctive aura to differentiate which spell is being held.
Every 6 seconds Thell spends holding the spell, he increases the power of the spell by 10%, powering up to 5 times at 30 seconds. Killing an enemy unit while holding a spell counts as one second towards powering the spell. Champion kills increase a held-spells power by a full tick. Thell may hold a spell for as long as he likes, only expending it when he actually casts the spell. Spells only go on cooldown after they have actually been cast.
While not holding a spell, Thell’s basic attacks deal an additional 10% of his AD as physical damage as he swings with both hands.
In addition, Thell’s abilities cannot be interrupted by crowd-control (crowd control will still effect him, but all abilities that have been cast will still launch.)
Crushing the Mountain (q): Cooldown: 8/7.5/7/6.5/6s Mana Cost: 65 Range: 175 (plus 75 units all around Thell) or 400 (75 width skill-shot) Aura: Swirling dark magic around left hand. Thell unleashes a titanic punch in front of him, dealing 100/150/200/250/300 (+70% ad) physical damage and knocking back all enemies hit after a 1.25 second wind up. If this ability was held with Holding Power, the wind up for the punch is reduced by 0.15 seconds for each increase of power.
While winding up for this ability, Thell can cast it again for no additional cost, causing him to instantly rocket forward, dealing 70/110/140/170/210 (+60% ad) physical damage and knocking up all enemies hit. (Medium speed dash)
This ability can critically hit for reduced crit damage (75%)
Bleeding the Land (w): Cooldown: 22/20/18/16/14s Mana Cost: 70/80/90/100/110 Range: 225 radius (75 units grab range) (Magma size: 150 + 25 per additional tick. Max 250) Aura: Bubbling red aura around left hand Thell leaps into the air for 0.5 seconds before slamming his fist into the ground with incredible force, dealing 60/90/120/150/180 (+25% ad) physical damage and knocking away all nearby enemies. If Thell is next to an enemy champion when he casts this ability, he will grab the enemy and slam them into the ground with him, dealing 80/110/140/170/200 (+40% bonus ad) physical damage and rooting them for 0.6/0.7/0.8/0.9/1 seconds.
If this ability was held with Holding Power, a pool of magama is forced to the surface underneath Thell, growing larger with each increase of power. Enemies that are in the magma are slowed by 30/35/40/45/50% and take 10/15/20/25/30 (+30% ad) physical damage every 0.5 seconds. Magma lasts for 1.5 seconds.
Weathering the Storm (e): Cooldown: 16/15/14/13/12s Mana Cost: 75 **Range:**275 Aura: Wispy yellowish aura that trails behind him as he walks. Thell charges forward a short distance, dealing 60/80/100/120/140 (+40% ad, + 20% bonus armor) physical damage and lightly knocking aside all enemies in his path. While charging, Thell reduces all damage taken by 10/20/30/40/50%. Damage from sources Thell is facing are reduced by 20/35/50/65/80% instead. If Thell is struck with crowd control while he is charging, the effect is delayed until he stops charging.
If this ability was held by Holding Power, Thell charges forward an additional 50 units per increase of power.
Might of the King (r): Cooldown: 130/110/90s Mana Cost: 100 Range: Personal Thell taps into the deepest reserves of his power, erupting in dark magics. For the next 8/10/12 seconds, Thell gains 20/30/40 armor and magic resist, and casts all of his basic spells as if they have been fully powered up by Hold Power.
In addition, for the duration of this ability, Thell gains access to Temporal Jaunt, casting it up to 3 times.
Temporal Jaunt (r): Cooldown: 2s (Cannot be lowered) Mana Cost: 20 Range: 425 Thell warps to target location after a brief delay. Casting this ability does not cancel the channelling of any of Thell’s other abilities. If this ability is cast during the dash or charge from Crushing the Mountain or Weathering the Storm, the ability will continue from the new location, travelling the remainder of the distance.
Author’s Note: Thell is designed to feel Powerful. Every thing about him is designed to feel incredibly strong and fierce, but not unbeatable. Every ability is imposing and terrifying, but he can be outplayed. Thell is slow and all of his abilities are telegraphed. A lane with Thell in it should feel tense, as both parties wait for a misstep. Punishing a Thell who can’t properly use his abilities is rewarding, but so is a Thell who manages to hit even once. And when Thell moves into a team fight, things get properly frightening. Thell packs so much damage, tanky-ness, and crowd control into his kit that a good Thell can easily turn the tide of a team-fight, ripping though his enemies like a knife through warm butter. However, Thell is not immune to crowd-control himself, and even the most fed of Thell’s would find himself hard-pressed to take out an entire enemy team solo. Like a true king, Thell's victory only survives in working with his allies.
