Clarification on the Nunu 14 day ban
I'm pretty sure this is the reasoning behind the ban: A look at the player's page shows that he has a 56% win with Nunu with a little over 300 games. That's pretty damn good considering the player is in Diamond 3. I'm sure some of those wins were from Nunu jungle so the Nunu support wins might be a bit lower, but nonetheless he's doing pretty good with a champ that is rarely ever played nowadays. The reports probably come from adcs (and other lanes) who lost games and felt it was due to being alone bot lane too much i.e. they want a meta support pick that acts as a bodyguard providing constant poke, cc, and/or heals.
But we don't get to pick our teammates (flex queue, duo queue aside) and we especially don't get to pick the champs they play. If somebody wants a certain support every single game then they should duo or flex queue, otherwise they are left to the randomness we all share. The people that lost these games probably blamed the Nunu and assumed it was solely his fault seeing that he took smite instead of exhaust or ignite. That is not a problem with the Nunu pick, that is a problem with two humanistic flaws: the negativity bias and the self-serving bias.
The former (negativity bias) states that humans tend to focus on the negative aspects of things. Nunu is an unusual pick and could be perceived as a negative which could create a negative perception of the player and the individual game. The self-serving bias says that people tend to attribute their failures to external causes rather than internal ones. A failed flash, poor farming, and poor decision-making by other players (not the Nunu) that ultimately led to a loss would be externalized on other factors rather than the mistakes one made on their own.
A support Nunu who roams, counter jungs the enemy team, and takes smite is an easy scapegoat. Losing is hard especially when one puts time and effort into a game. It is easy to blame a loss on decisions other people made rather than focusing on what oneself could do better in the future.
I'm sure this will be cleared up and Riot will issue a statement further clarifying their stance. If they don't then they should and I will be surprised by their lack of accountability. The ban came because people probably reported this player after losses and for the aforementioned material above. If something works, it should hardly be punished. Riot should not expect us to communicate every little thing we do before a game, and we all know what will happen if this player does communicate his intentions: 1.) people won't say anything as some people just want to stfu and play 2.) he will get flamed 3.) someone will introduce a non sequitur referencing someone's mom 4.) people might accept it as a legitmate pick 5.) something I haven't mentioned 6.) A combination of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Basically league players are random and their attitudes are random as well. Something you say may be well received or it may not, there is no telling what will happen. Unless the community shows a significant change in their overall temperament we shouldn't be expected to do anything other than lock in our picks and play the game.
