Champion Concept: Henry, The Interloper
As a lover of mages, and especially mage supports, I've come out with this champion concept, Henry. Though technically an Enchanter/Control Mage hybrid, similar to Morgana, he's still more damage dominant. Listening to what many people are voicing for, more streamlined champion designs, and less overly flashy plays, this champion might just fill that void.
Basic Information
Class: Mage
Role: Support
Damage: 2
Crowd Control: 3
Utility: 2
Mobility: 1
Toughness: 1
Abilities and Playstyle
Passive: Hextech Staff, using his staff, Henry increases the mana regeneration of all nearby ally champions within range of the aura by a small amount, including himself. Scales with level.
Q: Arc Lighting, Releasing a bolt of lightning from his hand, it stuns the first target hit, before spreading and hitting up to 4 more enemies, each taking full damage but only being stunned for half as much as the first target. Scaling with AP, and dealing moderate damage with a shorter cooldown, this is intended to be his poke move in lane, and later becomes an invaluable move in team fights. Is a skill shot.
W: Charge, Zapping an ally champion, he grants them increased movement speed and rapid health regeneration that diminishes over 4 seconds. It can be casted on himself, but at half its power. On a moderate cooldown and with a low AP ratio, but having higher mana cost, this is his buff ability, and should be saved for either engaging and closing a kill, or for disengage, allowing your ally, or yourself, to run away.
E: Convergence, After casting this ability, for a 4 second duration Henry is unable to use any of his abilities, but completely negates the first enemy ability that hits him, after which ends the duration. Should he successfully absorb an ability, for the next 10 seconds he can recast this ability for no mana to release a sphere of energy that stuns the first enemy hit, dealing half as much damage as the enemy ability. To make up for its lack of damage, it has a very large AP ratio bonus, but to balance out the fact that it's essentially a Cleanse, it has a high mana cost coupled with a long cooldown. The second cast is a skill shot, but has a decent sized hit box, making it not so terribly hard to land.
R: Rise, Slamming his hand on the ground, Henry unleashes a shockwave of energy in a large radius, stunning enemies based of how close they are to him, while increasing the movement speed of all ally champions based on how close they are to him that diminishes over 3 seconds. The AP ratio is average, and dealing mediocre damage, this is great as a set up move, but puts him in a vulnerable position, and should be saved for disengage.
Now that I've gone over the abilities, next come playstyle. Henry is a poke support that's capable of taking the defensive when needed, and in many ways is similar to Karma in playstyle. Being on the more defensive side, he reacts instead of outright engaging, waiting for the enemy to attack first or make a mistake before going in with the stuns, and setting up enemies for his ADC. With his lack of mobility and being overall squishy, it's important to always stay a safe enough distance away from the enemy should they engage. During late game, should that ever become a thing again, it's important for him to stick with the team and try and to support them, doing your basic support things.
Background
A child of both Piltover and Zaun, Henry's life is one surrounded by scandal, and his own story dates back before his birth. His mother, a Zaunite scrapper, and his father, a Piltovan noble, were star crossed lovers, their affair sending shockwaves throughout the Piltover aristocracy. When the two eventually married, and the mother with child, rather than have their son tarnish their reputation, Henry's grandparents all but completely disowned their son for his choice to marry a woman of Zaun. Still with his connections however, Henry's father was able to provide most necessities, and afforded them life in the Promenade level of Zaun.
When Henry was born, he found himself in a difficult situation, being to affluent to be accepted by most other children of Zaun, but not affluent enough to be accepted by those of Piltover. Where his mother wanted Henry to try and make connections in Piltover, for the sake of having a better life and a better future, his father disdained his once fellow Piltovans, and encouraged their son to embrace the life of Zaun. It wasn't until Henry met a fellow child, a sumpsnipe by the name of Cullen, that Henry chose Zaun. The two boys were inseparable, and Cullen quickly taught Henry the ways of a "proper" Zaunite. They would play little pranks for the joy of it, causing mischief when they could, and more than once stole the coin pouch of a Piltie noble. As Henry fell further into Zaun, by sheer coincidence so did his parents, his father's reputation diminishing over the years till not a single one of his former friends would have him, and what became a few hours in the Gray here and there quickly turned to months. Where there was once food plentiful, Henry went days with only a few crumbs of bread. His adventures through the alleyways and chem pools turned into the boy's reality.
