Ability Update: Shyvana

Riot·11/18/2016, 10:23:02 PM·12 votes·74,317 views

If big changes for Shyvana seem out of left field, you’re not crazy. Compared to the champion updates you’re used to, we didn’t pick Shyvana to solve major issues that need huge time investments. Instead, she’s one of League’s first opportunistic updates: updates where a smaller amount of work can yield big improvements. While not entirely without issues (she’s had a tough year), Shyvana’s already a pretty cool champion - we wanted to make her better. As pre-season work wound down, we decided to take on that challenge.

Half-Dragon, Half-Diver

Shyvana was created long before today’s champion class/sub-class framework. Within that framework, Shyvana’s closest to the Juggernauts: a durable and devastating group of champions who lack reliable ways to get to their targets. Of that group, Shyvana’s selling point is that Dragon’s Descent... gives her a reliable way to get to her target. Through this lens, her unique strength is that she periodically gets to ignore one of her weaknesses.

This is why Shyvana has such a hard time clawing her way back from a disadvantage. Ignoring weaknesses doesn’t help when you’re too behind to flex your strengths! It also gives number changes a short shelf life, since even slight meta shifts push her aggressively ahead or behind the rest of the pack.

That said, Shyvana isn’t fundamentally flawed. Even while ahead, her weaknesses are still pretty clear: once she ults into the enemy backline, she lacks both crowd control to shut down enemy kiting and sustain to outlast it. We felt a few carefully targeted changes would go a long way - hence this project!

Kill It With Fireballs

We’ll start with Shyvana’s shiniest new toy: an exploding fireball. E - Flame Breath used to become a cone of damage in Dragon Form, which let Shyvana hit more things, provided enemies clumped up nicely for her. Most aren’t that accommodating, so we wanted to give Shyvana something she has more control over.

Instead of a cone, Dragon Form now gives Shyvana control over how far Flame Breath travels, exploding for bonus damage. The explosion leaves “scorched earth” that constantly marks enemies for Flame Breath’s on-hit proc. Basically, cast E at a distance for spicy fireball snipes, or cast it in melee range and claw face on whoever’s stuck in the blast zone.

  • E - Flame Breath (click for tooltip)

Shyvana unleashes a fireball that stops after hitting a champion. All enemies hit take 60/100/140/180/220 (+0.3 ability power) magic damage and are marked for 5 seconds.

Shyvana’s basic attacks against marked targets deal 2.5% of their maximum health as magic damage on hit.

Dragon Form: Flame Breath explodes on impact or at target location, dealing 100~200 (at levels 1-18) (+0.3 ability power) bonus magic damage and scorching the earth for 4 seconds. Enemies on scorched earth take 60-120 (from levels 1-18) (+0.2 ability power) magic damage per second.

Flame Breath’s on-hit damage against monsters is capped at 100 damage per hit.

Just Dragon Things

Looking toward R - Dragon’s Descent, we felt we could deliver a much more epic transformation. That means a bigger dragon and uninterruptible flight (think Malphite or Hecarim). We also swapped Dragon Form’s resistances for bonus health - while both are survivability stats, Juggernauts find more interesting ways of using health (Titanic Hydra, Sterak’s Gage, etc.) It also fills up a chunk of Shyvana’s HP bar, which is nice.

Of course, we had to trade a few things to get there. Beyond the loss of resistances, Dragon’s Descent does less damage and travels less distance. Overall, we don’t expect these changes will shake up how Dragon’s Descent is used, but we’re pretty sure it’s cooler now.

  • R - Dragon’s Descent (click for tooltip)

Active: Shyvana transforms into a dragon, gaining 150/250/350 Health and flying to target location. Enemies along her path take 150/250/350 (+0.7 ability power) magic damage and are knocked toward her target location.

Passive: Shyvana generates 1 Fury every second. Basic Attacks generate 2 Fury.

Keeping Focus

Time will tell if we’re right, but the E and R changes look to be a big buff to Shyvana. While we want this update to be a net-power-up, internal testing showed us she didn’t need that much love (a kiss on the leg should be sufficient). Rather than hit the active elements of Shyvana’s success, we targeted mechanics we think she’ll still function without.

First, W - Burnout no longer leaves a flame trail in Dragon Form. Shyvana wants enemies in front of her so she can attack them, but Burnout asked her to stay in front of them instead. Felt weird. So, Burnout now gets bigger as Dragon Form does, letting Shyvana focus on what’s in front of her.

Next up is Shyvana’s Passive - Dragonborn. As work progressed, we noticed Shyvana was becoming unkillable in playtests. Dragonborn - a big ball of resistances - was an obvious lever to pull to reduce that tankiness. It got fairly sad to read as we whittled its numbers down, and we wondered if we could make it more interesting, rather than just weaker.

