Icathia's Ruin
Champion Concept following the Lore below
~ Short Story ~
Part 1
Maya is Icathian, or was Icathian. She wasn't a member of the legendary Order of Kohari, she wasn't even a soldier back then. Maya was just an ordinary civilian, caught in an unusual event.
For Icathians, knowledge of arms was pretty standard, even for Maya. Most Icathians would have been apart of the army, but at the time there really was not an Icathian army because for years to this point they've been oppressed by Suhriman Rule. None the less, it was an oddity that an Icathian was unskilled with a blade.
At the time of this unusual and catastrophic event, the people of Icathia were unruly. In fact, the Order of Kohari had been orchestrated in secret to overthrow the Shuriman officials that took unwelcome residence there. It was a nasty day, but glorious none the less. All peoples of Icathia rose up and overthrew the foreign occupants. But even their raised spirirts of victory were overshadowed by the looming realization that Shurima will retaliate. And Shuriman retaliation, was the worst. God warriors.
Shurima had God warriors, and no one had anything to do about it. There was buzz about a weapon in the city's pavilion located at the hearth, but as for the hopes and dreams of the city's inhabitants, they were doomed. What could hey honestly do to God warriors?
Part 2
As their day of reckoning came closer, rumors of 9 God warriors approaching spread throughout the city. The members of the Order remained confident, but the people of Icathia were struggling to remain hopeful. For the Order this was it, they were going to leave it all on the table and more likely than not, they will die fighting to remain free of Shurima.
The city fortified their walls and set up theri defenses. Hours from now the army of God warriors would be upon them, but for the time being they had one more night. One more night to rest, one more night to be with their families. They had one more night for something, anything to happen that might change the outcome of the imminent terror that was to come the next day.
Maya went to up to bed as it got dark, and went to sleep. It was in her sleep that she encountered a being of unknown origin, of unknown substance. The being offered help, and Maya accepted. Of course she was asleep, what did she really agree to? Would she even remember when she woke up the next day that someone had visited her in her dream? Was it a dream..?
Part 3
Shurima was upon them now, God warriors in sight. The battle raged on for hours, until Shurima decided they had enough. The Ascended were marching forwards now, lead by the leader with the lion's head, Setaka. The destroyed everything in their path with ease. Apparently they had heard about the weapon too, because their path lead directly to the pavilion at the city's center.
Maya was pushed behind wall after wall, corralled with the children and women who were meant to flee the city to live on. Her mother was clipped by an arrow and Maya remained at her side things only got worse. As her mother died, Maya saw Setaka almost reaching the pavilion now. Maya got up, took a fallen blade with her and stood between the pavilion and Setaka.
Setaka laughed and taunted the young girl, and kicked her so hard she flew through the entrance of the pavilion. It was here that it all changed. Maya relinquished all control and let the voice inside take over. Performing motions with her blade she never formally learned or ever practiced, Maya dashed through Setaka at the speed of light, splitting into 5 copies of herself Maya had released powers she never had. Powers she never knew of. As Maya regained consciousness, 4 surrounding copies of herself rushed in streak of purple back to Setaka, exploding upon impact. Where Maya once was, was now a large gaping hole of nothingness. From there tendrils erupted and took hold of Setaka and removed her from this existence. More tendrils and matter spewed from the abyss and destroyed the city, leaving it in ruins.
Full story
“I bet they still think it was the ‘weapon’... but they just don’t know the truth”.
Sparks were falling onto wood carefully stacked in the center of a stone circle following the intermittent sounds of rocks smacking together. With each blow and subsequent set of sparks 5 shadowy shapes were uncovered sitting equally apart from each other around the stone enclosure underneath the canvas of an unknown cave.
None of the figures were moving, except the one talking. Although in the company of 4 others, she seemed to be talking to herself.
Across the way far into the distance was a city of ruins. No sign of inhabitants, or life for a long while. The outline of its buildings and structures that were demolished shown by the moonlight above, as it was evening now and the sun recently set from the sky.
“‘Let me help you’ he said, or she said whatever it was. I should’ve known not to listen to a voice I cannot trace to its orator.”
Her voice seemed irritated now, and more sparks began to fall onto the wood below and some smoke started to escape from the base of the pile intended to be a campfire, with barely enough wood for one person let alone five. The walls had markings on them, the ground well matted below them. This cave has been the group’s dwelling for some time.
“I just need to open the door again and I’ll find it. Make it pay for taking my family. May it feel the pain my people felt as their city was destroyed before their eyes. I’ll make it feel every feeling I’ve suffered through now built up inside me. I was fooled, taken advantage of.”
The sparks were coming quicker now, the intervals between the rocks smacking together hastened.
“I never wanted to bring them here, how was I supposed to know the power it gave me would lead to that?! We were fighting god-warriors, how could I have said no?!”
flash back
Icathia was reborn the day before. All the servants of the Sun-Emperor were killed by the people of this city taking back what was ours. It was a happy day for us, despite all of the bloodshed and lives lost. Even then however, we knew they’d come back with a vengeance.
I overheard some of the Kohari speaking, the god-warriors were with them. The god-warriors were enormous beyond belief and a disgusting cross of animal and human form. They did terrible things because they just could. I heard there were 9 coming. 9 lead by the ivory skinned lion headed woman whose name was Setaka.
That night I didn’t get much sleep, nor did anyone else based on the noises that ensued throughout the city all night. With the thought of imminent destruction on everyone's minds how could one sleep?
