"Competitive BS-ing is fine. But not hate speech"

Found on the loadscreen by Riot themselves (Rito, I think you misspelt "BM"). But "GG EZ" is bannable punishable. Not that I care either way, but isn't that a little hypocritical?

Edit: Ok, punishable, no bannable. My point still stands, why say it is allowed when it is punished in actual practice?

"GG EZ" isn't bannable on its own - it's treated as light toxicity, and can ultimately lead to a punishment, but it isn't, in and of itself, bannable.

It doesn't really matter which way you cut it - whether it's BM'ing (bad mouthing) or BS'ing (bullshitting), the action and intent is still the same - a light jab or taunt in the spirit of competition.

The issue is that people don't often recognize that there is a line between BM/BS'ing and shit-talk/trash-talk, that there's a difference between a modest, biting remark and pure vitriolic bullshit. If you consistently belittle your opponent(s), (and this is why I said "GG EZ" can lead to a punishment), you're going to be considered an asshole for harassing your enemies when they're already having a rough time.

It isn't hypocritical for Riot to reassure players that their competitive jabs are fine while they punish people who take it overboard.

Examples of competitive BS/BM that wouldn't get you in trouble: "Gotcha", "feelsbadman", "rekt", etc. Being excited and expressing that excitement in the form of some light taunting is no big deal.

"GG EZ" is poor sportsmanship, full stop. It is traditional in competition, for as long as organized competition has existed, to shake your opponent's hand and say "good game". You can see it from passive competition like Chess, all the way up to combat sports like boxing (with the obvious exception of when two fighters play up a rivalry by disrespecting each other and talking shit, etc.). Saying "GG EZ" is incredibly disrespectful, because it's essentially telling your opponent that they aren't at all worthy of competing with you. It's not playful. It's about as disrespectful as a taunt can get, without the use of profanity or similar, in my humble opinion.

But even with all that, it only triggers a ban in Riot's system as the icing on a toxic cake. I've never seen somebody punished for only saying "GG EZ", and I'm fairly sure that would be impossible.

Short version: Competitive trash talk happens during the game. If you keep talking down to your enemies once the game is (effectively) over you're just being a condecending douche.
