I think IronStylus just inadvertently found a flaw in reddit style posts

Nearly 2500 comments as of now, but nothing more recent than the day it was posted on are in the top of the best view selection. I've got no problems with the ideas that peculated to the top. I'm happy for those people.

However 2500 comments is a lot to go through. I'm not going to lie, that's too much for me to look through and fairly judge. The fact that some ideas can get visible is a benefit to the system. However, it also shows an issue that if you don't post something that is popular early in a threads life your chances of getting noticed are a bit low.

Poor baconavia is just going to be forgotten in the mix. This isn't because baconavia is a bad idea (I picked a red suggestion on purpose), but it's because baconavia wasn't posted quickly enough. Had that idea been posted on day two, it probably would have gotten fewer upvotes... You know, if a red didn't post it.

Has there been any discussion about how to alleviate this issue? I know there are a tons of great ideas I missed because I don't have time to look through them all. You are pretty much stuck with best and recent right now.

Edit: there is also no easy way to search within a thread. I saw two requests for sepiroth Yasuo within a few posts of each other.

Honestly, it's easier for me to digest because people involved in the thread have already helped sort content for me. That's the biggest benefit to the system. Yes, some content won't make it to the top, that's part of the whole voting system. It's ok that some ideas or suggestions don't get up there. There's only so much that can be processed and seen. Realistically not *everything * is going to get up there. I view the cost of a few comments slipping through the cracks as a decent exchange for all the quality stuff that's risen to the top. Believe me, even just the top 10% of that thread is enough to keep me or anyone else busy for a while.

Also, chronological view helps a lot. I toggle back and forth quite a bit.

Additionally, that thread had a bit of help from Moobeat and Reddit redirecting traffic to it. I'd say that it's not the best example of a case study that exposes a glaring flaw in the system. I was asking for a waterfall of suggestions. That's what I got. In a more discussion based thread, it wouldn't get nearly that amount of unidirectional input.

I agree with you that a post reaching that number of comments is very hard to sift through, and there's been a bit of discussion on it before. Largely the idea of creating a system to someone to view all the comments easily is difficult because it's the number of comments one is fighting rather than anything else.

Of course that doesn't mean additions can't help out. Some good ideas I've seen is

  • adding Reverse chronological ordering, most recent/least recent options
  • Adding a specific person tracker, on other words select one person and see all their comments in a single post chain (can be activated after X amount of comments)
  • Add a "Collapse all" option. Collapsing all comments in a post to free up space.

Perhaps I waste my time too often, but I've found it a habit of reading through all posts in pretty much any thread I click on and responding to things I take interest in. Yes sometimes an upvote/downvote is enough, but sometimes I'd prefer to clarify and type things out. I know I have always been able to read rather quickly to myself with little to no effort so it's probably a tad easier for me but I think if the subject matter is something you take interest in, it probably makes it a bit easier to put in the effort to search and type. I dunno how many other people actually do this outside of Rioters and the creator of the tread but it can indeed be a bit time consuming but feels all the more worthwhile when it gets found.

EDIT: Plus, being able to chat with some of the people whose ideas/comments aren't the top upvotes can be rather rewarding in itself because some of them get very, very interesting and can be a lot of fun.

The "redesign Diana" thread is a beacon of crushed hope cackling in my post history ;^;