Description: Very tall, sleek and muscular. Flowing red mane of silky hair. Sharp and well-kept beard. Dark armor--not bulky, but tough and imposing. A flowing purple cape inlaid with traces silver and gold. Gauntleted fists. Large hand-and-a-half sword forged of dark iron. The look of a man who is used to being respected.
Teaser Trailer idea 1: Slow pan over the ruins of Urtistan. Sombre, quiet music plays. The sky starts to twitch and distort before a large tear forms above the city. A dark shadow plummets towards the ground. Zooming in on the crater shows dark fire burning around, as a gauntlet-ed hand shoots out and grabs a stone on the edge. Zoom in on the hand as it begins to glow with dark power. Fade to black.
Teaser Trailer idea 2: Zilean’s tower. Zilean is staring out a window as the sky burns with fire. The sound of an angry crowd and dark chanting plays over as camera focuses on his sombre face. Fire is reflected in his eyes as we hear someone shouting and cursing. A dark silhouette appears in his eyes, before the scene fades to black.
Lore: In ages past, the kingdom of Urtistan was a utopia. Blessed with great magic and advanced technology, the people of Urtistan manipulated the very essence of time in order to prosper. Crops grew within the hour, wine fermented in less than a day. It seemed that prosperity was the only thing the people of the land would ever know, all in thanks to their wise Chronokeeper, Zilean, and their great king: a man of tremendous magical power, Thell Runespear.
Thell’s life was one of abundance. Never knowing hunger or despair, Thell cherished his kingdom and his people above all else: save perhaps, the powerful magic that made all this possible. Passed down throughout the generations, a powerful ancient World Rune, coursing with chaotic magics, granted the king of Urtistan the power to maintain the kingdom as they saw fit. It was this power, however, that led to the kingdoms fall.
The terrible cataclysmic time that followed became known as the Rune Wars. At the front line of the terrible conflict, Thell threw himself into every fight he could, seeking to extend the influence of his kingdom. While originally supportive of their ambitious king, the people of Urtistan quickly grew tired of his desperate grabs for power, wishing nothing more than an end to the bloody conflict. Conspiring together with the Chronokeeper, the people of Urtistan betrayed their king, using the technology of the Clock Tower to seal Thell beyond time and space, forever imprisoned within the realm of almost was and never to be.
However, peace was not to be found. Without the power of their king to defend them, Urtistan was quickly over-run, the people slaughtered on mass while crying out for the aid of the king they had betrayed. And thus the kingdom of Urtistan burned, wasting away through the annals of time.
Sealed within a realm beyond time, Thell drifted aimlessly throughout vast emptiness. Neither living nor dead, conscious or comatose, Thell struggled against the magic that bound him, seeking to return to his land. Hearing only the cries of his people, Thell cared not for his betrayal or his fate: he cared only to save the kingdom he loved. In desperation, Thell took hold of the World Rune and took its magic into his very being. The chaotic magic tore through his body, threatening to rip him apart--yet his prison turned to his salvation. Existing in a realm of infinite probability, Thell’s body was torn asunder time and again until he landed on the one path where it did not.
Having solidified his own existence in the land of non-existence, Thell’s power began to fester and grow. As ages passed, the power within Thell grew too great to be contained, eventually tearing open the very sky above Urtistan, allowing Thell to return to his kingdom. However, eons had passed by while Thell remained in his prison, and Urtistan was not but a ruin. Distraught with grief at the lose of his land, Thell wandered the ruins aimlessly, eventually finding the great Clock Tower--somehow unscathed. Venturing within, Thell discovered that although his kingdom had fallen, his betrayer yet lived.
Thell vowed that he would return Urtistan to glory, and that once again he would rule--but only after Zilean had payed for his betrayal.
Without a Home: He missed the laughter most of all.
In the home he knew long ago, the streets were always filled with laughter. Children playing their games, adults sharing their stories. People still laughed here, but it was not the same.
It was not Urtistan.
