Karuna the divine emperor of the light
History : Princess Kunti receives a blessing from the sun god Sūrya and gives birth to a baby boy. As she is not married and this birth would put her in a delicate situation, Kunti abandons the child by placing it in a basket that she throws on the waters of a river. The newborn is collected by a carter, Athirathan, who names him Karuna and raises him as his own son.
Growing up, Karuna refuses to do the same job as his father and prefers to become a warrior. He first tries to become a pupil of Dronacharya (more commonly called Drona), but Drona refuses to take him as a student because Karuna is not part of the caste of the Kshatriyas, the caste of the noble warriors. Karuna then becomes the pupil of Parashurama, a famous guru who has already trained other heroes of the epic, including Drona and Bhishma. But as Parashurama has vowed to deliver his teaching only to Brahmins, Karuna introduces himself to him by pretending to be a Brahmin. Parashurama accepts him and carries him away until he declares that Karuna has become his equal and that he has nothing to teach him about the art of warfare and bow handling. Shortly after, Parashurama takes a nap and has only Karuna's knee pillow. During her master's sleep, Karna is stung by a bee in her thigh, but, despite the pain, he does not move so as not to disturb his master. Parashurama wakes up soon after and sees blood dripping from Karuna's wound, which shows that Karuna is not a Brahmin contrary to what he has claimed. Parashurama then curses Karuna and predicts to him that all his knowledge in the handling of the divine weapon Brahmastra will fail him at the precise moment when he will need it most. In the face of Karuna's pleas, Parashurama must admit that he never had a student so attentive, and still entrusts him with Bhargavastra, a heavenly weapon, as well as his own bow, Vijaya.
Later, Karna meets Duryodhana, one of the Kauravas, and becomes his friend. This led him to take sides with the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war and, as a result, to fight, at first without knowing it, against his half-brothers the Pandavas. Karna is admired for her strength, generosity and fidelity to the given word.
On the 16th and 17th days of the war, described in Karuna Parva (Book 8 of the Mahābhārata), Karna took command of the Kauravas. Krishna warns Arjuna, chief of the Pandavas, to be wary of it because of Karuna's great worth. Karuna and Arjuna fight each other for a long time without one or the other taking over; Karuna manages to cut the string of Arjuna's bow several times. But at one point, one of the wheels of Karuna's tank sinks into a muddy part of the ground. Karuna has to come down to disembark his tank while continuing to defend himself, but, when he needs it most, his knowledge in the handling of his weapon is suddenly lacking, because the curse he has suffered is effective. Accused, he asks Arjuna to respect the usual uses of the fight and give him time to clear his wheel before continuing the duel. But at that moment, Krishna reminds Arjuna of the many betrayals and tricks committed by the Kauravas during the war. Indignant by these reminders, Arjuna uses one of his divine weapons, Anjalika, to kill Karuna.
While Karuna is dying on the ground, his father Sūrya is busy arguing with Indra, Arjuna's father, about which of their sons is superior to the other. The two fathers decide to put Karuna to the test one last time and present themselves to him in the form of Alms-giving Brahmins. Karuna first answers that at the point where he is, he has nothing he can give them alms. But one of the Brahmans points out that he has some gold in his teeth that might be useful to them. Karuna then seizes a stone and breaks a tooth he gives to the Brahmans: he thus proves his superiority.
Appearance: Appearance Edit He is described as a young man with long, uncombed white hair that appears almost transparent. His gaze is described as as sharp as an iron blade with red stones embedded in his chest projecting in a manner similar to an enthralling luster. It is also specified that what catches the eye more than anything is its golden amulet set with which it fused, displaying a divine radiance. While each part is said to be beautiful in its own right, when they combine with them, shows more ferocity than attraction.
