Commuity Created Champion - Annual Contest

All this PURE GOLD user created content that never leaves Boards.

I recently came across a thread (link above) where the creator talked about how disappointing it is to see all of these great posts of champion concept designs but then watch them disappear into the forum abyss and nothing every really comes of it. League of Legends has a great community with a lot of talented concept creators who create extremely detailed designs, which got me thinking about ways to get all of this content out into the public so I thought I would start with a post on my thoughts because I think there is a pretty simple and great solution.

SOLUTION Every year RIOT holds a vote between (lets say) 5 or 10 community created champions and the community votes for their favorite to be brought into the game. Then Riot creates that champion... There are a lot of games that feature community voted content, and RIOT releases about 5 champions each year so making one of them a community created champion would have so many positives.

  1. This allows the community to feel more involved in the creation of game they love
  2. RIOT still maintains control of the champions they would pick for us to vote on, so it wouldn't unbalance the game state
  3. Champion concept creators can be recognized for their work

RIOT could monitor the forums and other places where people post champion concepts, or they could create a guideline for people to submit there ideas to and then pick the ten best for us to vote on.

I feel like there is literally no downside to this, the community gets more say while RIOT can still choose champions that fit their vision for the future of the game.

I don't know if this will ever happen but it's nice to think about. There is such a huge player base that loves this game and would love the ability to have more of an impact. Even if it's just voting for a champion for RIOT to bring into the game.

I want to keep this idea alive.

This is the second thread of this sort on the front page now, so I'll reiterate some of my points.

  • Who reads through all the concepts thoroughly enough to find the good ones? You'd need skilled designers to judge an entry's viability, and skilled designers are A: expensive, and B: would rather be designing things.
  • What happens if the final released champion (after testing, balancing, lore editting, etc) doesn't resemble the original champion at all? Initial kits are often completely different from final iterations, and no champion on these boards has been thoroughly tested in a live game environment.
  • What happens when the contest grows to thousands and thousands of entries?
  • What happens to all the players upset that their preferred champion didn't win? There will be HUGE pressure to make anything that gets a decent number of votes.

It's a good idea in theory...but in practice it's MUCH less feasible and much more complicated / expensive than it first appears.

Creating a system that forces community created champions into League would have a horrible outcome. The Djinn rose excellent points on how it's a completely different world to talk about ideas than actually design champions.

I post champ concepts sometimes, but most of them I just type up and let sit on a folder in my computer. I've got 24 now. None of them would work in the game as-is. It's not an issue of not being well-designed enough, it's because I'm not a champion designer, I just have ideas for kits & lore.

That said, I would REALLY appreciate a more structured community around sharing and discussing champ concepts for fun. I don't share mine now because even if I get a positive response (rarely) it's usually things like "rITO PLS PUT THIS IN GAME" as opposed to useful feedback.

Edit: I wanted to add, I would MUCH prefer Riot's design team work on the stuff they do now than spend any time culling community content for inclusion into the game. Even if they had the ability to hire people for the express purpose of your idea I would much rather see them go towards furthering what they already do. The only thing I'd ask of them is feedback from time to time.

I would participate. That is all.
