To the top laner who taught me, rather than ridiculed me.

I have been playing league for about seven months. I can honestly say that I am terrible at the game; however, League has become a part of my daily routine. I love the team tactics, fast paced action, and different outcomes based on the smallest decisions. League has been one of the most rewarding games I have ever played. Unfortunately it has also been one of the most hurtful experiences. I think we have all been there when it comes to toxic people. Folks picking on you because you did poorly in a match. Or your team ridiculing you because you fed. We all have those matches.

But onto the real point of this post, I played a game awhile back with a top laner who's main role was Marksman (which is what I was playing). Almost immediately I began to feed the enemy team because (as stated before) I'm terrible at the game. My support left me and went mid because I caused him to die a few times as well. The support and jungler began calling me names and ridiculing my skills (the common toxic person crap).

After we had finished the laning phase. I had lost 2 bot lane turrets, and was defending my inhibitor trying to get farm. Our top laner decided to come bottom and help me push. As we played he always alerted me when to back off or push lane. He never took my farm and never left my side. Some would say this was unintelligent as he was far more valuable to the team than I was. He had taken both the first top and middle turrets alone. As we pushed lane and defended, I noticed something, he never said a world. He simply pinged and played. By the end of the match; we had lost, but not by a lot. With the help of the top laner I was able to make a substantial come back having a just under 1/1 kill/death ratio.

In the end, the support and jungler flamed me, asking the other team to report me for feeding. The top laner then sent me a friend request. I was expecting to get a private message about how much I sucked, instead I got a message saying something along the lines of,

"Hollywood, don't worry about if you did bad or not, there is always room for improvement. I main ADC. While playing Quinn make sure to hop in and out of battle and stay on the move, as she is squishy and will melt under the enemy mage or marksman. Pick your targets wisely. Rather than focusing the tanks, target the mage or marksman. You do a lot of damage to them if you have built properly. Finally, don't listen to those people who say you suck. This is a game and everyone who plays has to learn one way or another. Just keep practicing. Also, you might try support instead. Your play style is pretty passive, which works for champions like soraka and sona. Anyways, GLHF."

Now these weren't the top laners exact words but they are fairly close to what he said. And because of him, I now main support and have seen my game play improve dramatically.

So to that top laner that gave me advice, To the top laner who helped me out when I was failing and nobody wanted to help, to the people I have met who are like that top laner and make League a more enjoyable experience for the rest of us...

Thank you

I main top/jung/mid and this is kind of inspiring to do. Probably the most advice I've ever giver boils down to two things:

  1. Telling a player who's having a bad game to not be hard on himself, we all have bad games
  2. Telling enemy Nasus to not be so aggressive with his Q.

I sometimes do the same, but when the person who is not doing well decides do argue back then I just ignore, otherwise I would help most of the time. Also what champion was that person playing?

Unless you're Malphite, and you're losing 0/7 to a Sion top, while Malzahar mid is 8/x. The flame is totally, 100% ok. You need to git gud or git out. How do you even feed with Malphite anyway?? Like damn. Don't even play ranked, dude.

...

I was the Malphite. :c

inb4 the "wow you fotm quinn player you suck" comments Glad to hear about your story like that. I honestly don't care what champion people play. If you want to play it, go for it.

I mean, do they expect everyone to be good with a champ they're new to? And to those who go say practice against bots, that doesn't help since bots have no actual intelligence, don't counterplay, don't counterbuy, and react to you either that much specifically. So… playing in Normals PVP sort of is the best way to learn.

Best of luck to you learning Quinn! ^^

It seems weird, but every time I start a new account, my favorite part is helping new players get better. I'm certainly no pro, but I at least have a grasp of the basics, and passing that knowledge onto others feels nice. People really appreciate a kind word and some constructive advice. And sometimes it's all they need to get better.

I really like these threads with inspiring stories about how players in the community make this game a better experience. Honestly, it makes me want to not flame as much and be a more compassionate person to teammates. Nice post!

Bravo to him!

And if you need any tips with Quinn ADC, hit me up. She's my main ADC and I've been playing her since mid season 4

Those people are the best. I still remember a Yi from when I was new. The enemy was chasing me down lane and I went into the bush where he was recalling. I got him killed :P he was mad, said something like "wtf, I was oom why'd you bring them to me?" told him I was new and didn't really know what I was doing yet. he was completely cool with it after that. I also had no idea what oom meant at the time, so he filled me in on that too.

If you like playing passively and protecting people, you can also try Janna - the queen of disengage.
