[Champion Concept] Reflex, The Speedster (Redux)

Intro Over two years ago I thought about what a speedster champion might look like in League of Legends, so I threw together a kit inspired by my two favorite speedsters, Sonic the Hedgehog and The Flash. It was horrid. Fast forward to present day, and I now feel confident in taking another crack at the idea with much more knowledge and confidence than the first time around. So, here we go!

Reflex, The Speedster

Class: Assassin/Fighter

Lore When you grow up in the most dangerous region of Shurima, you learn a few things about survival: one, never cross the wastes at night; two, never fight the Xer'Sai alone; three, never EVER try to fight Rek'Sai. These are the rules that a peculiar little boy grew up learning, and he followed them without question. No one knew where he had come from, but everyone knew he wasn't normal; the little boy had speed no human could have possibly possessed. Some say he was cursed by magic; others claim he was touched by the Void as an infant. In any case, without help, the boy would have perished, and a group of mercenaries thought to put the boy's unusual speed to good use. He couldn't rememeber having a name for himself, so the mercenaries gave him one: Reflex, or Flex for short.

Flex was taught the basics of pickpocketing, fighting, and desert living by the mercenaries, and to him, they were his family. With his incredible speed, Flex was able to help secure many jobs and rewards for the mercenary group; most of them treated him well, and one in particular took a special liking towards him, Khaldir, the leader. Khaldir looked at Reflex as a son, and their best chance for surviving out in the Shurima Wastes. Even better, with Reflex at his side, Khaldir knew that they may even be able to compete with Sivir, and finally leave the Wastes for good. However, not everyone in the mercenary group felt comfortable about Reflex, and this would prove disastrous for them all.

A small dissident group within the mercenaries had always feared and mistrusted Reflex due to his unnatural speed and its mysterious origins. In their eyes, the fact that his speed left a purple glow in its wake, the same color as the hides of the Xer'Sai, meant that he was touched by the Void; such a thing meant that he was a threat to them all, and he needed to be dealt with. The connection between Khaldir and Reflex was obvious, and the easiest way to dupe the Void-touched child into a trap. The dissidents grew ambitious as they planned Reflex's demise, thinking that they could also get rid of Khaldir and run the mercenaries themselves; led by a man named Rakash, the dissidents set their plan into motion.

Rakash began subtly converting many of the mercenaries to his way of thinking, saying that Reflex had to be cursed by the Xer'Sai, and that Khaldir was going to lead them to ruin by trusting Reflex so much. By now, the boy had grown into a teenager, and Rakash used the fear of what might happen when he became full grown to sway even more to his side. Finally, the time was right, and the dissidents' plan was put into action. Rakash, along with a small team of men, subdued Khaldir in the dead of night and took him out into Xer'Sai territory. One of the dissidents woke up Reflex, telling him that Khaldir was in danger. As quick to act as he was to move, Flex immediately headed out of the camp and towards Khaldir; what he found was Rakash and four of his men, with Khaldir unconscious at their feet with a blade to his throat. Nearby, Xer'Sai had begun to gather, and Rakash ordered Reflex to throw himself to their mercy or Khaldir would die. Without hesitation, Reflex ran straight at the herd of Xer'Sai, and Rakash watched, expecting to see the young man be torn to pieces.

However, something very different happened as Reflex came skidding to a stop amongst the Xer'Sai; they were wary of him, and the presence of the Void inside his body. Rakash, furious, slit Khaldir's throat and tossed his body towards the herd. Reflex, upon seeing his father figure's body crumpled on the ground, let out an inhuman roar of agony. Void energy surrounded his body, and the Xer'Sai backed away from him as he approached Khaldir's corpse. Reflex clenched his hands into fists, then set his sights on Rakash and his dissidents. Before they could move more than a few steps, Reflex was on them, a blur of fists and Void energy that tore them apart. When it was all over with, Reflex was covered in blood, and a darkness had settled into his eyes that had been previously absent. He buried Khaldir in the desert sand, then abandoned the mercenary group, cutting his own path through the wastes.