To be clear, in most cases, Dragonborn will be weaker than before. Shyvana gets much fewer resistances by default, and those resistances no longer scale with level. However, she can recoup some of the loss if she and her team secure dragons. This gives Shyvana - a champion frequently left to her own devices on top-lane island or the jungle farmhouse - a unique way to participate and celebrate in her team’s success.

  • Passive - Fury of the Dragonborn (click for tooltip)

Shyvana deals 10% more damage to dragons.

Shyvana gains 5 Armor and Magic Resistance. Elemental drakes defeated by Shyvana or her allies grant her an additional 5 Armor and Magic Resistance.

With everything going on, it’s hard to nail down exactly where Shyvana will land. All said, we’re hoping she comes out stronger than before. If we miss the balance mark (in either direction) this update’s put us in a much better position to follow up.

Dive well, Shyvana.

So does her passive apply to Aurelion Sol?

Zelorxon11/18/2016, 11:51:43 PM47 votes

I fail to see where the "better" is.

Basically we traded are forced to trade 800~ effective hp for a 10% bonus damage to dragons (3 cloud dragons spawn inc.) and more hp which are absolutely not needed (1% of 350 is 3.5, and the fact alone that riot tried to sell it as a "buff" for the "juggernaut" items is proof of how much stupid they think we are, and sadly there is a whole Q ladder to back that up) and nobody asked for. I can already see when i'll have room to go and take a turret or two but HOLD THE FUCK UP GUYS I SAW A DRAGON, sorry guys, i'll go take that dragon so i can restore the stats i originally had so i don't get oneshotted if i actually try to fight 1v1 or in teamfights meanwhile you roll joints around, get caught and apply 0 map pressure and you're not putting me on your backs because riot decided to poof some of my stats.

350 hp might seem a lot no they don't even look as "a lot" because if they're not backed up by resistances they vanish in a couple of autos, and having a cheesy heal i can occasionally use is completely worthless against opponents that know what they're doing, we are speaking about shyvana, not renekton.

So you're screwing up more damage oriented builds for more tanky builds (which are eventually nerfed by these changes) for reason hard to understand beyond "we noticed kids were popped so we decided for our better interest to make these changes" We are talking of a difference of 800 hp vs 350 hp, sure it might work better with CoC but this ruins greatly the 1v1 potential, and shyvana being a splitpusher mostly NEEDS it. Also the mastery you already said clearly it's too strong and it's going to be nerfed, what's that? are you going to buff shyvana further after the mastery nerfs? (read, if we feel funny enough we are going to deliver another stealth nerf, because she hadn't had enough so far since devourer made enemy bronze junglers ragequit and throw their keyboards on the ground). Not counting that going the defensive tree (which was a choice before, now it's mandatory, but hey, we talk a lot of "choice and stuff" just to throw some noise in the ears of the listener), shyvana is going to miss a lot of the damage she got from the thunderlords tree, and considering the HP from ult are situational, is nothing even close to what SOTA gave.

With the trail removal you can't pop most of the "out of combat" effcts, or create those paths that made it dangerous for someone at risk such as a low hp target or a support to walk across, the E is maybe funnier to shoot if you can detonate it mid air or launch it olaf style, but it has an extremely less AOE, so it means i won't be able to mark more targets at once and switch between them during a fight if i get kited unless the circle is at least big as much as the old E aoe, while the W size increase is unnoticeable unless it's massively increased, but in that case it would feel both weird and overpowered, not something i need. Also the human form is straight up nerfed for no fucking reason, now i can hit multiple targets only if i'm ulting, so it means i can't hold it for gap closing or escaping and everybody can just stand in front of my target and laugh at me as my E goes wasted, and this is a pretty big fucking nerf.

I explicitly asked you to leave shyvana alone once and for all, you say you're gonna look on her, i expect buffs, i receive nerfs. Masked as buffs. And then there are some sycophants that even praised those changes or people asking me and wondering why i'm so pissed at riot all the times. Good job riot, keep up the good work.

What about Drakeless maps? (HA, TT, CS)

Not liking this nerf "Dragon’s Descent does less damage and travels less distance. Overall, we don’t expect these changes will shake up how Dragon’s Descent is used, but we’re pretty sure it’s cooler now."

Shyvana one trick here, I like the changes overall. At least Riot is willing to admit she was neglected for a long time. Thanks for the changes!

It's unfortunate when a champion possesses a passive which only functions within Summoner's Rift. Playing a game of ARAM really shouldn't give a massively-flawed image of a champion's capabilities; herein lies Ivern and Shyvana.

