BUT OH MAN RIOT! You could've made Azir's escape tied somehow to Ezreal! That would've been crazy! Towards the end of the story, I was like, that stele is going to be what brought Shurima back to glory (ya know, cause it was found in an ancient Shurima vault) AHHHHH.
Would've been so cool man.
Here's the thing about story telling - everything doesn't have to interconnect. In fact, when you interconnect TOO MUCH, as Riot has been doing by making Targon the Oprah of celestial power, and by making all the evil in the world Void related, stories get stale and the richness of the world degrades severely. And we already know what revived Azir, it was Sivir bleeding to death in the desert - her blood seeped into the earth and reawakened her great x1000 grandpappy Azir through their shared royal blood line.
Also, the unnamed emperor's mausoleum above Ne'Zuk's very well could have been Azir's.
