Why use "Autistic" as an insult?

Synian·12/3/2015, 4:41:20 AM·29 votes·7,028 views

I been seeing this more and more lately and being I actually have Autism myself it hurts me too the core. It got really bad on me during a previous game but I can't show anyone because my post would be removed but I had a thought. It's in the poll and honestly I hope something is changed here because considering how much I love League if this doesn't stop I might not play for a while because this is downright disgusting.

A permaban? No, I don't believe that saying "You're an autist" or the sort should lead to that kind of punishment, unless it gets out of hand.

Honestly, I tend to be one of the guys who uses those kinds of sayings quite frequently without being toxic, if that makes any sense. Like, I'll casually say something like that to a friend when he gives up first blood or doesn't rush IE on Syndra (I usually go for "retard" or "fegt"). I wouldn't want to be banned because of it, because I'm saying so in jest to a friend and there's no harmful intention in it. So who is being hurt by that? Honestly, words shouldn't warrant ban if they're not used to specifically target someone, I believe. To get banned for "Hate Speech", it should not be because I said a specific word towards someone, but because I expressed the belief that someone is lesser or worse of a person because of a specific trait.

I think an example would be...

If you fed in a game and one of your teammates simply says something like: "You're an autist" Leaves, that wouldn't really be something I consider permabanworthy, but rather something you would report them under the "Unsportsmanlike Conduct/Verbal Abuse" maybe. Because they're just using the word and not really hating on you for the fact that you are autistic (and how would anyone actually know if you're autistic/gay/female/male/white/black/asian/etc?).

However, if someone heard or thought you were autistic and immediately started going after you for that, then sure, by all means, report them for "Hate Speech" and someone like that deserves a lengthy ban, if not a permanent one.

Yet, using a word as a general insult could never really be considered deserving of a complete and utter permaban just for using a word. I think it's how you use words that should dictate a punishment that severe. Then again, I'm pretty impossible to offend, so I might just be completely desensitized from that kind of stuff. I'm thrown quite a bit of those "adopted" jokes and they're true -- but that's it. I don't see it as a bad thing, but I can definitely see and agree why people would consider it bad. Meh.

I thought I understood what this was about when I hit yes, looked at comments, then looked at the actual question again...

No.

I mean, our society needs to get to a point where we understand Autism is different, not lesser, and stop using it as an Insult (Retard is a word I'd keep selectively because there are people who are stupid out there, but there's a line between literally unable to function independently because you'll end up hurting yourself and just being an idiot/moron. We all have those latter days...

But calling someone autistic, while it should definitely earn a punishment, should not create a permanent effect because then people have no chance to learn what's actually wrong or no way to show improvement.

Retard: to delay or hold back in terms of progress, development, or accomplishment.

This word is seen as a offensive word... Yet has a perfectly legitimate meaning, when someone does something that holds back, or delays progress, that act CAN be described as a retarded act. The fact is people think that it is only a word to make fun of handicapped people, however that is not the consensus most of the time. It is a medical term, a definable word in the dictionary, and has a real meaning. We cannot change what we are, they are just words. And in thia day and age, hurt feelings can cause ptsd.... That is a true definition of a retarded statement. Claiming that YOU have ptsd because your feelings were hurt does not make you on the same level as someone who ACTUALLY had visual/physical trauma. Doing this makes real sufferers looked down upon. Same with actual people suffering from mental retardation. It's worse to claim a word is derogative, instead make it so when it is said you call them out on it for using it in the wrong context, and teach them what the true meaning is.

And have a good one :)

This, homophobia, and racism should be especially focused on

Hun, your forgetting the majority of the player base is men with the mindset of a 7 year old and Riot caters to this.

What about people who make really liberal use of the word "gay"? Wouldn't that be derogatory towards homosexual people (I think that's the politically correct term, I'm not 100% sure on that).

As far as your poll goes, I think hate speech is bad (duh). The problem is when I get angry I say a lot of things that I really don't mean. If someone regularly makes fun of women/autistic/gay/transgender/mentally disabled people etc. they should absolutely be punished. Punished by how much, well that's up to Riot to decide. Being autistic is a horrible disability and should not be made fun of. But you shouldn't also make fun of: people of different races/ gays and transgenders/ the opposite or same gender and many other categories. I don't think calling someone Autistic should result in an automatic permaban, especially if in that instance the same judicial hammer would come down less harshly on calling someone gay. Does that make sense?

I really like this discussion and this is a serious disability. If you feel like I have disrespected you in any way please let me know, I'm really trying to be sensitive to other people and I would like to make it right.

1st offense shouldn't be permanent ban. Repeated offenses after a multitude of warnings and chat bans should.

A couple thoughts as the father of a child with Autism. Someone mentioned that they use the term to "jab" their friend for giving first blood or a knucklehead move (which I tend to make) like focusing on a champion and missing the turret you run past. The justification was that they are a lesser person or inferior or not as smart. That is the insulting part! They are not lesser just different. Imagine being trapped in your head and wanting to talk to someone but not being able to figure out the order to say the words or how to make your mouth make the right sounds. A lot like a stroke patient. Or try to figure out how to tell someone that the clothes they want you to wear hurt because they are too scratchy because your skin is hypersensitive.

Like most medical conditions there are varying degrees and I think that the political correctness police are going way overboard with this as well as most things. A permaban for calling a friend an autist (which I believe someone else pointed out is not a word) is over the top. Someone going on, and on at someone should be considered. Perhaps looking at their trend, a progressive punishment makes more sense.

Some people are ignorant ( not stupid, just unaware/uneducated) of the terms they are using. My boys best friends are dark skinned and my best friend growing up was Mexican (1st gen American) and my Dad still uses racial terms to describe these people. He doesn't mean it derogatory, it's what he grew up with - my Grandma was very racist unfortunately.

My point is lets be rational, educate and play on based on the Summoners Code we all agreed to before downloading our first tutorial.

I completely disagree with you, making fun of minorities is no better/worse than making fun of anyone else. You need to tackle why people calling you this stuff is hurting you. Offence is always taken, never given.

I'm gay. Words like: f****t, queer, gay, poof, homo, etc just don't offend me at all. They used to hurt me, but I stopped caring. Most of the time, these words aren't actually used in the context of someone being gay, or in your case, having autism, so it's not like I'm actually being targeted. Even if I was being targeted, I still wouldn't care, because it's accurate, lol.

If people saying mean words on the internet (League is the internet, not a safe space) is enough to get you to leave, maybe you aren't mature enough to be on it in the first place.

You are well within your right to report people after game, but that's as far as it goes. Minorities really don't need special treatment to protect feelings, please don't advocate for it.
