Don't just down vote.

Avoid down voting posts out of spite or just because your opinion opposes what is being said. The point of a post is to have a discussion on the topic(s) mentioned in the post. When you down vote a post the post is made less visible to the community, making the post harder to see and less likely to be discussed about. Even if the topic at hand may be what you think to be terribly incorrect, you should first try to ask the author what was mean't or the idea he/she was trying to express, before you down vote. Give the author a chance to explain themselves before just hitting that down vote button.

This also applies for the authors as well. As an author of a thread, be mindful that people can express their views of your thread however they want. So as an author do not instinctively down vote comments who criticize or disagree with your opinion, and instead try and learn from it.

The only time you should down vote a thread or comment is when the subject is expressed in an immature, offensive, or irrational manner. Now, as I noted before even if the author expressed his idea in one of these ways still be sure to comment on why you down voted and how or what the author can improve on.

Thanks

You broke rule 53 of the internet. Never tell it what to do or it will do the opposite. Perhaps name it "Don't just upvote" to get around this paradox and still address your idea. LOL i made myself laugh :D

You are using out dated information.

We'd like to encourage you to vote on every discussion you comment on or read. There's no science to it. Use your heart! It might be because you agree, or disagree. Maybe it made you laugh, or gave you a good dose of the feels. It doesn't really matter why you vote, only that you do.

To my knowledge, that's the most up to date stance Riot has on voting. So please excuse me while I down vote you for being wrong, disagreeing with you, and just plain wanting to because of reverse phycology.

Could you elaborate on which topic are not supposed to be viewed?

To comply with your request, here is my reason are my reasons to downvote this post:

  1. Your title is bad. Search engines use titles to index data. And I use title to decide between read/not to read. The topic title should be more informative.
  2. Your post is hard to read. The sentences are not enough coherent. Many could be divided in smaller chunks and whole post could have 2 paragraphs.
  3. While you post against something, your post lacks explanation what is the correct way and the correct reason for downvoting.

As you can see, I should downvote you 3 times.

the solution is to down vote everyone else's threads so that your own threads get more attention and have a better chance of being on the "hot" or "best" page

I've actually come to a different conclusion, because I stepped back and looked at this from a designer's perspective. I asked myself, "What's the purpose of voting on this platform?" Or, stepping back even further, "How should this platform serve content to users?"

My answer was, we want to show users content that's relevant to them. When you see content you're interested in (for example, when I see this thread), you naturally want to comment on and discuss it. Different people are drawn to different content. Maybe some people want to see controversial posts, while others are more interested in what the (circle-jerk) community consensus is.

Right now, "hot" is some combination of threads with lots of discussion and threads with lots of upvotes. That is, threads that resonate strongly with people in a positive way. This is probably the type of thread that Riot is most interested in -- because they want to find out what the community feels strongly about and what they think about those issues -- but might not be what everybody is interested in.

The point here is that different users want to see different things. I think this means that we need more sorting mechanics. Okay, we can add some of those (unpopular, controversial, most discussion, etc) in. Then the question becomes, "Do we have enough data from votes to make these sorting options work?"

Right now, I think votes give us plenty of data to sort based on how much people agree with a topic. And from that (and # of comments), we can make a lot of sorting options work. We can make a "controversial" sorting option. Ditto for "Unpopular" and "Highly Discussed." For many people, this is all they want, and for them we don't need another sorting option.

I think you're unhappy right now because the kind of sorting option that YOU want is one that shows thoughtful posts, regardless of how many people have discussed them or how popular they are, and that can't exist unless there's a way to show that a post is thoughtful that's different than the way you show you agree with a post.

So, if I'm gonna tl;dr this, I think that it's fine to vote based on whether you like content or not, but that we also need a vote to show whether content is thoughtful, to enable sorting options that are good for everybody.

Remember that critical thinking is a lost art.

I recommend clearer formatting and spacing. Solid blocks of text with no separation have a way of deterring potential readers.

Agree, although I think this is simply a flaw in the system
