Reports: How do they work?

Riot·11/9/2015, 8:08:21 PM·6 votes·156,315 views

Since launching the instant feedback system in the spring, we’ve spent all summer and fall powering it up. We updated reports in 5.21, so let’s talk about the why's and how's of reports, and how they fit into the broader ecosystem.

So What Changed?

We made two major changes to the report system. First, we cleaned house, analyzing report data and community feedback to dispatch redundant, useless, or simply out-of-date report categories.

Second, the old system only allowed reports for one offense, but we’ve all been in games with players who show multiple unsportsmanlike behaviors in one game. The system now allows up to three categories to be selected when reporting an especially disruptive player.

Selecting multiple categories won’t increase the severity of a report because the system verifies the accuracy of every category of every report. Later on, we’ll discuss how we handle dishonest reports, but generally speaking, the more earnest and accurate the report, the better chance of appropriate action being taken.

Why Reports Matter

We occasionally hear some players wondering whether reports matter in a world with automated systems like instant feedback. Short answer: Reports matter a lot. For the longer answer, let’s zoom out to the big picture.

We view aggregate report data as the collective voice of the playerbase and the main way the community defines and establishes standards of behavior. When reporting a player, you add your voice to that chorus. For example, report data shows the vast majority of players can’t stand racism, sexism and homophobia, and that’s why we tune systems to specifically target hate speech.

Importantly, each region owns their own community standards and we customize the system for every region to account for cultural differences. For example, in most regions, calling another player “bronze” is heavily reported, but we’ve learned that in Korea, even calling players “silver” is offensive. Youch. “Your mom” jokes vary by territory, too. In English speaking territories, “Your mom” can be silly or mean, but in Korea, “Your mom” is always deeply offensive. So keep that in mind on your next swing through Seoul.

Reports are significant on a per-game basis because no one is punished on game data alone. So if there are no reports in a given game, the system assumes no one had a bad time, and there’s no reason to consider punishing a player. This means that if you play with a negative player and don’t report them, they won’t receive a punishment and likely won’t reform.

How Reports Help

When a player’s reported, the instant feedback system collects all reports from the game and compares them with in-game data (statistics, chat, item builds, metrics from past games, etc.) to make a call on a whether or not to punish. If a player ends up punished, they receive a reform card (an in-client message calling out the punishment and evidence of the behavior that caused it). Even if no one is punished, the system stores the report and game info to better inform future decisions when players are reported again.

Reports go beyond supporting instant feedback; player support specialists, designers, data scientists, researchers, and engineers use them to:

  • Hand review difficult or nuanced cases (a situation where hand-written comments really help out)
  • Analyze trends in report types and comments over time to inform the design of future social systems
  • Build and power our automated systems like instant feedback

Sometimes a player attempts to punish another player by reporting them as a form of retaliation. In a system that relies on honesty, that’s potentially a big problem. We can detect false reports, filter them out, and decrease the effectiveness of future reports from consistently dishonest players. As we continue to build more systems that rely on honest reports, the penalties for false reporting will become more strict.

Some cases require human intuition and judgment, and for those, we’re rebuilding the Tribunal voting system. In the future, the Tribunal will lean heavily on reports (and honors) to build cases for both positive and negative behavior. Accurate report selection and comments will be critical to letting Tribunal voters know what really happened. We’re looking forward to rebooting the Tribunal after we’re through pushing new champ select to all regions and queues.

Comments? Questions? We’ll stick around for a bit to talk player behavior.

Incoming story book. Sorry for the length.

_“There are no facts, only interpretations.” -FN _ Hi Lyte, fellas, ladies. I see the value in getting perspectives from common players however allow me to give you a perspective from a once extreme toxic player, a permabanned player, myself.

I find there is no real gratification from reporting people, as 90% of the time you aren't the last person to get them banned and you still feel pretty helpless. There are at least 1000 players out there who feel like I abused them, got away with it and laughed in their faces(which I did) until only 1 person had the satisfaction of seeing me get banned, and got that notice(which he can't even be sure it was a permaban because your policies).

I was extremely toxic for a long long time at bad teammates before anything that stopped me from playing happened. You say Riot has a zero tolerance for hate speeches, racism, and homophobia. However I can assure you there is a tolerance, as zero tolerance would imply immediate ban if use of those words, which is not the case.

On bad days in the past I've been known to tell teammates some really bad things, however allow me to let you know how I came to that point since I didn't start playing league at lv1 extremely toxic. The game TURNED me toxic to more toxic, to where I am now - permabanned. There is too much leniency for players like me out there. I can be extremely toxic, suffocating and harmful to one person, just to say nothing the next game and get away with everything I did the first game -_ There is no real consequences to my actions_ .

It would be like someone putting up a no trespassing sign, just to have someone trespass and give them a warning, then the next time they trespass, you give them a warning again. Chances are the third trespass will happen again, and this time they might ruin property(aka make another person toxic), then you put up a 14 day gate making absolute sure they can't trespass only the take the gate down. The trespassing will continue to happen unless you take a stand on it and punish that player the first time around to show. This is not acceptable, and it won't happen again. Bad days are not an excuse to verbally abuse someone online. You should have to deal with consequences bad days or not.

I started off just a casual league player, but as my competitive nature took over, I began competitively into League, wanting every win, craving every win. Once I ran into a few toxic players are first, as my learning curve was coming around I would report and move on. Years later and toxic player after toxic player without knowing or ever seeing them punished I began to slowly mold into one myself. When people went bad builds/did huge game costing mistakes, I began abusing them like I was once abused when starting League. Must to my enjoyment, their threats to get me banned was often falling on deaf ears as I had never been banned before and I know for a fact i've reported more toxic players than me who are still playing. Suddenly one day after a few thousand more toxic and neutral games I got punished.

