long post about my first removed comment and my experiences tl;dr at bottom.

I received the following: "We have removed your content due to a violation of the following board rule: Don't be a jerk

Swearing excessively does not add anything constructive to the conversation and only makes you sound immature. As the rules imply, acting this way on these boards is not cool. You should consider avoiding using such language in the future.

This message is intended as a warning. If you continue to violate board rules, you may be temporarily or permanently suspended from the boards. Please review the universal board rules here before posting in the future." plus my deleted comment. twice.

so i looked at the rules for the don't be a jerk rule. copy pasta'd below.

"Don’t be a jerk

We’re aiming for the most sportsmanlike gaming community in the world, in-game and out. Just because you’re anonymous doesn’t give you a license to be an asshat. Posts that walk over the line will be deleted. Repeat offenders may be permanently kicked out.

Moderators will take action against the following:

Players posting content that would seen as extremely offensive to others Players attacking an individual or group in a way that could be considered severe Players making baseless complaints or contesting private matters that isn't relevant to an active discussion"

things i learned today. (some from having my first deleted post. that i know of)

  1. swearing excessively is included in this even though it isn't stated.
  2. specifically the f word as a modifier "i am so fing pissed" but no censor.
  3. it was 3 times in 3 sentences so yeah that excessive.
  4. its so offensive that what i said had to be removed.
  5. don't post while mad. you might be seen as offensive and have your post removed. i even mentioned id post later when i calmed down.
  6. if using the word fuck gets a post taken down. why isn't there a censor?
  7. seriously no censor for boards?
  8. moderation has no name other than moderation.
  9. don't mindlessly vent frustration with swear words
  10. i deserved that post deleted.
  11. add swearing to the "don't be a jerk rule"
  12. part of me thinks a rioter got easily offended. part knows i would get in trouble around children (ages 0-10?) for using the f-bomb 3 times.
  13. this post is partially a test to see if using the f word once will have it removed. because i think it will. it will probably be cited as excessive again.
  14. hotcakes sell really well
  15. riot's lore department can simultaneously make me feel better, 1000X more confused, and lose all faith within the span of 4 posts.
  16. i am slightly disappointed that my post was removed for being "immature" and using "excessive swearing"
  17. i learned that i can learn alot in 1 day from riot. including how NOT to communicate. take some interpersonal communications classes guys. i thought it was mandatory.
  18. your notifications showed me my post twice. good job. slow clap
  19. slow clapping is fun
  20. anyone can get punished if they break the spirit but not the letter of the law.

please clarify to me how exactly what i did was "extremely offensive" OR add swearing to the list of rules. i know that its part of the spirit of the rules if not the letter ( which is why i will avoid swearing as much as possible to protect the fragile ones). I had less that 5 sentences. ive used fing or fword more in this post but those are censored even though everyone knows what they are. i've always heard the moderation is terrible but this... this is crazy. if i had used a bunch of asterisks or symbols my post would have probably been left alone. shoutout to anyone at riot. mods (who will never ever post). players with similar stories. people who know i deserved my deleted post.

OH as i get to this point in the writing i think it might be the third part i overlooked. in which case me complaining about how pissed i was about lore changes + swearing got my post deleted. SCORE! opinion heard!

so people! my feedback on the moderation! let me know if you've had similar experiences! / boards should have a censor to prevent accidents like this!

TL;DR: rargh! me sad about post being removed. complain. complain. complain.

So despite the fact that your view on the action taken doesn't seem to be shared by others, I wanted to include the post in question to make the validity of the moderation action perfectly clear to all.

You posted:

I'm so unbelievably fucking pissed off at this im amazed.

they literally have no idea how much they fucked up how i saw the character who literally got me into this game and spending tons of money.

gj riot. good fucking job.

This added no clear value to the discussion. It was a short rant, in which you were being a jerk.

Personally I am an advocate for a no language to at most bare minimum language tolerant environment. I do not curse myself and I tend to not enjoy frequenting places that have excessive or frequent (how I see your case) cursing. I keep ALL chat off and the chat filter on for this reason.

However I am a bit on the no language wing of things, so I am biased. Given that the average sentence is 8 words long and you cursed 3 times in 3 sentences, that means around 12.5% of the words you typed in the post were curse words. Which is honestly quite high and I would say over the threshold of cursing as a "modifier".

You do however bring a valid point as to why there are not filters for language on the boards if you'll get a comment removed for it. I would suggest such a feature be implemented globally or at least be a toggable setting.

It does seem that if something is in violation of the forum rules, it should probably be mentioned in said rules. If Riot is going to take the (absolutely ridiculous) stance that certain words are unacceptable regardless of context, that should be made clear to everybody using the boards.

If they're clever and make decisions based on the context of the words used and the actual message conveyed, than it's somewhat deceptive to point out that someone is swearing excessively in a warning message.

Either way, somewhat questionable decision on the moderator's part.