Stats Health: 550 +75 per level Health Regen: 1.2 per second +0.5 per level Mana: 300 +35 per level Mana Regen: 1 per second +0.5 per level Attack Damage: 55 +3 per level Armor: 22 +3 per level Attack Speed: 0.7 +2% per level Magic Resist: 30 +1.5 per level Movement Speed: 340

Abilities Passive: Fast Hands Reflex has learned how to channel his speed into his fighting, making his strikes almost as fast as his feet. Half of any bonus percentage to his movement speed is also applied to his attack speed.

Q: Quick Strike Mana Cost- 40/45/50/55/60 Cooldown- 7 seconds across all ranks Range- 400 Duration- 4 seconds Reflex uses his incredible speed to lash out at his target, delivering a flurry of blows. For a short time, whenever he autoattacks, Reflex dashes to his target within range, and his attacks deal an extra 40/60/80/100/120 damage. Killing a target grants him a brief bonus to his movement speed (+50% for two seconds).

W- Void Whirlwind Mana Cost- 50/60/70/80/90 Cooldown- 15/13/11/9/7 seconds Range- 600 Combining his superspeed and the Void energy within him, Reflex launches forward in a frenzy. He bursts forward until he either hits a champion, large/epic monster, or hits the end of his range; then he lets loose an explosion that damages everything in a 300 unit range of him. Reflex is immune to CC while using this ability, and the explosion deals 70/100/130/160/190+ (0.8 AD) damage. Reflex ignores unit collision for the duration of this ability.

E- Running Man Mana Cost- N/A Cooldown- 18/16/14/12/10 Range- 1500 Duration- 3/3.5/4/4.5/5 seconds Passive- Increases Reflex's movement speed by 5/8/11/14/17%. Active- Reflex focuses on a single target, and for a limited duration he gains double his movement speed while moving towards that target. If he reaches his target and inflicts damage before the duration of this boost wears off, he reduces the cooldown of all his other abilities by 25%.

R- Speed's Edge Mana Cost- 100/100/100 Cooldown- 100/80/60 Duration- 4 seconds Reflex pours on all his speed at once, turning him into a devastating blur of force. For the duration of Speed's Edge, Reflex is untargetable and ignores unit collision. Upon contact with an enemy champion, Reflex unleashes the full force of his speed into a single blow that carries him through the target, dealing 200/250/300 + (1.5 AD) physical damage. The force of the blow knocks the target up and leaves them stunned for a short period (Knock-up time 0.5 seconds, stun duration 1.5 seconds). Reflex gains extra damage for the final blow the longer he moves before delivering it, gathering even more speed. 1.5 seconds: +5% damage 2.5 seconds: +10% damage 3.5 seconds: +20% damage

Clarifications I know my wording isn't the best when it comes to abilities, so here I'll clarify a few things that pop out in my mind that may not be clear.

Passive: Fast Hands -Temporary boosts do count for this effect, albeit only for the duration of the boost of course. -Only percent increases to movement speed are applied to his attack speed; flat increases to movement speed do not count towards Fast Hands.

Q: Quick Strike -The bonus movement speed granted by killing the target procs Fast Hands for the duration of the boost. -Reflex can dash to his target through terrain so long as he has vision on them.

W: Void Whirlwind -Reflex can still be targeted and damaged while using this ability. -This ability cannot go through terrain.

E: Running Man -Reflex must inflict damage from a basic attack or ability onto his chosen target in order to gain the cooldown reduction bonus. -Reflex can only target enemy champions with the active portion of this ability.

R: Speed's Edge -Reflex can be affected by AoE damage and effects while under the effects of Speed's Edge. -The extra damage is calculated by the total damage Speed's Edge would deal, but before armor is applied. -The knock-up and stun occur simultaneously with the damage. -Untargetable in this instance means that Reflex cannot be selected as a target for autoattacks and abilities. However, he is still vulnerable to AoE damage and CC, as well as abilities that do not require a target to be selected (i.e. Karthus ult).

