Is this program legal?

Currently I am writing a program that reads the notes files in League of Legends game folder to let the person in game say "/note ez flash" and to start a timer for ez flash. Is this allowed? Its like having to use your phone to keep track of timers. It doesn't inject into the game in any way.

Think of it like https://timer.gg/ except instead of talking to initiate the timer you type in chat "/note ez f"

I'm 99% sure you'll get banned for it. It falls under using third party programs to gain an in-game advantage.

This might be a question better suited to the Developer forms: https://developer.riotgames.com

First impressions:

  1. This program has the potential to be inaccurate (distortion upgrade and some masteries can change Flash cooldowns). That inaccurate nature makes it feel less like an "I win because I have this program" situation.
  2. Riot has always been OK with the idea of people manually recording notes on key events and using those notes to plan ahead.
  3. The only difference between this program and one you alt-tab out to click on is how you interact with it. It could be argued that using the note command takes you out of the game less, making it more OK than a timer in a web browser.
  4. Riot intends the Notes.txt file to be read by the end user. Riot isn't trying to hide that content from you.

If you cling to fragments of statements about third party programs you get a very distorted view of what is and is not allowed. I believe considering Riot's policies on third party programs as a whole leads to the conclusion this program would be acceptable.

Any program that automated in game features(even chat) is considered bannable.

No software should interfere directly with the in-game player experience between when you press “Play” and the end of game screen.

It’s been said before, but we absolutely don’t like applications that provide measurable player advantage. If there were ever any modification that were to become so standard as to be required for competitive play, the integrity of our environment just wouldn’t be viable. You shouldn’t ever have to go digging for add-ons just to stay competitive. Some examples of measurable player advantage include: •Exposing information that’s intentionally obfuscated (cooldowns or timers) •Taking actions on your behalf (botting or scripting) •Drawing conclusions for you (predicting enemy positions) •Otherwise altering your field of intelligence (zoomhacks or global ult alerts)

This program would send out the msg regardless of you actually seeing it. It also automates a in game feature.

Even if it only reads the files Riot probably notices it and bans for it.

No. You will get banned. If you don't believe us, don't say we didn't warn you.

Using an external timer like your phone or a webpage is one thing but riot has shown that if they don't explicitly give you the information (EG Jungle timers) that using a program that interacts with the game (even if its just the notes feature) to have it in game is something they don't approve of.

That said, how do you plan to have the timer work anyway? Would it read the notes and then play a sound or something? Or actually display a message in game? I'm curious more for curiosity's sake than anything since I do fine managing flash timers on my own, anyway.

Try what others have said: basically send in a ticket and wait; don't do anything or you'll probably get banned

UNSC3/21/2016, 12:04:12 AM1 votes

It's not allowed due to it giving you a in-game advantage over other players by using a 3rd party program that you imported into the game files. Doing it on your phone is fine since you didn't modify league of legends directly.

As long as it does not violate the terms of use it's fair game. If you make it so a key combination triggers an external program to do this riot can't really do anything unless it touching the league files.
