The Single Downvote Problem

This forum has come a long ways. But it is still very vulnerable to trolls. The most obvious to me is that a single downvote on a brand new thread can knock it out of the list of "Hot" threads before anyone else has a chance to read it. Hot is default and by far the most commonly used method for sorting. I have experimented with this several times with my own threads and threads I felt were legitimately worthy of a downvote and come up with the same results. This is extremely easy to abuse. There is a good chance that a single downvote will kill a new thread.

I am not sure how this would be fixed. It would be nice if threads had to be opened again before they could be up/down voted, but that doesn't actually address this issue. Perhaps new threads could be given a short timed grace period before they get delisted from Hot (unless they hit a certain threshold of downvotes). I can't tell if there is one now, but if there is then it is very short. Just an idea.

I don't know if they've figured out what they want to do about it, but the devs know and agree that this is a problem, and want to fix it.

This has been really annoying for me. I tend to write pretty long posts, so when it gets nearly deleted by a single downvote, I can't help but feel extremely frustrated.

At times it's gotten to the point that I've posted things in GD instead of the Boards, just because I know a random troll can't remove my thread from GD.

There are definitely downsides to using a popularity contest to figure out what content is most interesting. Not sure why it's the default view, to be honest.

But upvotes outnumber downvotes 3-1 guys!

lol.

I agree, this completely discourages you to post here. I just made a post that took my quite a long time to write, and someone down-voted it almost instantly without giving any reasons why. Now I think I will never get any answers, it's just not fair. :/

What if scores 1, 0, and -1 all had the same weight?

That way, it would take at least 3 downvotes to bury a thread-single downvotes would have no effect.

these forums suck. Reddit sucks. Keep the current forums.
