We're changing RP's name

Hey folks,

We've made a few big announcements in the last few days, including the reveal of some new Riot games. With that in mind, we wanted to let you know that we won't be using Riot Points across all our present and future games. Our newly announced mobile titles, Legends of Runeterra, TFT, and League of Legends: Wild Rift, will be on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, which do not allow different games to share game currencies. This restriction and other logistical complications of having multi-platform game currencies pushed us towards having a different one for each game.

For those curious about the mobile version of TFT, while you'll use a different game currency on mobile, you can expect a shared inventory between the two platforms.

With that being said, game currency on League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics on PC and Mac will be known as simply "RP". Any RP cards that you own or previously purchased will still work and the price structures are not changing at this time.

So my RP, is just RP, which is just nothing.. hmm

I'll still call it Riot Points XD

TLDR:

Riot can't share rp through pc and mobile because of rules.

They are also not calling RP, "riot points" because people might complain and lawsuit(?) if their "riot points" don't work on all their riot games, because you could reasonably assume that.

This is a public announcement of the change so they can cover their bases.

What's the point of doing this?

Sora Omo10/17/2019, 6:36:48 PM18 votes

So if RP doesn't stand for "Riot Points" anymore then what does it stand for?

Queue the meme lord suggestions

Really? Not standing for anything? And here I though we will have Red Essence with our Blue Essence and Orange Essence. All you woould need to do is change 'P' to 'E'.

You read the post, it makes sense; you acknowledge how many RP cards there are already produced or in production, it makes sense. Is it still just a tiny bit silly RP no longer stands for anything and is literally just is "RP"? Yes, but it makes sense.

Tft Is a pointless and unpopular game mode. Invest your time elsewhere, thanks.

GreenKnight10/17/2019, 6:18:06 PM6 votes

Sorry, but what the fuck is the point of it?

Agent Corgi10/17/2019, 6:10:51 PM6 votes

So for example, I won't be able to use the RP I purchased or the 27k Blue Essence that I have accumulated on League PC to buy champions/skins when League: Wild Rift becomes available?

Inkling Commando10/17/2019, 7:17:06 PM5 votes

on one hand i want to play Wild Rift when it comes out. but on the other i don't want to fall back into this hell hole known as League.

Why not just affix a real world price to every item instead of having currencies at all?

AntiSkillshot10/18/2019, 10:52:52 AM3 votes

A little bit of a confusing title, but once read it makes sense.

The TL:DR is that the mobile games will have their own currencies, separate from one another, while the PC versions will stay the same. There'll be no "shared pool" of currency between them, because google and apple doesn't allow that. Idk about things like TFT having shared information/data of accounts, but I doubt that (I was corrected on that in a reply).

Anyway, now with the TL:DR out of the way... The title is slightly misleading, as it implies that the name "RP" (or Riot Points) is no longer going to be a thing and is going either to go away or just be outright changed to some other name.

Now I can finally say "RP points" without my friends correcting me.

I suspect that another, more surreptitious reason for this change is that Riot's mobile game purchases will be more expensive to compensate for Apple's and Google's 30% cuts. The hilarious part is that iOS only has a 15% market share compared to Android's 85%, and it's easy to manually download and run an Android app without getting it from the store, so Riot could just be Android-exclusive and market their games directly from their website, with no third-party fees, approval processes, or other restrictions to worry about. Riot is a huge company and doesn't need to piggyback on someone else's marketplace to get users.