I finally did manage to rest, and it was then I was met in my dreams by someone -or something. I could not see it, only hear it.
dreaming
I was surrounded by darkness but could still somehow feel the movement of something alive and malicious around me. The voice, it sounded like the voice of a man, but it couldn’t have been merely a man. It sounded cunning, but also comforting.
“I can help” echoed the voice around me in the darkness.
“But how? They have god-warriors!” I cried out, anxiously waiting for a response.
I started hearing a deep confident laughter all around me. Were there more than one of these things in this place? It got louder and louder and then very sharply and singularly it was directly in front of me, it felt inches from my face. “A god-warrior can be defeated”
A breathtaking chill took over my body at these words. How can they be defeated? What is this thing able to do that we cannot?
“How will you kill them?” I asked the darkness wearily.
Voices all around me in the darkness began to echo my words “Kill… kill… kill… KILL”. I am definitely convinced there’s more than one of these things here with me now.
“All you must do is accept my help. The god-warriors will not endure forever.”
end dream
The next day I was awoken by screams and the sounds of metal meeting metal, flesh cut open by the sharp edges of swords and spears, and horses retreating in fear of the chaos that filled the city.
“Maya hurry we need to leave now!” my mother screamed.
My mother and I were forced out of our house. My father already in the battle, perhaps still alive, perhaps not. We were pushed behind wall after wall, told to take cover as the Shuriman army and the god-warriors began to infiltrate our city. Just then and arrow flew over my head and struck another woman in front of me. She screamed, still clinging on to life my mother got down to help her.
My mother looked up, “No Maya, go go keep going! Run Maya I will find you!”
Just then I saw the life leave her eyes as she looked at me with every intention of keeping mine in tact. An arrow struck her in the torso and knocked her over.
I remained at her side, but I was not crying. The scene around was moving faster than I could comprehend, and sound was muffled at my ears. I felt sad, but I had no room for emotion.
Then I saw her, Setaka. She looked amazing just as much as she looked terrifying. Just liked the Kohari men described her with her lion head, and ivory skin. She was smiling as if this was all a game to her. It caused a fire to erupt inside me, my mother lay dead at my knees and this woman is smiling?
She was walking to the center of the city were the pavillion stood, rumored to be guarding a weapon. One that could destroy god-warriors. I had to stall her, I had to do something she was almost there. So I ran out between her and the Pavillion, and stood there now face to face with her. She was gigantic.
She laughed at first, “You child, you want to fight me?!” Setaka shouted in what seemed to be more than one voice.
I had no weapon or anything at this point, but I just ran at her. I didn’t know what I was going to do but I knew what I felt. The next moment I was airborne, crashing through the pavillion doors. Setaka kicked me, her foot was larger than me and felt like it crushed every bone in my body. I writhed in pain, and saw the mages were inside still trying to arm the ‘weapon’.
I couldn’t see the ‘weapon’ only a staircase filled with mages running up and down trying to do something, I could not tell. A loud crash came from the doors I just flew through. I got back to my feet;
“Are you sure this how you want to die?” Setaka taunted.
Just then I heard a yell from behind her, and Kohari warrior had run in through the broken doorway with his Nimcha blade drawn back ready to strike, I felt hopeful again. Just as quickly as he came into sight, he was grabbed by Setaka and ripped in two and thrown in my direction. His blade came to skidding halt at my feet.
I picked up the blade, and time began to slow down.
“You are not a warrior, you need not to perish for your elders mistakes. Step aside child, run while you still can.” Setaka yelled.
I drew the sword back shoulder level, then as if I had been practicing this my whole life I slashed the sword downwards, then up to the side and slashed more times than I could fathom all within a second or two then I moved… I was on the other side of Setaka now, I had gone deaf with a ringing noise filling my ears. Finally muffled sounds in the background started growing clearer and clearer, debris was falling all around me, purple matter was crawling grabbing onto everything and anyone. I felt as though I had ran a thousand miles just now. I looked around and saw myself 4 times until I my gaze reached Setaka.
Her body was arched like she had taken a massive blow to the abdomen. She shuttered, and then the 4 versions of myself turned to race towards her, arriving all at once and exploding on contact. Tendrils came up from the staircase which lead to a gaping hole of destruction and started wrapping themselves around Setaka, then finally they pulled her in.
flash forward
“...I just need to find a way to get to-” A loud frustrated smack of two rocks together followed, and as the final set of sparks suspended in the air just above the wood pile a loud, bass-filled, booming sound came from the ruins in the distance.
She looked up, just then the sparks reached the wood pile and elegantly erupted into flames. 5 figures were illuminated sitting patiently around the campfire. 4 of them having a purple skin tone but they all seemed to resemble the one in the middle. Then in the next moment, 2 on each side of her started shifting erratically towards her.. and then became 1. She looked un-phased by this. She was poised, with her eyes locked on the ruins opened wide bursting with apprehension but also with great satisfaction, as if she had been waiting for this moment her whole life.
A faint noise that sounding like an angry whirlwind started growing louder and nearer, and then a shock wave hit the cave, which blew the fire out.
The moonlight fell upon the cave opening once again where the fire wood lay, smoldering. No one was there.
Lore Explanation, a bit of a TL;DR
Maya, an Icathian, was preparing for the Shuriman Invasion accompanied by Ascended warriors. She was met in a dream by someone that we know to be the void, however she doesn't know. She does not however know how to open the void portal, but she desperately wants revenge against the one who fooled her.
