How to really do an instant feedback system

Seems yet again I have to post a disclaimer in the top of my thread. In no way am I asking them to remove the current punishment system. This is an addition, not a rework.

Someone says "report" in chat, no matter the context, a bright yellow message appears saying "One report is the same as 9 reports in a single game. Telling other people to report someone isn't only a little silly of you, but it makes no difference".

The message would only appear for you, and your message containing the word would not be sent.

Someone says "gg ez" in chat, your message will not appear whatsoever, and a yellow message visibile only to you reminds you that this is not a nice thing to say.

Point is, create a filter of trigger words, and let the game handle it in funny and positive ways. Instant feedback. Not 5 minutes after the game. You can't teach a dog new tricks if you don't have the dog treats ready.

There would be a four step involved process, that by the way is almost the exact same as real life law making happens:

  1. Player A takes offense of a phrase posted by Player B.
  2. Player A reports player B, giving a detailed explanation of why this phrase offended them.
  3. Riot looks at the report and the available evidence of the phrase being used, and also takes offense of this phrase. They then issue an official punishment based on how offending it is, and their prior offenses.
  4. Finally, Riot adds this phrase to the filter, and anyone writing it within their sentences ingame, will now not be able to send their message.

This means that first of all, Player A has taken offense, an average player in the game, so there's definitely not a case of "no one takes offense so why ban me?". Secondly, Riot themselves has deemed the phrase so toxic they create an official punishment based on it. So it's definitely not "no one" that takes offense. Both a first hand and second hand, objective source has taken offense, a punishment has been issued. The word is now beyond a doubt toxic enough to warrant a punishment, and therefore should be filtered out.

Also, if you are corrected by the filter system too many times, say 4 or 5 times in one game, for the rest of the game you aren't able to chat, or your chat is restricted. The final warning would also tell you that the next time you trigger a filtered word, your chat will be restricted, so there would be no confusion involved when it happened.

Sure, people will find ways to be toxic, but at least then they won't be able to use the common brainless curse words that they've used since season 1.

And to those who are worried about "censorship": You're not supposed to be able to say anything you want in League of Legends. You agreed to a TOS, and you are a guest in Riot's house. Imagine yourself in grandma's birthday party, with all your little cousins and uncles and aunts present. How would you act then? Simply respect the household you're in, and you can say anything you want.

Anyway, what we are attacking isn't basic sentences that make up most polite conversations. We are attacking sentences and words that specifically have gotten people banned previously. This is a point I can't stress enough.

An alternative could be a live check of sentences people type, and they're not allowed to press enter if they have a filter word in their sentence. That way, they don't even need to receive a warning at all. I think a lot of people would like this idea instead of getting warnings, but it depends on the capabilities of Riot's servers obviously.

Carry on.

The first one isn’t a bad idea. I’d support a pop up or chat message reminding people of that.

The second one- overwatch has tried that, and it honestly has led to people abusing that to troll/be more toxic. I don’t think that actually helps toxicity, as people would know that when people say silly things out of place they were originally saying something bad.

i like the idea. as others already said by "censoring" trolls they'll find new ways to be toxic. but a dynamic blacklist system that updates itself will remove that feature. eventually. also giving the players a warning is nice. if you dont learn after 3 times, you get muted for the current (and maybe the next) game.

LMFAO this would be great. Especially the pop ups. As for the "funny filters". Yeah I vote for that too. Some people can't help but leave that mute button untouched, and then they usually can't help but start getting feels at what they read.

Lets say filter corrects 4 sentences/words in game, a pop up message appears saying:

"Uh-oh! The filter is getting full!" (or something similar) and the 5th time "Your chat filter is full! You'll have to take a break from chat. Remember positive summoners win more games!". Rest of the game you're chat restricted to like 10 messages of X characters (kind of like ping spamming being denied). If you're reported easy pickings for Riot.

"GG E Z" and "re-port ahri pls". It's the only thing that will change.

Post reserved in case I want to make a list of funny interactions with the filter. [slayer-jinx-catface]

ummm...........no

Then you'll just allow people to be toxic to their heart content. They will eventually resort to game play toxicity.

I like the concept. Rito I would like this to be a thing.

it'd be nice to send a msg to everyone who reported said toxic person that they got punished, instead of one, assuring them that the system works.

Tbh a censor that changes what you say is very gimmicky and quickly becomes ineffective, as people simply get used to the replacement words/phrases and associate them with the original anyway, rendering the censor pointless or even making things worse (because people will begin to think it's ok to behave that way).

Personally, I believe that the most effective way to combat lesser but comment negative behaviors like "ggez" would be reminders/notifications in the client after matches where you get reported for it, before you get punished. If you choose to try and circumvent detection (which doesn't work well) then it's entirely on you when you get punished because Riot made it clear that you're being unsportsmanlike.
