Midas Kingsley, the Spirit of Greed
Midas Kingsley, the Spirit of Greed
Story:
Greed makes people do strange things. Take, for example, the story of Midas "Bloodmaw" Kingsley, a pirate of Bilgewater. By trade, he made a name for himself as one of Bilgewater's most powerful privateers, escorting and plundering ships. One of his personal rituals was to place one gold coin in a special chest for every successful job he undertook. The years wore on, and the chest filled up. Discussions began to spread amongst the crew over how they were going to split the gold when the captain died. These whispers slowly drove the already paranoid old captain into a silent madness. Night after sleepless night, he would sit in front of his special chest, with a bandolier of pistols and his cutlass to defend it from thieves and "the creatures in the shadows", until one morning, he ordered his men to set sail for the open sea. When they returned, the captain was gone, as was his chest. The sailors reported that the captain, in a fit of madness, had lashed the chest to his back and leapt into the sea as so no one could steal his precious gold.
Time went on, and the name of Midas Kingsley soon faded into obscurity, though every now and again, a treasure hunter or two, hearing snippets of the story, would come to Bilgewater to try their luck at finding the treasure. Many who went off to search the depths never returned. Consumed, presumably, by those that dwelled below.
Now, recent reports from various ships speak of a man made of gold with a chest tied to his back climbing into their ships to take all their valuables. Attempts to stop him have been futile, as anything and anyone that touches him with intent to harm or bind is turned to gold and tossed overboard. One eyewitness claims that this golden figure is none other than Midas Kingsley himself, come to claim the treasures that his disappearance had denied him. The witness continues that he saw Midas approach a young man and turn him to gold, before tossing him into the sea. Investigations revealed that the young man's grandfather was a former crewmember of Midas's ship, though this may be just a coincidence, as several another witnesses reported similar events happening, but with victims that had no relations to Midas or his crew.
Attempts to dissuade him from attacking have been met with some success, with the most effective tactic being to toss a daily offering of gold, silver, or gems into the water.