Item Builds Reflex gains the most from Attack Damage, followed closely by Attack Speed and Movement Speed. Early on he is quite mana hungry, but building straight mana on him doesn't reward him much, so it's better to smartly manage your abilities rather than trying to build mana items. His main form of damage comes from autoattacks, and thus he benefits from on-hit effects and attack speed.

Helping support CCOS!

My review of Colt, The Lost Gunman

My review of Nathaniel, the Maverick Guardian Updates Overhauled his Passive, Q, W, and R, got rid of the Velocity stack mechanic. Feels more like a speedster now. Took another crack at the passive, still trying to find a good fit. Tweaked Q and R, added a few new quotes. Added some clarification to his abilities. Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback, it's been incredibly helpful!

Holy crap this is awesome!

Before I get ahead of myself, allow me to get my criticisms out of the way. Firstly, while I'm absolutely in love with the concept of this champ the name just...doesn't jive well with me. It feels too generic and out of place for the origins of the character. I understand, he has no actual name but it just feels...off. I dunno, it's a minor gripe really.

Secondly, I feel that the excess Velocity stacks mechanic on Speed's Edge would be better used for CDR rather than mana cost reduction, to fit even more into the theme of speed, although it would have to have a hard cap to prevent the ult from being on a 20 odd second cooldown. No less than a solid minute is the amount I would shoot for.

All critiques aside, this is a very solid concept. I love the idea of a speed demon champion, just the idea of an assassin deftly darting in and out of combat is a very intimidating image.

I'd have to give Reflex a solid 9/10. If it wasn't for the fact I had one complaint, despite how minor it is, he would've gotten a perfect score. Great job man.

Have a good one. -HD

I like the idea, it would be cooler if his speeds edge let him run through terrain like a bard portal only for himself though. But that wouldn't be a very good ult. He sounds fun, I have been waiting for a speedster kind of champion. I mean we got some fast champions and some based around movement like illaoi or moving like the wind like Janna but not one based on true speed.

I'm just going to say that the Q is a targeted 700 range gap closer which is effectively an empowered autoattack on a 2 second cooldown which also works as an execute with a mana cost low enough that it's effectively free. Also it's a blink so you can't even interrupt it with something like Poppy W...

Basically once you get in range they die unless you get bursted because they sure as hell aren't getting away from you. Period.

Might want to consider un-overloading the ability a bit.

ScarlettScorn1/20/2016, 5:05:47 PM1 votes

So who is faster? Quinn's dumb ult or Reflex? Sucks that Quinn will probably be faster even though Reflex is built around being the fastest thing alive.

Good luck with Reflex hope to see him on live someday.

Idk if anybody else caught it or not but if it requires stacks to use his ult why would it also cost mana. just a thought. and the reduction of the cost would transferred into a lower percentage Cool down reduction. just my thought. That's like saying is should cost stacks and health. it's just a little much and if stacks are easy to obtain, then it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but if it takes a lot to obtain the stacks then you might want to reconsider the stacks all together, or you're going to have a champion that is only going to be able to use his ultimate ability only a few times. but i could be misunderstanding your whole concept.

It'd be neat to have a proper speedster as compared to Kennen.

The kit is a bit disappointing though. Let's start from the top.

The passive is fairly inconsequential. The armor/MR reduction is ineffectual, the speed boost isn't going to save you from a hit gone wrong, and allies probably aren't going to follow you into a gank. It doesn't actually help you at killing people, and if it's not helping you at killing people, it's not helping.

The damage on the Q is bad. The extra effect on the Q is straight-up detrimental to actually killing other people - it's like Irelia's Bladesurge, but worse, save for the range, which seems to be there so you can CS in mid without being blown up. You're basically flinging yourself away from your target on a kill - Irelia will dash into the target, kill it, then dash into their face. You could probably use a better ability here.

