So the community has come to this?

I'm a relatively new/old player... I played way back in S1 and S2... but with work taking precedence in my life I stepped out of the gaming lifestyle. My question I guess is... as a new player.. are all the low level players just "smurfs" of plat or above players that just mess around cause they got banned for some offense?

I think I've only played maybe 10-15 games since coming back to this game after a large break, and these professed "pro's" are toxic like red tide.... In hindsight.. I'm kind of glad I left this gaming community if this is what it really has come to.

With the state of smurfing, and your previous experience with the game, you'll likely be good enough to have the system think you're a smurf. Just know that most smurfs you'll run into are bronze and silver players who want to feel good. Good players have smurf accounts that are the same rank as their main account, after all.

Just wade through the smurfs and judge your skill level against theirs. With a little practice I'm sure you'll leave them behind once you finish leveling.

You're at a high MMR, if you're truly running into smurfs, they should stop appearing after, like lvl 6, unless you win very often, then you'd be matched up with Smurf'd players.

Rule #1 of Smurfs: They (almost) never admit to smurfing. If someone outright says they are a smurf, their not. Or they are a secound account of a silver/bronze player. Most of which, still suck.