People eyed him warily as he moved through the small farmer’s village. He supposed he must stand out amongst the crowd. He was taller than the people of this town. Gigantic by their standards, really. His armor was dark, sleek and imposing, his cloak flowing behind him in a billowing curtain of dark silk. The few armed men he saw in this part shone like beacons compared to him. He saw a few children stop and point at him. People were whispering.
One of the soldiers stepped in his path. Thell raised an eyebrow at the man, and attempted to move past him, but was blocked by an out-stretched arm. The other soldiers were circling around him.
“You seem lost, friend.” The first one said, looking up into Thell’s emotionless face. “See, it’s strange to find a man with no crest on his armor in these parts. Where you from, friend.”
Thell looked down at the smaller man. The amount of emphasis he put into the word ‘friend’ made it clear he saw Thell as anything but. These men were looking for an excuse to fight. Thell examined the armor, and saw their symbol. Folded Golden wings. Not one from his time.
“South.” The men laughed at his answer, and Thell had to resist the urge to strike them. He wasn’t used to being laughed at--at least not to this degree.
“South, you say?” The man in front of him asked, staring once more at Thell’s dark armor. “Armor looks a little hot for Shuriman garb. Seems more appropriate for Noxus, wouldn’t you say lads? We don’t care for Noxian’s here in Demacia.”
Thell shook his head. He had passed through Shurima, so he knew that phrase, but Noxus? Demacia? He guessed they were warring nations, but other than that, he couldn’t say. Still, he preferred not to fight. Bloodshed without purpose was never to his liking. “I said south, not Shurima. I’m simply a traveling mercenary, looking for an... old acquaintance of mine. And a library, if i can find one open to the public.”
The men looked at him with half-smiles. They obviously didn’t believe him. He honestly couldn’t blame them. As run down as his garb was now, is still showed signs of it’s previous splendor. The leader in particular had a gleam in his eyes.
“A sellsword, you say? Well, maybe you’d care to prove yourself, aye? We could direct you to a town that suits your liking. All you have to do is run a quick bout with me. No problem for a sellsword, right?”
Thell sighed to himself. He supposed this was the best way to go about this. The man was obviously testing his style of swordplay, looking for traces of this ‘Noxus’. His only hope was that this Noxus didn’t use a style derived from old Urtistan swordsman. Holding up his hand to show he consented to the man’s request, he drew his blade.
The soldiers let out an appreciative whistle. “Rather nice sword you have their, friend. I mean, for a sellsword and all.” The men chuckled to themselves as their leader drew up to a position in front of him, drawing his own blade. A two-handed blade, larger even then Thell’s weapon. The man smiled wickedly at him as he moved his feat back into a fighting stance. “I’ll warn you now, friend. I’ve studied under the greatest men in Demacia. Garen himself taught me sword play. So you’d best put your best foot forward.”
Thell nodded solemnly, letting his sword hang at his side. “A great shame, when a wayward student uses his teacher’s name. Care that you don’t shame it, boy.”
The man’s grin dropped and he snarled at Thell’s remark, before launching at the older man. Thell raised an eyebrow as the soldier quickly spun on his heel backwards, launching his sword in a quick and powerful circle. A powerful strike, likely meant to cleave a body in two. Thell lazily raised his blade up to meet it.
The ringing of metal on metal sounded throughout the small town, matched only by the soldier’s gasp of surprise. His comrades were staring on blankly as Thell effortlessly held off the other man’s strike with one hand. Thell looked into the foolish soldier’s eye. The man was struggling, trying to put more strength into his blade, determined to break through Thell’s guard. Thell merely shook his head, before stepping closer to the boy and driving his free hand into the lad’s stomach, knocking him off his feet.
The man collapsed to the ground as Thell was sheathing his blade and stepping past him. The other men looked on in awe, not daring to get in his way. Sweeping past his defeated foe, Thell did hear a croak coming from the ground behind him. “What kind of swordsman punches his foe?”
For the first time in a very long time, Thell allowed himself to smile. “The kind who does anything to live, lad. And I will live.”
“What style did he use?” One of the other soldiers asked, obviously staring at his back.
“That wasn’t a sword style, that was punching!”
“I don’t think it was Noxian, or Shuriman.”
Thell shook his head, before glancing back at the boys behind him. "This is how the men of Urtistan carry themselves. At least, in my time."
