Mute and Chat Filter

Whats the point of having a mute button and a chat filter when you can still get banned for being toxic. Seems counter intuitive to me. If you are that offended by what someone is saying then mute them. If you are going to be offended if someone curses or says some sort of profanity then turn the chat filter on. Just doesn't make any sense when you think about it. This is a competitive game people are going to be brash and insensitive, riot just banning accounts left and right even though there are other things that the PLAYERS could be doing to remove themselves from toxicity.

Because the mute button and chat filter are there to help people who don't want to see profanity or want to have a clean chat without unnecessary arguments clogging it up. They're there for people to curate their experience, but the mute button is a purely reactionary thing. I shouldn't have to mute everyone at the beginning of every game to avoid toxicity. If someone gets offended, that's already put a black mark on that game, so they might report you. The fact that they don't have to see more of someones vitriol is inconsequential.

And "This is a competitive game people are going to be brash and insensitive" doesn't really hold up since organized sports are also competitive but you don't see them cursing their teammates and being jerks.

When some one comes in here and says "We shouldn't have to mute."

You hit them with "Don't get offended and you wouldn't have to mute."

The chat filter is for things that are allowed in chat, but that someone might not want to see. The prime example is swearing: you can swear and not be punished for it, but for those who don't want to read it (like myself) then the chat filter helps both sides get along without stepping on anyone's toes.

The mute button is to for when someone's taking chat too far. As with the chat filter, this doesn't have to be for behavior that's against the rules. Someone could be flooding the chat with Teemo quotes or your mom jokes, and you're just tired of listening to it.

The report/punishment feature is for people who are breaking the rules by taking things too far. You can be competitive without breaking the rules, and the rules are set to a level that's not hard to follow. Relatively few people regularly engage in chat that's so far outside of the normal competitive chat that they get banned.

The point of the mute feature is a reactionary defensive tool against toxicity, not an excuse to allow the toxicity in the first place. It's best used alongside the report feature.

Mute = short term defense, prevents the toxicity from impacting the game further after it's been muted

Report = long term defense, allows Riot to punish toxic players and lower the likelihood that they'll negatively impact further games.

The point of the chat filter is there for people who don't want to deal with profanity, whether due to sensibilities, personal beliefs, etc.

Seems counter intuitive to me.

Your opinion is noted.

If you are that offended by what someone is saying then mute them.

That argument is a double-edged sword. If you're that offended by the punishment you get for being toxic, then don't be toxic.

If you are going to be offended if someone curses or says some sort of profanity then turn the chat filter on.

The audience that the chat filter is designed for probably already use it. Regardless, you don't get punished just for swearing. As long as you don't swear at others or use swears to attack others, you won't be punished for it.

Just doesn't make any sense when you think about it.

No, it makes perfect sense.

People signed up for a videogame - a recreational activity. They want to have fun.

Toxicity makes the game less fun.

So Riot gives them two tools: The mute feature, which allows them to mitigate the impact of toxicity in that match, and the report feature, which allows Riot to punish the toxic player and remind them that the game is meant for fun, and toxicity makes it less fun.

This is a competitive game people are going to be brash and insensitive...

Suuuuuure.

I may not care for sports in general myself, but I know that if you get onto a sports team, act like a complete asshole and start flaming and harassing your teammates, you're not staying on that team for too awful long.

And besides, if toxicity were inherent to competition, then why do we not see that kind of senseless vitriol in the Olympics?

...riot just banning accounts left and right even though there are other things that the PLAYERS could be doing to remove themselves from toxicity.

The only other thing besides muting that players can do to remove themselves from toxicity is leaving games, and that is against the rules. And besides, you'd complain that people are leaving games too often if they were allowed.

It should not be the non-toxic player's burden to stop the toxic player from impacting their game - it should be on the toxic player to not be toxic in the first place.

Riot expects you to behave, and if you don't behave, they'll expect you to accept your punishment.

Don't like being punished? Don't be toxic. It's that simple.

Simply put the mute button is not a get out of jail free card as it's meant to be a band-aid solution at most. Don't like being punished for flaming others? Then don't flame others like an immature brat, it's that simple. From the Tribunal FAQ:

What's the point of having a language filter if I can get banned for 'adult' language? We aren't out to punish players who use adult language; in fact, very few players are ever banned for saying stuff like "f***, I missed that skill shot" or "damn, fing close game!" However, the language filter is not an excuse to verbally abuse someone in the game. When you verbally abuse or harass someone by calling them "fing *****" or "ngger noob", that's when you've crossed the line and will be punished by the Tribunal. I've said this before and I'll say it again, we aren't trying to clean online games of adult language; we're trying to reform or get rid of jerks who like to verbally abuse and harass other players.

Why is verbal abuse punishable if there is a mute button/language filter? Players shouldn’t need to rely on features like the mute button or language filter to engage with other players in positive ways. When a player verbally abuses another player and forces him to use the mute button, they have already created a negative experience for that player.

Do you think people are psychic or something? The mute comes after the toxicity. The damage has already been done. Pretty basic logic. I mean, your opinion would be more valuable if you owned a gaming company and looked over tons of data relating to the topic. Like do you know the cost of players leaving their game due to toxicity? Maybe they were losing thousands of players and its more profitable to ban the toxic players than to just keep losing players due to the toxicity. You gotta look at it more pragmatically. This is a business in a capitalist economy. Stop thinking of it as a societal issue. Its all about the bottom line... profit.

Saying a game is already toxic just because someone said something you dont like shouldnt be the answer just mute and move on there is literally no reason to report if you just mute then you dont have to hear it you dont have to mute you have the option to mute and therefor remove yourself from the situation so you dont have to hear it. Just because someone says something you dont like doesnt mean they should get a ban. Honestly the only bannable offenses should be inting and leaving, because those actually effect quality of game... if you choose not to mute then you are being just as toxic as the person who is being toxic because you are contributing to them. Them talking shouldnt alter your gameplay if you mute because you wouldnt have anything to worry about.

Gotta love downvotes for just stating an opinion here with valid points xD.