His parents only grew depressed overtime, his mother becoming a fanatic worshipper of Janna, while his father took up the life of a factory worker, making meager wages. Henry soon began stealing more and more when his parents could afford food, yet he always felt guilty afterwards. Down in the sump, now more than ever he welcomed by the children of Zaun, his only source of joy in the toxic city. They would take about hopes and dreams, Cullen more than once proclaiming how he'd become the most feared Chem-Baron of them all, though Hnery knew he couldn't even hurt a fly. During those deep talks of what if's and could be's, Henry promised that should he ever make it up to Piltover, he would bring them all with him, to stick it to those uptight coats.
During a particular hungry night, Henry, after listening to his mother go on about the benevolence that is Janna, thought he might pray, just this once. Looking up into the Gray that clouded the night sky, he whispered for hope, prayed to Janna for things to change. Days later, Henry turned 14, and he was given one present from each of his parents. His mother made him a cake with what little food was left, while his father, having "borrowed" some things from the factory, made the boy a necklace of wire and copper, decorated with glass. When he returned to his room that night, something most unexpected happened, from his hand shot sparks of energy, arcane in nature. Excitement swelled within him, and only minutes later he showed this to his parents. He had never seen them happier. It was a week later when the change truly began. Arriving late after scouring through the Sump, he found the shack that was his home had been emptied, his parents waiting for him. Henry wasn't given an explanation, and only flowed his parents.
He was most confused when they arrived in Piltover, welcomed by people he had never seen before. Apparently they were his grandparents, not that the boy was aware that they existed before then. According to his mother, the very next day after his birthday, his father had written a letter to his own parents, telling them of Henry's arcane abilities. Where in other lands his powers would have had him shunned or turned into a weapon of war, in Piltover he was a rare but much wanted commodity. In the next years that followed, he was given enough education to last a lifetime, tutored from things as common as math to as esoteric as Ionian cultural festivals, with major studies revolving around Hextech. To his grandparents, Henry's magic, and the boy himself, was seen as a tool, to create more powerful Hextech, and to become a rival of all other clans. Henry turned raw magic into pure unfiltered energy. Though his life became a series of requirements and restrictions Henry swallowed them up for the sake of his parents, and for a better life. His life in Zaun, despite the hardships, became distant and longing memories, and those he once knew became nameless blank faces.
Out of fear of losing control of a powerful asset, or perhaps out of sheer hatred, Henry's grandparents had his mother killed. They lied of course, saying it was a street mugging gone for the worst, that she was murdered by Zaunites mistaking her for a true Piltovan. Both he and his father knew it was his grandparents behind the murder, as they saw them smile at the funeral, yet neither had the evidence to prove it, and so they accepted it bitterly. His father took it the worst, killing himself shortly after, leaving Henry alone in a gilded cage. It was during a visit to the docks that Henry was reminded of the life he once knew. Cullen, having grown into a gruff man, had become a sailor, making a decent life for himself. The two quickly became the best of friends once more, and Henry, without his parents to give him a reason to continue any longer, began to tire of his life in Piltover, wishing to experience what he could while he was still young. His grandparents, for a second time, fearing loss of control over the boy, and had Cullen killed, using the same excuse they had used for his mother. It was months later that Henry found the evidence he needed to damn them, having found a letter in his grandfather's study that was supposed to have been sent to the hitman that killed his friend. He knew he could have them arrested for their crimes, but that would have done little, as they most likely would have bought their way out.
To this day, nobody is quite sure what happened to the boy's grandparents, only that they suddenly left, leaving a letter that gave all their assets and belongings to Henry. His grandparent's departure did as much good as bad, however. With them no longer around, despite his magical prowess, Henry was no longer seen as Piltovan, only as a Zaunite trying to act like one. It was in honor of Cullen that he decided to stay, rather than leave. Making due on the promise he made so many years ago, Henry brings up those from Zaun that Piltover would only stick their nose up at, but with the power and wealth of a clan, few stand in his way. While his benefactors receive some of the best Hextech money can buy, those who would damn him are soon paid a visit, and left shocked, sometimes literally. He is not alone in his fight, with more than one Chem-Baron asking for his favor, ready to send their thugs out on whoever Henry wishes. Now a name both feared and detested among the Piltover elite, Henry is ready to tear down the walls for his people.
(I feel that a champion's story should say something about where they live, and part of my reason for making a mage that lives in Piltover/Zaun is to show how mages in this area live, similar to how Lux shows us what it's like for mages in Demacia, and Taliyah for mages in both Noxus and Shurima.)
I do have some concept art for this champion that's in the making, and I will later add it to this thread, when it's finished.
