League less lonely: launching Clubs

TLDR: Clubs are player-created, player-organized, and player-controlled social groups. The idea is to help you grow the amount of available friends at any given time so you can head to the Rift with the right teammates, every game.

Back in November, we announced clubs as part of the 2016 season update. A new way to organize persistent chat groups, you create and join clubs with unique in and out of game tags to show off your shared tastes wherever you are in the client.

When you create or join a club, you’ll enter a persistent chat room that sticks around even when you’re not logged in. Surround yourself with likeminded League players and get into game with friends you want on your team.

You can find clubs in the social panel, where the “chat rooms” button used to be (if you’re not sure where that was, hopefully we have a handy graphic to show you below).

If you want to create a club, you can invite up to 49 friends to join at launch (we’re likely going to increase the cap, but we’re being conservative to start because persistent chat can get pretty clunky with too many users). You’ll have tools to moderate the club and manage the roster (appointing officers and such if you like).

What's in a club? Well, that's entirely up to you. From esports fans to collegiate gamers, clubs can form around just about anything. And as a bonus, you can rep your club on the battlefield with tags attached to your summoner name. Just as a note: because you can be a part of multiple clubs at the same time, there'll be a way to swap which tag you sport in-game. Last thing to mention here, club names and tags are unique, so you can only create one club of any given name or tag, and there’ll be a few reserved names and tags (for example, using the tag [RIOT] or [#$%^] isn’t going to fly).

There’s still a lot more to come from clubs, as this initial launch is just the foundation for updated and improved social features in League. Some of the visuals are still a little less polished than we’d prefer, but we think it’s important for you to get your hands on clubs now and we can clean things up over the next few patches. We’re also definitely looking to hear from you on how you’re using clubs, and what you’d like to see in the future. So we’ll see you on the battlefield, tags on.

Can we have the club tag come before our IGN instead of after? It looks kinda weird...

Not trying to be rude, but this feature is pretty pointless if you can't join public clubs. Isn't finding like-minded players the whole objective? This is just putting your friends into groups, which doesn't really do anything.

Love this tbh. Only thing I have to complain about? Well it's not even a complaint really, just a suggestion. Make it so we can see club chat in game. Make the text orange or something and make it accessible through /c (like how /r is for whisper). Would add a lot to the club idea. Also make it so you can toggle it off and on if you don't want to be interrupted.

Either way. I love the start of this, just think it needs to expand more is all :).

First I want to thank Riot for making something like this, I think it could be a good improvement and take over for chat rooms and such as a better social avenue. However, I wanted to say that when it came to the club tag, I would like the option for it to be in front of my name, such as in eSports, like TSM Name or REN Name, with the clubs we can only have it at the end, such as Name TSM or Name REN. I think it would be a nice option to choose where we can the tag, be it at the front or end of our names.

This is incredibly important to note, Riot.

I've dealt with similar systems as this in MMORPG's and the like. There is a huge problem with giving Officers(or at least the second tier role up from basic member) the right to "kick." In an MMORPG, it's not that big of a deal... because so much work and effort is put into those "guilds," and so many benefits come with them; that people generally wont troll if they're given rights in a guild.

However, I foresee YUGE problems with trolling in League clubs, as the whole perception is just so casual. As a club owner, I'd be waaaay to weary of giving people the right to kick.

I propose:

Owner> Obviously all the ownery stuff that comes with it. General> THIS person should be allowed to KICK and RECRUIT. Officer> This person should be allowed to RECRUIT NEW MEMBERS ONLY NOT kick. Member> Just a member.

Having only three roles makes promoting extremely delicate, and therefore less incentive in the longrun for members. As a new club owner, I'd like to promote all the early members to Officer, but not if they can easily just clear the whole club by kicking everyone. It'd be nice just to have some help recruiting though.

You say it's possible to switch between tags, but is it possible to sport no tag?

Another thing, is it also possible to hide tags worn by other players?

I see you can join up to 3 clubs currently, but have you considered allowing clubs to affiliate with each other in some way? As in, create some sort of structure for easy in-client communication and competition between clubs?

In general I guess I'm wondering if you have any interest in encouraging player-selected communities creating tournaments and such further than having the ability to create custom games.

Can you guys stop trying to force Groups everything on us, Group Ranked Q, Groups here, Groups there, fix your Tribunal first, fix Solo Q, fix gameplay(towers), fix broken champs. Fix TOXICITY of those GROUPS.

We get it, you want more money so you are trying to get us to self advertise playing more/spending more by making everything group oriented.