It's really not hard to trick the system, I've done I've seen it done. You pick your poison, which unlucky individuals am I going to completely blow up on and next game i'll be as quiet a mouse so I won't get banned. Through 100 games though there's likely to be 10-15 games you blow up on people that's 135 players who didn't get a notice but feel violated by you and feel even worse that you're still in the community.

TL;DR: **Toxicity is a cancer cell, it grows in your body and completely molds you into a toxic player yourself if exposed to it enough. To stop toxicity you must stop it at the root of the issue, no more warnings, just consequences. **

Ps: I know i'll get downvoted to shit because of my being real with you guys and I admitted i'm toxic, but I tell you guys I'm no longer toxic, and it wasn't because of no punishment or scared of punishment. It's because I care about rank and I love this game, and I found out eventually there truly is no escaping toxicness with the system they currently have implemented.

Thank you so much if you read it all

I just wanted to say that I had in one of my games this one guy who spammed the N and F word, threatened us, and insulted us in more ways that we can count to the point that the rest of the 9 players agreed to report him and I got the pop up saying that someone got punished by the tribunal, I was happy that it worked at least.

I like it how we can report cheaters now and have multiple categories to report, but sometimes it is hard to distinguish between negative attitude and verbal abuse.

HOWEVER, that guy was one of the people who actually deserved something done about it, especially the part about threatening to hurt us, other people with small remarks here and there are not the ones I rather see gone, I can understand being frustrated, but that guy I mentioned went overkill on the rage. I haven't been punished yet but I won't be lying that sometimes I am worried about getting in trouble.

PS: Give us easier to get Ribbons please, unless I play bots I am probably never going to get one because it is on consistency not on how many you get :(

So I just got perma-banned on this account. And honestly, I'm fine with that because I am often very toxic if I have a bad teammate. The thing that bothers me is how long it took for me to even GET perma-banned. I've been an extremely toxic player on this account for over a year and a half, and it just got banned a couple days ago. I like that there are improvements being made to the reporting system, but I think most people would agree with me when I say that it just takes too long to punish toxic behaviour. Thoughts?

Have you considered matching people by their honor/report ratios?

There needs to be a more tangible benefit for being nice and friendly. If you did this, I would know that by being nice, I will play with nice people more often.

On top of that, I would know that my reporting bad players and honoring good players has an actual, useful effect. Currently, unless I was notified of an action it feels like my report did absolutely nothing. Just went into a black hole.

You keep saying reports accumulate, but I've never been notified about "Hey, 2 months ago you said this guy was toxic, well, we've gathered enough reports and took action. Thank you." I don't think this exists; either you get notified straight away, or never at all. So I don't feel like any reports are accumulating.

Please can you seriously consider honor/report ratios in addition to MMR when matchmaking. This kills two birds with one stone: nice players get to play with nice players, and every report/honor feels like it has an effect.

Although I do love this game, I am dissapointed that several employees are working on a way to lower toxicity in game day after day. It really shouldn't be that big of an issue. It is just a game after all and the amount of "kill yourself" comments i've seen in game is astounding.

Something that I've noticed more often than not, is that when there is 1 extreme toxic player in the game. They're usually other toxic players in that game feeding his rage. In my opinion this is just a promotion of cyberbullying. Where as 1 person is having a bad day and is angry, 3 other players start telling him to "stfu" and "he's bad". The singled out player gets abused to the point of full out rage, since it's the internet he's releasing his frustration. He gets reported and banned yet the other 4 perpetrators are left smiling and laughing left to initiate another toxic player. This is hardly conducive to reforming players, and I think when 1 player is reportable for verbal, I'd really like to see if it truly was a 1 way street or was he being abused to begin with.

Also, would love to have a report feature in champion select!

Personally, I care more about people intentionally feeding, rage quitting, and trolling. Toxic and offensive language? Well, everyone can just use their strong power known as the mute button. BUT, bm like saying "GG EZ"? this should not be punished. The only reason by people report for "gg ez" is because they are mad because they lost the game. please Don't be so sensitive about bm. Its just a game god damnit.

But why don't players get instantly punished if they get reported while having said things like "you stupid fuck go kill yourself" etc., why doesn't the automated system act instantly, even with one single measly report on that? Why does it always need to be 32489327498 reports (and countless of other toxic games) for it to do anything if the chat clearly shows how toxic they are?

Ricorum11/11/2015, 12:06:22 AM7 votes

I would still love an option to report Bot players (as in, using scripts or macros, not just bottom lane players). But with the new three categories, I can report bots for being AFK, intentionally feeding AND assisting the enemy team!

Wulfston11/11/2015, 8:53:46 AM5 votes

The reporting system is still incomplete. We NEED the option to report people even if we only got as far as champion select.

We have players, good natured, friendly players, losing LP to avoid toxic players and troll picks. They're taking time penalties, and even series losses to save themselves and three other players from suffering through a terrible waste of at least twenty minutes.

I understand that refunding those lost LP isn't on the cards (else, why not dodge a bad matchup, report someone innocent and face no penalty?), but we need a tool to deal with people who are out to troll. Even if it's only to bluff people into losing LP to avoid them.

Other than that?

It's been said by others. You need to scale LP loss based on game factors. AFK/DC'd players deserve to lose the biggest chunks, not their victimized team-mates. Feeders deserve to suffer more than their hapless allies.
