I know this is an old thread, but I still find the Ruined King a fascinating concept. Although I made a champion concept for the ruined king about a year ago, I only just recently posted it here on the boards. I personally also thought of the king as a magus so I wanted to keep some elements like that with him. However, I also figured that he was... well a RUINED king. As such, I actually made him contrary to what he once was in life.
Making the Ruined King based on The Black Mist is an idea I liked a lot, but then Riot threw all of that jazz into
Yorick. I didn't want to steal Yorick's thunder, but I also wanted to give a significant connection to it. So, I decided to actually define the way the Ruined King was resurrected in a method much different from every other ghost: mana.
Since the king had a strong affinity for magic while alive, I figured he would be adept in his usage of mana. However, stopping here seemed to shallow. So, I actually used this as an opportunity to explore what exactly mana is. When the Vastayan lore came to be, there was a connection with magic and life. There are many cataclysms across Runeterra that are causes a magical disturbance and even brings rise to the reason our champions came to be who they are. However, this was one of the few times that magic itself was associated with life, the other time was the history of The Blessed Isles.
The Blessed Isles had a mystical tree that
Kalista was aware of. In the time Blessed Isles was in its prime, it was a magical place, described in a way much like elvish lands. When that tree was abused through the Ruined King, the whole entire island became plagued with the Black Mist we all know.
The canonical story stops here. However, there is a point that seems quite odd to me. The Ruined King literally gives up his entire kingdom, livelihood, and even ignores his own niece being murdered to do one thing: resurrect his wife. However, all that happens is that his wife ends up an amalgamation and the Ruined King dies in his uncontrollable sense of guilt. This ending is simply too shallow. The very essence of life of the Shadow Isles disappeared, but where exactly did it go? In my honest opinion, the only sensible answer is the person the Ruined King poured his entire will to: the Queen.
In the passing of the Ruined King, there had to be some kind of element of existence of the Queen now. One of the biggest conundrums is as such, why did the dead resurrect? It would make sense of the price of giving a life, as deformed as it was, to take a life--in a Fullmetal Alchemist kind of trade. However, these souls resurrected somehow. Would there not be a price for their resurrection? The only thing that makes sense in my opinion is that these souls are driven by a source of magic that replaces the requirements of life. Since the Black Mist that killed them in the first place came from the mystic tree, it only makes sense that the Queen is involved in this matter. So, I gave a purpose to this theory: the Queen controls the Black Mist.
If the Queen controls the black mist, then the obvious conclusion we can come to is that the Maiden of the Mist is the Queen herself. However, in the story, she is clearly described as a disgusting abomination. The Maiden of the Mist does not fit that description, it would be more sensible to call her a wraith rather than an abomination. So, perhaps when the Queen was alive as an abomination, she sought after ways to revive her human form. As such, she would become a witch of excessive magical aptitude. This makes sense since she had the power of the mystical tree that fueled an entire island poured into her, and since her husband was adept with magic in life.
As fancy as her necromancy abilities in game are, the Maiden of the Mist can't exactly thought of as an ascended witch. If anything, she's more like a super minion. What's up with that? Well, this is where the King finally comes in. I won't go into much detail since this is a significant part of the final part of the lore I am writing, but essentially the Queen exhausts a majority of her magical aptitude to resurrect her husband, The Ruined King.
The timespan of the fall of the Blessed Isles and The Ruined King's resurrection can easily be over the course of millennia. So this is where I am starting the lore with the Ruined King. Instead of him being a epic wizard, I transformed him into a more of a Noble Knight King. The reason being is that he is struggling with the Black Mist to focus, which is clearly important for a mage, and he was resurrected in unknown hostile territory: the ocean abyss. As such, he lost an arm and became incredulously sluggish relying on fundamental raw strength and clear will to survive in order to get by. Since the Ruined King was infused with the magic that the Queen accumulated and mastered over the course of millennia, mana became a critical part of the Ruined King's survival. He is gradually guided back to the Shadow Isles in order to atone for his mistakes, as his kingdom is long gone now.
During his quest, the King is guided by a transcendent force that aids in his survival and his direction. It is for this reason that his wisdom sharpy increases from what would normally be expected from his short-sighted decisions in the past. With a combination of a transcendent force, mana sustaining his life, and the lack of clarity in his memories, he can only be described as cryptic. Thus I gave him the new title, the Cryptic King. Even though some would call him the Reborn King while he was life, once he died his story faded into legend due to his short-lived second life, which lends into why he is called the Cryptic King as many things are unknown about him.
I am using this premise as an opportunity to give some depth into the personality of many other champions and the backstory of certain items. I am creating this champion as a true legendary character. Someone who is literally dead, gone from Runeterra, but is remembered in legend through his interactions with the individuals he met along the way. Most importantly of all, the finale of this character is embedded in the very reason why we play League of Legends. This transcendent force is responsible for nexus crystals--and the existence/purpose of World Runes.
Hopefully, I get some attention so I actually have a reason to finish this story at all. It would be a shame for this to forever by lost as a cryptic mystery of The Cryptic King.
