Community thoughts on emote taunting (and I guess ping spamming and BMing in general)

Hello, folks,

I just wanted to get community input on how they view emote spamming (and by extension, ping spamming and BMing)

I tend to consider it as extremely obnoxious and toxic behavior. BMing is one of the most unsportsmanlike things to do, and I think allowing emote taunting to go unchecked is contradictory to Riot's goal to create one of the best behaved playerbases in the community. I know most people say "Mute the emotes" but wouldn't that also apply to rude text chat as well? What differentiates the two? It seems like Riot's official position on unsportsmanlike or hate speech is to avoid it in the first place, but I'm confused as to why it doesn't apply to in-game behavior as well.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the spirit of the system (I prefer uncensored text chat) but I love that it fosters a more positive experience that cracks down on toxicity and negativity. I just wish Riot had a more comprehensive, consistent approach to bad behavior.

Or am I overthinking things? Do you folks think emote taunting isn't even obnoxious in the first place? No matter how I think about it, someone emoting every time they hit a single skillshot on me feels obnoxious, especially when combined with being told I'm "tilted" after telling said obnoxious person that they're, well, obnoxious.

I think of emotes as simple friendly banter.

Yeah it might be annoying.

But it's all fun and games at the end of the day.

Besides, you can always just mute them.

Reporting people for spamming emotes seems a bit harsh.

the real question is, is emote taunting reportable/punishable?

i've met way too many yasuos spamming their emotes every 2secs and i would gladly report them in fact

Whenever I see an enemy flash an emote after getting a kill I will report them after match, because it is exactly the same thing as typing in chat "I killed you noob".

Only exception is thumb up emote after successful gank. Then it's more of the "good gank, thanks" to an ally, not bm to an opponent.

I just mute emotes. Its unsportsmanlike imo. But at the same time is more annoying than anything else. I'd not report anyone for it.

agree on your point on contradiction.

do i think it should be bannable to use an emote that riot encourages you to purchase with real money? no. would it make more sense and be more consistent with their player behavior policies? yes.

edit: not to mention most of the emotes are specifically taunts and most applicable to BM situations.

Its core on some builds. Especially Tahm Kench. If you don't rush "unbenched" you might as well be feeding.

It is an in game feature that can be muted with one click.

Filing a report for that would be completely against what the report system should be used for.

People here don't seem to mind it, but think players should be permabanned for saying gg ez. Its weird.

I don't use the emotes or flap my mastery dick around, EVER. I always respond with a "fuck you" if the enemy tried really hard to kill me and I manage to kill them back (usually from tower dives). Sometimes I get more eloquent and rain Imperial scorn down upon them, especially after carrying out my Right of Vengeance (if a particular enemy has killed you multiple times in a row, any circumstance in which you claim the kill on them is perfectly justified).

Almost always, their only response is "rported" [sic], because groupthink is the reigning power in the League community. Either that or they try to echo my words and fail miserably, because there's no better way to prove your illiteracy and inferiority than by misremembering and incorrectly parroting what I said.
