Why I'm Finally Leaving. Why I'm Going to Overwatch.
I just played a game today after about a month of not playing and I learned a lot. But not because I haven't been playing League, but rather, because I've been playing Overwatch.
League: I get a little frustrated every time I am losing a game of League of Legends. I don't get mad or angry, but I do get a little upset. Because I'm an average player I win about 50% of the games I play, which means I'm going to be in a position of frustration about 50% of the time when I lose. Because LoL games last from 30-45 minutes, I have to sit on that frustration for a very long time. When the game is over, I can get into another game, and if I start to do poorly again, my frustration compounds.
Overwatch: If you are having trouble in a game and start to get frustrated, you can swap your champion out and get a somewhat fresh start. You don't have to stay in frustration mode for half an hour if you're behind.
Also, if your team is doing poorly, the games tend to end quite fast so you're not in them for a very long period of time. This means that if you normally get frustrated when you lose at a game, you can just hop into another one within literally minutes. I've had league of legends queue times that have lasted longer than Overwatch games.
My point: Overwatch has very clever built in frustration-buffers that make the game more enjoyable as a whole to play. If you're not doing well you can just swap out a champion/hero and go at it again. And because there is no item/level system, it's way easier to get back into the game. Also, if someone on your team leaves the game's queue will find someone looking to enter a game within seconds, so the games are very rarely lost or won because someone lost a connection or RQ.
Overwatch seems to have observed a lot of the short comings of other online multiplayer games and addressed them while simultaneously making a great game. And the learning curve is low to get you into the swing of things. I personally suck at shooters, but because there are a few champions that don't depend on shooting to be important I can still contribute to my team.
And for any of you who played Overwatch; be honest. When you were losing and getting railed by your opponents, weren't you relieved that you could just swap your hero out and get a new one? Wasn't it cool to see that there was no leveling system or item system to displace power levels? The only way you could possibly win was by working as a team, and I think that's awesome.