The W is self-defeating. You put a 0.5 cast time on a speedster. You're supposed to be FAST, not lock yourself down. It's also contradictory - you're dashing in a targeted direction (implying you select a location) but have effects that require a target (implying point-and-click on a person). The base of it is good, but you've got a lot of weird stuff and extraneous details. Just pare it down to the essentials (unstoppable dash that causes explosion on impact) and you should be alright.

The E is really cool, but the rest of the kit doesn't have the burst required to support this.

The ult is borderline useless due to the Velocity stack requirement. I highly recommend you ditch it. Beyond that, it falls into the problem Master Yi, Tryndamere, and Fiora all hit - it's only good if you have any items, and worthless otherwise.

Missing from your kit: any form of CC, powerful burst. You're not going to assassinate anyone like that, and your weird item requirements (AP on W, but you need AD and AS) mean you can't really unlock the full power of your kit.

Infinite Crisis had the Flash as a hero. His kit wasn't exactly the strongest it could be, but it conveyed the fantasy of a speedster pretty well. Go check it out, then go check out other assassins and their numbers, then give it a go again.

OKAY, Let me start by saying the mental images the descriptions gave me made me chuckle, not that they're bad just my mind works in strange circles. So starting off I kinda like the concept of a champion build ALL around speed, unlike Hecarim who's only partly around speed or others, blah blah. Kit wise, he kinda reminds me of Irelia what with the dashing and attackspeed stuff but different enough to me. Scalings make him seem like a hybrid sort of champion with on-hit being the real thing. Only one thing really bothers me is that ult; I'm not sure if I read it wrong but the math seems to be way too high for true damage. For writing the math out (100+(MS*.5))*Bonus attack speed% is what I think it is, lets just plug in some numbers for an example: with no bonus move speed and about 50% bonus attack speed that means about (100+(170))*50% or 1.5 that means he would do 405 bonus true damage on-hit unless you ment it as (100+(170)).50 which would still be 135 bonus true damage on-hit which is still pretty darn powerful. Either way this would mean all he had to do would be build attack speed and melt anybody with say 6 nashors teeth's(?) thats 300% bonus attack speed meaning 1080 or 810 true damage each attack respectfully. Aside from that it seems like a pretty solid champion with a pretty solid kit. Good Luck with Everything!

Made some changes to make Reflex feel more like a speedster champion.

ShadowStrong1/27/2016, 1:38:00 PM1 votes

As the assassin role , the kit doesn't quite fit with the theme. The generic damage dealer ability is fine ( almost every assassin has these ) but other than that immune to CC escape is OP as hell. For an assassin to have a guaranteed escape is really not punishing. Movement speed in 'E' is cool with the CD reduction but other than that you already have 'W' which makes this useless. Could be something more useful. 'R' is also a dangerous thing for assassins to have, making him super OP. Instead making it a dash out an escape ability with damage followed would be more appropriate. Speedster is supposed to be speedy not stunny

Review:

  1. Your champion name might be not very inspiring. I see a lot of people trying to make original names, something other people would make effort to remember.
  2. Good story. I am not native english speaker, so i had some problems reading it, but it was still good.
  3. Base movement speed may be too low for speedster champion. That's just my opinion.
  4. Good passive, but it a little different take on Hecarim's passive. People may dislike it.
  5. Q look very strong. 4 sec dashes with 400 range. It would be good against enemies who tries to poke you.
  6. W looks like nice gap closer, but maybe it does too low damage. Your champion looks like he should focus on attack/movement speed, so he will have low AD and low AD scaling on W makes him do low damage.
  7. E is bad, in my opinion. It gives too massive movement speed boost, because 0.5 from attack speed, when you have 250% bonus attack, gives 125% bonus movement speed. In total movement speed would get increased form 440, to something like 1000. And active doubles that.
  8. While R look good, i am concerned with 4 sec being untargetable and ignoring unit collision. That is pretty long time to run away or run past front line and kill enemy back liners.

Could you review my champion: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/skin-champion-concepts/khcOJ1m3-unfallen-the-risen-prince-champion-concept ?