Drehirth11/18/2016, 10:30:10 PM18 votes

sounds mostly cool, but a little sad how you basically gave her a weaker ball of stats passive and gave up on an interesting passive.

Clowns Suck11/19/2016, 2:33:24 AM14 votes

So basically nerfs all over the place. Cripple her extra resistances.. shorter ult range. Passive that is entirely reliant on having a decent team to actually make it not garbage. Thanks riot. Big fan.

iKickzZ411/18/2016, 11:15:50 PM13 votes

Riot needs to leave champs the f alone. There was nothing wrong with shyv

RoflLizard11/18/2016, 11:51:29 PM12 votes

I knew It, I knew when you wanted to rework her It had to do with her passive.

Shyavana a champ with no self heals or proper snare/stuns. And you want to remove her armor and make her work harder for It.

So,with that knowledge,When you gonna nerf volibear and Warwick's heals?Hmm? Or Yi's get out of jail free card? Hay,you where all up on It for kindred and you seem to be on a role targeting champs who are not 100% broken with have reasonable skill sets,so why have you not targeted the really broken ones?

Eze E 311/19/2016, 5:07:43 AM11 votes

Nice nerfs Riot. Shyvana is officially dead in the water with these garbage changes.

clickhead11/19/2016, 12:12:07 AM11 votes

So, finally the Dragonborn can absorb dragon souls!

I think it should give 10 armor and mr per dragon though, 5 armor and mr is not a very good incentive to leave top lane. It really barely makes a difference.

Veritas Synergy11/18/2016, 10:52:26 PM10 votes

Dragon Slayer Pantheon removes -5 armor and MR if he kills Shyvana.

Varqaaa11/19/2016, 1:01:22 AM10 votes

terrible passive change. tying to dragon is feast or famine design. ESPECIALLY for a top laner. e update might be cool. dislike w changes, bigger is boring. flaming earth felt much more thematically tight and the mini singed effect was fun. people want to run away from you, no?

Cremepie11/18/2016, 10:53:10 PM10 votes

I like the E and Uninterruptible Ult, but ultimately I feel she will be weaker now and not worth picking up with the passive change and ult range reduction. I guess we will see anyway.

Frackdozer11/19/2016, 7:08:59 AM9 votes

" Ignoring weaknesses doesn’t help when you’re too behind to flex your strengths!"

Rito: Here's a passive that does nothing for you if your team can't capture dragons.

[slayer-jinx-unamused]

You could at least make it where the damage to dragons gets stronger for each one you miss....resetting when you kill one.

Loryster11/19/2016, 3:50:39 AM7 votes

So we take away passive armor/Mr and make it something that relies on teammates, to even come close to it... I see Shyvanna being even more unplayable than she currently is.

Noizei11/19/2016, 4:55:16 AM6 votes

They say, IN THE FIRST 2 SENTENCES of the first paragraph, "Shyvana’s closest to the Juggernauts: a durable and devastating group of champions who lack reliable ways to get to their target." Yet they call this "mini-buff" a fix to her gameplay. Seriously? Shyv is similar to Evelyn in the whole "feast or famine" aspect. Unless she can get ahead, or a the very least keep up, in terms of gold; she's completely useless. She has NO CC, NO sustain and just her passive to actually aid her in laning and/or general survival.

You call making her weaker, nerfing the only real gap-closer she had and making her W bigger as she lvls an improvement? In all honesty, her E and W changes are pretty okay (save for the removal of scorched earth, the only thing that actually made her useful in a teamfight.) Her ult's damage is fine being nerf given that isn't the utility people looked at when using her. She's a dragon. People loved the ability to take flight and land on someone's face, even if you had no hopes of killing them because you only have 2 hp items.

This isn't love. This is cruelty. Shyvana item 3070 item 3070

As a player who has fond memories of digging out of low elo with this fantastic Draconian Lady of might, some of these these "changes" come as bit of a mishap for myself. Shyvana's greatest assets is minion/ wave clear and DPS, somewhat making up for her lack to negate CC or prevent being kited. In my opinion, she depends on sustainability and getting ahead in terms of gold in order to gain an advantage in a game. For Riot to remove those resistances that counteracted her weaknesses for something more trivial like the dragon killing buffs, it makes sense in a lore sort of way but it does not make up for the strengths that the champion Shyvana stood for. However, I suppose we will have to wait until the changes go live to see what happens. I really hope that Riot will up the percentage value and AD/AP ratios on some of her abilities in order to solidify her strengths as a DPS/tank hybrid.

But in the end, Dragons are still cool and I hope that Shyvana can come out on top of these changes.
