League Of Legends: Grand Scale Item Rework

As many of us know, items are a core and essential part of League Of Legends. They make this game stand out as the game we know and love today; however, they are very limited when it comes to creativity. Riot made items and item builds that amplifies champions' stats, but they didn't allow us to pick and choose the EXACT build we may want.

Let's start with a simple example:

item 3085 This item contains the following build path, respectively:

item 1042, item 1042 + item 1051 = item 3086, item 1042

You may be thinking, "What's the problem with this item?" The answer is, "There isn't a problem with this item." Now you're probably like, "Psssh, get downvoted." Before you do downvote this, answer these questions: "What if I what to trade the attack speed for some damage?", "What if I wanted to add more armor penetration to this?", and "What if I wanted to add more crit to this item so I can get an even 100% crit?" Chances are, you probably answered something along the lines of "you can't" to these three questions proving my point. But, these questions bring up a good point: "What if I can alter the build path of this item?" Let's see how this would look.

If we start off with the first question, we could make various build paths that could result in,

item 1036, item 1042 + item 1051 = item 3086, item 1036,

item 1042, item 1042 + item 1051 = item 3086, item 1036, or even

item 1042, item 1036 + item 1051 = ???, item 1042, or

item 1036, item 1036 + item 1051 = ???, item 1042.

See all the possibilities a single item could have. Not to mention, that only answered my first question. If item crafting we like this, we could an unimaginable amount of item combinations specific to the champion we pick. Let's combine three random items that don't make a build:

item 3133 + item 1057 + item 3144 = ???

Even though this doesn't create an item in the game, they could, potential go together to make an item specific to people who need their stats. Let's build another item that could be considered it's "Adjacent item."

item 3133 + item 1031 + item 3144 = ???

These two items give you some magic resistance, attack damage, lifesteal, and armor. And champions like Tryndamere, Nasus, Darius, etc. could benefit from it or many other combinations of items.

Another example would be something like this:

item 1036 + item 1006 + item 1004 = ???

These items could come together to make a very weird but very interesting item that even a smaller pool of champions may benefit from. And this is only the surface. There are millions of different combinations that we could make with the existing items if Riot allows it; however, there are a few boundaries that should be set before combining items. Here are some of the restrictions that I can think of:

  1. Stage 2 items can't be composed of 3 of the same Stage 1 items Example: (RESTRICTED): item 1036 + item 1036 + item 1036 = ??? (<--- 3 Stage 1 items)

  2. Stage 2 items can't be composed of more than 3 Stage 1 items Example: (RESTRICTED): item 1042 + item 1042 + item 1036 + item 1036 = ??? (<--- 4 Stage 1 items)

  3. Stage 3 item can't be composed of more than 10 Stage 2 and 1 items Example: (RESTRICTED): item 1036 + item 1036 = item 3134, item 1042 + item 1051 = item 3086, item 1042 + item 1042 = item 1043, item 1038, item 1037 (<--- 8 Stage 2 and 3 Stage 1 items)

  4. Stage 3 items cannot be combined Example (RESTRICTED): item 3078 + item 3083 (<--- 2 Stage 3 items)

  5. 2 of the same Stage 2 cannot be combined Example (RESTRICTED): item 1042 + item 1042 = item 1043, item 1042 + item 1042 = item 1043 == ??? (<--- 4 Stage 1 items and 2 Stage 2 items)

  6. Percentage passive only increase the highest percentage by that percent [Will Be Explained] Example (RESTRICTED): item 1042 + item 1051 = item 3086, item 1018 [Since the highest Crit percent is 20, every other crit item will increase the crit by it's percent instead of adding the crit. So in this example, this item has two 20% crit passive, which means, 20% is the highest crit value. So instead of adding both of the crit items, getting 40% crit, you would take the percentage of the crit percent (i.e. take 20% of 20). This gives you 24% crit, which will be rounded to 25% crit because I said so. (<--- 3 Stage 1 items and 1 Stage 2 item)

I think this would be unique to see in League Of Legends. It would diversify the already diverse game. The problem is, since this is such a new idea, it would need a lot of testing before actually being put into the game. Along with that, Riot would have to make millions of items to even make something like this possible, so it won't be out in the upcoming patch if it is being worked on. I don't think there is a severe problem with items to the point of a grand scale rework but having this sort of viability to unique builds could immensely buff up the gaming experience. I want to know your thoughts on this idea and any critiques/feedback that you have. Thank you for your time!

Not going to respond to your two threads that were over a month old (although I will say that ARAM Urf sounds hilarious, and that story-based game modes, while theoretically fun, would probably get boring with only 4 abilities per champion, and would require more development time and effort than they'd be worth for the company). I will, however, take a look at your other two! Starting here.

Items are supposed to be able to have numerous design levers to tweak. Combination cost, components, ease of building, strength of components, passives, actives -- all of these are tools that Riot can tweak to adjust item balance. Even the availability of stats on items is a balancing lever -- ADCs can't build viably tank if they have to sacrifice significant AD or AS or Crit to do so.

This system basically removes the ability to use many of those levers, removes the ability to do some interesting actives and passives (how do you decide what combination they go on?), removes the ability to figure out what your opponent is building by looking at their current itemization, and generally lets every character buy the perfect stats for themselves in the game in question, with no concerns about reasonable tradeoffs. Need armor, AD, and Crit? Great -- buy just that. Don't make any hard choices about whether or not it's worth sacrificing an offensive item for Randuins or whether or not GA is sufficient.
