Then when people troll, they'll smart ping you until you're deaf or you turned off the smart ping sound.

Because part of the main shtick of LoL is communication between players. It shouldn't be removed because of toxic people; That's a fault with the players and the community, rather than the game's function.

Games like DoTA even managed to add voice chat without too much toxicity.

Communication is a tool, and it's up to the players to use it for good or bad.

Good, you end up with Dota(which even then isn't a 100% nontoxic community).

Bad, you end up with CoD.

Why should it be removed because some people can't exercise self control

Well pings are useless in itself. Earlier i didnt helped a premade (jax jungle) as they requested help (was top) cause i had to except 2v1 top (as eve forgot smite) and didnt want to loose too much farm.

the match was over at that point and the premades surrendered at 20 even with us winning ._.

next match.. either gragas was deaf or blind. if he stays in the bush next to the lane and you placed a "need assistance" ping right infront of him, we choose to walk to the other end of the map

While i personally /mute all at the beginning of every game that matters as everything you will say unless you're masters/challenger falls into one or more of these categories:

  1. I already know it
  2. It is wrong
  3. I'm not interested

It's not the chat function itself that's the problem, it's the people that choose to use it to verbally abuse and harass others instead. It is definitely possible to use the chat in constructive manners that are beneficial to both the game and the environment as well, but it's up to the players themselves on how they want to use it. Again it's not the system, it's the players.