CosmicKiwii1/29/2016, 5:41:52 AM1 votes

I love this concept. His passive is simple, but powerful, a trait rare in many fan concepts. His Q is too OP though, maybe make it be for just his next auto attack? Also, his name doesn't really fit in with the naming style for everyone else in League. Mainly because no one else in League of Legends has a real word as part for their name. Other than that, I don't have any problems with him.

75% percent of missing health is alot. Anything below half and your basically dead.

Lore - I really enjoyed the Lore for Flex, as you can connect with his personality and love for Khaldir, and get a good understanding of what he would do in different situations. Before the awakening, he was a kind child with a good heart, but was never one to back down from a challenge, but afterwards, he became extremely arrogant with his only capacity for love being buried with Khaldir. You feel sorry for him, as Khaldir, being the one who brought him up, could also be seen as the one who unleashed Flex's evil, and this is something he will never be able to let go. Overall, I really enjoyed reading through the Lore, but I would have liked to see a better backstory for Flex's character, with how he was brought up by the Mercenaries, and smaller, underlying stories that further connect him and Khaldir.

Passive - It's not a very original passive, as it is almost a carbon copy from Hecarim's passive, but changed from attack damage to attack speed. You've got the right idea with having the passive based around movement speed, but try to give it more purpose. I am one for useful passives other than just boring damage increase, as I feel a good passive cements a character; Think of it as another layer of character to the champion that is always there, and changed the play style.

Q - I can see the ability being one of the most frustrating abilities in the game to deal with. At higher levels of attack speed, you can instantly get through a minion wave with one auto attack, and constantly stick to the enemy champion. However, I do like it. It allows for some great outplay potential, and can only be used to its full potential in picks, and is generally weaker in teamfights. My main problem is that they could just build tank Reflex, and use this to stick stick to the backline for. even if you were getting pealed off, the amount of attack speed would make this ability almost impossible to get away from. I would just give Flex a weak early and mid game, and a stronger late game, but give him better scaling with his passive, to make him dependent on items to be good, as that would fix a lot of his problems.

W - I am really fond of this ability, as it carries on the theme of sticking to an enemy, but has some interesting counterplay. If Flex goes to deep in a fight and tries to use this to get out, someone could flash in front of him, and stop him dead in his tracks. The main issue i have with this is that it is a dash in general. If you take all speedsters currently in the game, being Rammus, Hecarim, and Udyr, only Hecarim has a dash, and that is his ultimate. The reason the dont have dashes is because the sticking power would be extremely strong. They have speed boosts that take a second or two to get to full speed, and can be peeled off, (except from echoes Udyr which is the most annoying thing in the game right now, and you just can't kill him :/).

E - I like that this ability can only be used on one person, but with the rest of his kit, this ability becomes extremely powerful. It does give him a burst of movement speed which is the bread and butter ability for all speedsters, but the cooldown reduction is what make it that much more powerful. With Flex's sticking power already, all he needs to do, pop Q and/or W, and the cooldown reduction instantly applies, turning both these abilities from a 7 second cooldown, to like a 5.5 second cooldown. Cooldown reduction is also extremely easy to get a hold of in season 6, and I can see lots of people raging extremely hard when playing against Flex, but the people playing him would have a blast.

R - This is once again another potential dash on an enemy champion, that makes Flex even more annoying to play against. With a 0.5 second knockup that can't be cleansed, and a 1 second stun that can, Flex would become the more powerful version of Vi. I never thought those words would leave my mouth XD. With my advice, I don't giving you all the changes I would make, as I don't want to take the champion over, so I will say this. If it was me this ability wouldn't be an ultimate with the rest of the kit. If i were to change the kit slightly, I would keep the ultimate, but right now, using all Flex's kit makes him a devastating force to deal with, no matter how fed he is.

I would also like some more quotes for moving and attacking, as this solidifies the personality, but what you've got right now is spot on.

I would say that all Flex's abilities are cohesive and are thematic to the design and lore for Flex. You have captured the element the all speedsters need, but maybe went a bit overboard on the power. Keep up the good work :)