Thell looked to the horizon once more, leaving the town staring after him in his wake.
Quotes: Selection: The world will know of Urtistan once again.
Ban: I will not be restrained. Not again.
First Move: No King should outlive his kingdom. If my life could be traded for Urtistan, I would do so in a heartbeat. I may not be the future of Urtistan. But I will be the one to bring it back. War always seems to find me. In my past, I would have relished the chance to fight. I move on.
Moving: I move. Forward. Ahead of the past. Only the future ahead. How many of us are running out of time? Time seems so precious, yet so terrible. Everything fades, in the end. That is why we build. A king? I am lost. I would do anything to turn back time. My people turned against me. Yet I would still do anything to save them.
Attacking: Strike! Attack! You will bleed. You’re in my way. I am unmatched. I am beyond my prime. You cannot test the limits of the limitless! I fight to win. This is not the day I die. I lead by example.
Attacking Epic Monsters: I’ve survived worse than you. Much worse. Child’s play. I am far beyond you, creature. So large, yet still so insignificant.
Joke: Alright, parry, horizontal slice, and then, uhh... Punch! Stabbing AND punching! A winning combination
Joke near an ally Vi: You solve things with punching? I solve things with punching! I feel a certain kinship with you...
Taunt: Crowned or not, I am still king. I shall not fall until Urtistan rises again.
Taunt near an ally Azir: Here we stand, two betrayed sovereigns. We will do better this time. Our kingdoms can do much for each other, Azir.
Taunt near an enemy Ezreal: Thief! Return what was stolen!
Taunt near an ally Janna: Goddess of wind! Bring your splendour to Urtistan!
Taunt near an enemy Kled: How old ARE you? You again? How many wars have you fought in?
Taunt near an enemy Zilean: Tell me you weren’t behind my betrayal, Zilean. Please. Why?! I trusted you! Urtistan fell, and you did nothing! How many died while you watched?! You were my mentor! My friend!
Killing an enemy Aatrox: I remember you from the war. We’ve fought together and against each other time and again.
Killing an enemy Amumu: You... you are familiar to me. I cure you of your pain, Amumu. In your end, I call you ‘friend.’
Killing an enemy Aurelion Sol: Urtistan will reach beyond the stars. You annoy me. For a star dragon, you are rather trivial. I too, can crush a star.
Killing an enemy Azir: I watched your empire fall. It was nothing special. How nice. You raised an empire for me to conquer. Shurima will be a stepping stone for Urtistan.
Killing an enemy Darius: I’ve heard of you. Nothing special. A general? You are weak.
Killing an enemy Ezreal: This is the fate of thieves. If I had the time, I would simply remove your hands, thief. Museum? Those relics belong to Urtistan!
Killing an enemy Garen: Hmph. I was lead to believe you were stronger. Have you tried punching you opponents?
Killing an enemy Illaoi: This is my motion. You were the one who didn’t move.
Killing an enemy Ivern: Damn. I liked that one. Shame his cheer didn’t protect his life.
Killing an enemy Jarvan IV: If a prince wants to fight, he should be strong enough to survive. A prince comes to fight a king’s battle? Foolish
Killing an enemy Kalista: I don’t need you to avenge myself.
Killing an enemy Kindred: I have seen you time and again, specter. You had your chance, but it was stolen from you.
Killing an enemy Mordekaiser: King of the Forgotten trumps King of the Damned. No need for two kings who rule over the dead. My rule over the dead is less literal... or... more literal?
Killing an enemy Pantheon: Weren’t you a girl before? Oh joy. The aspects.
Killing an enemy Poppy: Guess we’ll never find that hero.
Killing an enemy Swain: How often a strategy falls apart after a punch to the face.
Killing an enemy Tryndamere: A barbarian king? Laughable.
Killing an enemy Zilean: I forgave the people, Zilean. You, not so much. Your trap didn’t kill me. That wasn’t a mercy.
Upon being revived by Zilean’s Chronoshift: I am undying! Alright, that was too familiar for comfort.
Well, here he is. As always, I'll be constantly looking to improve the idea, so if you have any comments on anything in his kit, lore, identity, ect, please let me know!
P.S.: I'll be entering Thell in this month's (May 2017) CCOS, so please go check that out! You can find the link here! Always worth checking out the great concepts posted by the community._
