What if toxic players got a permanent -chat- ban instead of a total ban ?

Hey,

So I had this idea after seeing how many people who get banned for toxicity just create another account, which renders the threat of the permanent ban useless and just ruins the new player experience since they have no intention to change.

They do so because they literally can't play on their old account since it was banned. But what if, instead of banning their account, we just definitely removed their ability to type in chat ? I'm sure that many wouldn't go to the trouble of making another account just to be able to type again, especially those who invested real money into the games. They would just suck it up and keep playing on their main account. Some would even be grateful for that, because I have seen many posts of toxic people who say they just can't help it.

I only see two potential downsides to this, but they're no big deal for me, here is why:

1 : this punishment isn't harsh enough. Sure, people like that deserve to lose their account. But ask yourself that : do new players deserve to be put in the same game as super toxic players ? A permanent ban isn't doing anything if people can just create another account. So I'd rather have to live with the idea that toxic players aren't punished that harshly if it meant that there was much less toxicity in the game overall.

2 : the ability to communicate is actually important. To that I agree. But I also ask you : do you really think that toxic players are an actual positive contribution to their team ? They are more interested in flaming others than playing the damn game. If we remove their ability to type, they'll focus more on the game instead and would improve everybody's chances of winning. Besides, pings are a good enough way to communicate for most cases.

So... What do you think ? Good idea ? Bad idea ? I'm eager to hear what you guys have to say about it !

Similar things were already attempted.

Previously, one could constantly build up chat restrictions until they were effectively on chat restriction forever.

Riot saw that these types of players just found other means to show poor behavior when they couldn't use chat, such as trolling. And trolling is far harder to catch and hold someone accountable for because of the ambiguity of it when comparing it to unintentionally making poor decisions.

To people who know that they're behaving poorly but don't care, plugging one outlet of poor behavior only means that they'll just use a different outlet.

We have gotten to the point where nearly every other idea one can think of that is reasonable has been tried and either failed or was incorporated into the current system.

Reforming was attempted, it failed as most players who were given the chance just went back to their old ways.

Players used to peer review other players, failed as players just stopped caring after the most part and stopped bothering with the system.

Perma chat suspension was tried and as stated above failed.

What I’m hoping for one day is a mix between that peer review system we had called the Tribunal and the current one, like after a certain threshold of reports, your major bans are decided through the Tribunal or something.

Based on my experience, I used to be suuuuuper toxic (got an account permed), if I were still toxic, and got permanently chat restricted, I would find other ways to express my distaste. Whether it be running it down mid, stealing farm / buffs, or building AD and AS on a support, I'd find a way. I'm sure others would be the same.

I get what you're saying, and there are definitely some pros to it, but I do think the threat of a permanent ban is enough to deter most people from acting poorly enough to get banned. It takes a LONG time to get to level 30, and when you get permed, you lose that, all your other levels / loot, skins, summoner icons, champion masteries, etc etc etc.

Unfortunately I think it's one of those things that there will never be one correct answer that suits everybody.

I wish. The common counter-argument is "It was tried but some players decided to be toxic in other ways", yet my question is...

What about the people who aren't? Someone who's sole problem being chat should only be punished through chat. Gameplay crimes should receive gameplay punishments. Toxic chat is not a gameplay crime and therefor shouldn't suffer a gameplay punishment.

According to Rito these players would turn into brainless zombies whose sole purpose is to troll and int the game. So that's why they don't do it.

I just dont know why aren't they banned for trolling/inting if they do that O.o
