There was an earlier post on this subject, but it's fallen out of view. I upvoted it, but it's still buried, so I thought I'd make a new thread.

Here are some ideas for improving the Red Tracker:

  • Provide a "mute this thread" option, or some other way for users to hide/collapse a particular thread's Red activity.
  • When a Red has posted more than five times to a thread, subsequent entries could be collapsed into a single "bumpable" entry.
  • Rioters could have an option to tag their post as "casual", so that it wouldn't appear in the Red Tracker by default. That way, Rioters can participate in (e.g.) OK threads, or just randomly share their Nami build and discuss it over the course of dozens of replies. It could also be used to more clearly indicate "this is just my personal opinion; I don't work on this area."
  • You could even have a second tag, for when a Rioter is commenting seriously on a topic within their purview. Maybe this would gain a gold border or something. This would allow users to identify especially important posts.

This would encourage Reds to post, because they wouldn't have to worry about spamming the Red Tracker.

Hey CT, fixing the Red Tracker formatting is 100% on our list. There are some technical challenges surrounding the tool with the way it is built currently that we will have to account for. Overall though, looking forward to making it a better experience for all.

option to tag their post

I agree on the surface, but it's also important to consider the implications of such a change. Here are some negatives:

  • A not-insignificant portion of the community likely enjoys reading every single thing ever said by a Rioter
  • Could make certain posts/certain Rioters look more important than others depending on the topic
  • It's possible to mis-tag a comment, in a situation where Riot views something differently than the community
  • It's a way out in difficult situations; a Rioter could speak seriously about a topic without having to worry about thousands of people reading via the Red Tracker
  • It could actually backfire, making Rioters more reluctant to post because they don't want to get the tagging wrong or mislead players

I'm really just playing devil's advocate here; I think that overall this would be a net positive change. There are definitely some downsides, but many of them can be resolved:

  • A not-insignificant portion of the community likely enjoys reading every single thing ever said by a Rioter

Retain tagging and leave the current Red Tracker as default, then allow users to toggle between Default/Nested as well as filtering by importance.

  • Could make certain posts/certain Rioters look more important than others depending on the topic

I'm not sure if this really has a resolution. I'm not even really sure if this is a problem overall. Hot topics will always tend to have more serious replies, and the things important to the forum community change day to day. There would likely be a good bit of rotation, and logically speaking we as a community already recognize what's important and what's not. Tagging would only reinforce that belief and help us connect with Riot and with each other.

  • It's possible to mis-tag a comment, in a situation where Riot views something differently than the community

This could be a huge problem, but it all comes down to Red Training. My personal opinion is that this shouldn't be an issue at all with proper training and community involvement, but it is still possible.

  • It's a way out in difficult situations; a Rioter could speak seriously about a topic without having to worry about thousands of people reading via the Red Tracker

This one is tricky. On the one hand Rioters should be able to resist the temptation, but on the other it's there and waiting. If you were a Rioter addressing players on something in a random thread, would you rather speak directly to them or speak to the entire community through their post? Would you rather have the 50 people watching that thread see your post, or tens of thousands?

  • It could actually backfire, making Rioters more reluctant to post because they don't want to get the tagging wrong or mislead players

This is a bit pedantic, but essentially it's possible that the additional choice could stifle communication. It really depends on how we as a community handle mis-tagging; if we jump down Riot's throat every time there's a mistake, this would be a massive problem.

Anyway, that's how I feel about it. Sorry for the long post.

Also a problem with the Red tracker: Every reply to the main post shows the main post as what the original reply is 'quoting'. It's usually not a problem, but for incredibly long posts like the 'Is this bird Azir?' one, having to see the entire post everytime a different red replies is annoying.
